I was just looking at at a world clock thingy and it said that Bradford only has 7 hours and 27 minutes of daylight today..hmm..here in Washington we have 8 hours and 31 minutes..ya'll must be at a higher latitude than we are...yep, just looked at a map..you're WAY up there.

    Keeper of the hens

The chickens are too busy being miserable to appreciate the goodies they have just been given...they hate rain and are hiding at the back of the coop instead of eating their cream cake :-)

OMG Diane, yeah i remember when the cat jumped into the brooder coop!! The little chicklets and Milly were out on the grass, and i went to scare the cat away and it jumped INTO the coop in fright...it then realised it had nowhere to run, jumped back out and ran across the garden past Milly, who flew at it with her claws held out in front of her, screeching...poor cat :D

Red, I adore cats but your description had me howling!! It must've been a real sight to see - just shows what a mom will do to protect her 'babies'.

The site doesn't seem very busy today - I've missed the hens daylight hours because I was cooking butterfly cakes this afternoon and hubby was on the computer. Its rained on and off all day here too.

Hopefully that isn't cakes made from butterflies...

Yes, Red that was a pretty memorable event for us all. Except I guess I forgot which of the cool guys (Luke, Dan, dan, or maybe even a girl - was it Pinkle?) was on line writing about it when it happened. Not Luke I now know.

I can't believe the chickens would give up their chance for some cream cakes! Did they finally venture out?

Lynn - I just heard on channel nine last night that the days will increase by 3 minutes per day now. Sound right? But that we also lost a few seconds when the Sunami set the earth wobbling a bit in 2004...

Hen report: upstairs hens/downstairs cam :)

I loved Red's description; it made me remember when Tuppence was a kitten; I put an old slice of bread out for the chickens, and she had a real thing about bread. So Tuppence went and got stuck in, and failed to notice the chickens stalking up to her and glaring in an outraged fashion. Finally Onion could bear it no more and pecked her on the top of her head...she flew through the catflap as though all the demons of hell were after her!

Ah, a l ovely view of the downstairs pad... I do love the lights and the sign is very clear tonight.

Last night on the Dog Whisperer, the focus was on a lab who had eaten two of the family's pet chickens. Part of the desensitization involved holding a chicken right in front of the dog. I thought the chicken would go nuts...

Yes, rain again. I am NEVER up this early (its 7:30 am here.) Yaaaawn. Anyway, just saw Penny, hiding out in the back there, have a very satisfying shake and remove all that drizzle from herself; while saying: "bluck, bluck, bluck." Hopefully this wasn't swearing, so my text doesn't get censored... Her glorious orange collar really stood out while she shook herself. Now they are all just cluckity clucking around in the covered area. And the rain pours on.

Diane; if you're a therapist, you should recommend Hencamming as a calming pastime to your more strung-out clients - I find it really soothing to watch the girls just going about their business.

I obviously timed it just right today. Penny has gone off to bed, followed by Tilly. Milly just jumped from the ground up to almost the top of the ladder and is now taking in the last bit of proper daylight before she joins them. I can see her feet and downy white belly!! One of the others is walking around behind her - every now and then I see a much earker bit pass behind her. Oh, there she goes, off indoors.

Right, I'm off to the knitting again. Hubby has gone to coach his ladies team so I get control of the TV while I knit!

And I timed it just wrong - they were in bed when I went to sleep and now that I'm up, they have had a whole day that I missed and are in bed again. Kate & Lynn are right. Its time for summer!

Kate your description of Milly going up to sleep was wonderful. :) Thank you.

CC if I did tell my clients about hencam, then it would no longer be a relaxing place for me. Selfish therapist... Its a strange career. It is unethical for me to interact with any clients in my private life: its called a "dual relationship" and is against The Code. In a small rural area that makes socializing tricky sometimes.

It must be mere hours before the blanket is complete now, yes? Soon your fingers will be happy again Kate!

I've worked out there are at least 10 hours of knitting to do, plus edging it in ribbon to cover the 'rough' bits! Will have to wash it before I edge it too, just in case it shrinks/stretches a bit. I thought I'd get it finished before new year, but I don't think its likely. Plus she's having twinges - ooo er!!

Nothing to report on the cam - can see part of a black hen, a tiny bit of Milly, oh, and another black hen just stood up at the back.

Keep hencam for yourself Diane - you need some relaxation therapy too after helping with their problems I'm sure!

Oh No. Just heard the first firework. And there's another. REALLY LOUD. Poor hens. Although they didn't seem too upset on Guy Fawkes Day.

Do you think cats have this ability to decide what is and what isn't part of the current reality? You know - they can decide something just doesn't exist and then, it just doesn't!

Very likely, but I think they're just weird! Foggy was lying on my bed staring at the wall (about a foot from the top) yesterday, and when I spoke to her she looked at me then whipped her head back to stare at the wall as if there was something there. I immediately feared a spider, but nope, nothing. She was wide-eyed looking at it but there was nothing at all on it. Think she was teasing me!

Happy new year, each. Kate; best wishes for the blanket and its soon-to-be-contents! If you want help with that edging, I have a splendid glue-gun. Or a stapler, but that would be a bit scratchy. See? I'm not totally heartless about sprogs...! :)

OMG - I just made the 1,000th post! I was hoping to avoid that because I hear that I now have to make a speech.

    Ahem...ok....

TO ALL HENCAMMERS & HENKEEPERS (& HENS).

(Clears throat.) It has been a pleasure knowing you and experiencing the largeness of the world through your collective eyes in 2007. Each one of you is a unique (and I mean that in a good way) and heart expanding person. I am honored to be a member of this very special community. I love the way that we share our ups and our downs and our world views with each other. I especially love how we not only tolerate but we actually respect the differences between us.

(Lump in throat.) I want to pay special mention to the three little feather covered beings who have made this all possible: Milly, Tilly, and Penny. And to remember our beloved chicks, our little lamb, the two rabbits, the baby mice, and dear Eva.

I wish each and every one of you (and all your loved ones, whether or not they understand this hen fixation) a continuing series of excellent new years for many many years to come.

    Much Love,

    Diane

    (How was that Kate?) :P

Oh noes the cam is down!! Sorry everyone, I do apologise...was too busy hosting a party last night to realise that the cam wasn't working :)

I will try and get it fixed but i am *slightly* hungover and rushing round trying to make the house look presentable for my parents' return...was the cam bust last night then?!? Aaagh! I don't believe it, me and my friends were in the coop waving at you all but you mustn't have seen us then :D

And Diane, it wasn't ME swearing, I'm a very polite drunk ( :D ) it was my friend!

Diane - excellent speech!!! Top marks and gold stars etc. I think the 1000th post came at just the right time - either side of midnight (depending on where in the world you were viewing at the time).

Lois - I think "fowl" language is acceptable in a chicken coop!! (sorry, awful pun!)

Red - I can't believe we didn't get to see you and your friends waving at us! I'd have still missed it though - was watching Jools Holland and his Hootenanny programme on the BBC. It was really good! Thanks for fixing the cam, though I can only see top halves of chickens its better than none at all!

Hey Ollie, did you see Red in the coop? Apparently Tilly likes Jelly and Milly Vol-au-vonts (or however its spelt). Penny must be tucking into the trifle too.

Milly has wandered up the ladder now, but turns around as soon as Red speaks to her. They all make a lovely noise when they hear or see Red heading their way - so sweet!

Love your sweatshirt Red. For those who missed it it says:
    "If its got a face"
then 4 pictures - sheep, pig, cow, chick,
    "I don't eat it".

    Someone else has arrived.

Yes Red, I can see your fingers!! The hens are such fussy things, but know how to get hand=fed by you!

I think I heard Red say there was a cat on the roof of the coop sometime between last night and today. Perhaps it was looking for a place to hide from the fireworks!
