Condolences to Scarlet, Neil, Helen, Tilly, Penny, and all the hencam followers. Milly definitely had an impact on many people, and provided countless hours of entertainment, laughs and stories. I feel very privileged to have had the rare opportunity of cuddling Milly just over a year ago. The moment will stay with me forever.... it's not every day you get to go to another country and hug a very special chicken !! RIP Milly oxox

I just wanted to complement Neil on a wonderful 'farewell' to Milly. I sat and cried but it also brought back many happy memories - I had fogotten about watching her hatch out the chicks until I saw the photographs.

Lilian - I'm glad you got to see Milly before she left for the big coop in the sky.

Shattering news. I'm at the library on a computer - because I broke mine. So, I'm tring very hard not to cry. (Thanks CC for getting in touch to let me know.) Neil what you wrote was SO sweet and soothing. She will be missed forever. But also remembered for her wonderful beingness. There was no one like Milly to brighten up the day. I am so so very glad that she stills lives here in the recorded history of Hencam. And in all of our hearts. My own goes out to you Red, Neil and Helen.

Thanks NN for your warm welcome. I kept several pet chickens when I was a kid. I loved them very much and they were good companion. The HK Government no longer allows keeping pet chickens at home due the risk of bird flu. Nevertheless, I missed those little fellows. I'm glad to find the hencam and I'll keep checking it out everyday. :)

My heart goes out to Neil, Helen and especially you Scarlet.
Milly will be remembered as a special hen who brought so much joy with her.
Neil that was a wonderfully sensitive and well written piece you wrote about Milly, the photos are lovely, thank you for sharing.

OH Red I am so very sorry to hear about Domino, and so quickly after the loss of Milly as well. You did the kindest thing possible for her. It must have been so painful. I am glad you managed to be able to say a proper good bye to her, it does help take a tiny bit of the pain away. She had a nice life with you all and was well loved. I am sure she is in animal heaven now keeping Milly company. I am thinking of you with much love xxxx

Hi Red and family (you too Lyle). I just wanted to add my sympathies and condolences on the loss of Domino. It is very hard to lose 2 much loved pets in such a short time. You did the right thing for her, and I am sure she had a very happy life with you. Quality of life is more important than quantity, and releasing them from pain is the last great thing we can do for our pets.

RIP Domino - have fun playing with Milly at the bridge.

I asked the Head Monk at the Buddhist Monastery, on Whidbey, if he would do a ceremony for Milly and Domino’s passing. I wasn’t sure if he would be okay doing this for a chicken and rabbit. But he said yes. So, this morning at 5:30 am, I made an offering of nettle tea and also dried cranberries and a small group of us chanted the sutras along with drumming and ringing temple bells, a candle and incense. The part of the sutra that the Monk read mentioned sweet Milly and Domino by name. I couldn’t help sobbing my heart out at times but I still managed to chant most of the other sutra. The “Heart Sutra,” in fact. Afterwords, we meditated for an hour while the birds in the forest surrounding the zendo sang to the rising sun.

I bought one years back it cost me a tenner, but was worth it. I had a look at the filling as it was starting to wear out and when I realised it was just grain like that I feed to the hens. I had an experiment with making one. I have made loads of them now as all the family wanted one each. They cost next to nothing to make.

I spose I could get the radio on the telly but I only got a cheap radio in my kitchen as they get mucked up in no time at all with the kitchen being so small, it is near the cooker so gets clagged up after a couple of years then I will chuck it out and get another cheapie.

I think that used to be the bestest time ever for music Ann so many different sounds and isn't it funny how the words come back to you as you sing along.

I remember it as being a bit chilly, waiting for the bus to go to work and shivering like a jelly. My Mum and Dad made sure it was not a free and easy time for me as I had to be home by 9 o'clock! Still, it was fun and I had a pony called Cindy who I loved very much. My Dad bought her for me after he studied to pass enough exams to become a nightschool teacher. (he had worked reparing cranes in Consett Steel Works). All the money he earned he spent on buying my pony and renting an allotment to keep my stable on. When I got married in 1969 I paid for Cindy to live on a farm until she died in 1972. Anyway, Tell Laura I Love Her was one of my favourites!

I love that song too (might look on itunes for it!) - my mom was always playing albums. Elvis was her favourite, Jim Reeves, Glen Miller (liked that album too), and my brother was/is a DJ so there was always lots of music in the house. When I'm in the car I flick between Smooth (I am in the Midlands!), Heart, and Kerrang. It was Kerrang that led me to Hencam so I'll always be grateful to them.

You are right Stuart, I have an old chair in the greenhouse down near the chickens and I enjoy nothing better than sitting in the sun (when it comes out) watching the girls scratch about. Silver (my dog) gets a very resigned look on her face and lies down with an exagerated sigh whenever I get my chair out of the greenhouse.

Hi Ann, I too have a old chair in my green house, it is so nice to have a sit in a sunny spot even in the winter if you are out of the wind the sun can be very warm. I don't have a dog now but I am usually accompanied by a cat either one of mine or one from up the road. My hens love to have company and chunter away in a gossipy sort of way.

My garden is very small (recently landscaped - the photos are on the forum somewhere!) and I have a lovely bench that I put in the shed through winter and get out when the weather improves. Hubby loves it especially early morning before it gets too warm. The cats often go out and keep him company - from a distance of course. Heaven forbid that they'd sit on a lap sometime! Hens sound like wonderful company.

    Keeper of the hens

Ooh, we're been silenced by the system!!! :(

edit I have no idea how that happened - it seems one of the extensions on the forum went berserk and decided to delete all posts, it took some tracing to find and now I'm in trouble with Helen as we're supposed to be going out now...

Apologies for the downtime, I'm not really sure why it decided to do this right now, or even how it happened...

I couldn't get onto hencam at all last night - neither the web site or the forum. Tried several times from 10ish onwards so maybe there was something going on via the provider. Glad its all back and working now!

yay the forum is back on. Been a while since I said Hello, so Hello all :) I have one monarch butterfly flying around. The one I was posting pics on here died in the chrysalis the hot days I think cooked it :( but another one hatched last week and he's still hanging around. I'm really wishing the other 2 chrysalis would hatch so he can have some friends and hopefully make some babies. I missed him hatching lol There's a light dusting of snow of the hills so I think the hot days. Having a bit of a problem with ferrets at the moment. Caught one but another is still out there and is very full. Took 7 chicks in oneday little so and so. So I only got 1 silver spangled hamburgh left and 5 silkie chicks. The older sebrights and araucanas weren't touch. I have made sure their houses are ferret proof. well I hope, just been told they can dig so not so safe. I ended up buying another swan plant with 3 more caterpillars on it.

Here's a pic with his wings open. Apparently the black dots means he is a boy. So hopefully there is a girl in the other 2 chrysalis. They are starting to change colour so I'm hoping they will hatch very soon and this time I will see it!!

beautiful butterflies B&W. Sad about the chicks, naughty ferrets, I know it's all part of the life cycle of nature but I still find it hard and hate to see things killed in that way.

Sorry Lynn, I've done the same I always assume it's my PC if something doesn't work and never think it might actually be the website, although with hencam you should maybe know by now that it's run with baked-bean tins and string!

(I'm joking! It's all very reliable normally!) :surprised:

Hi B&W, I wondered where you had been and how the chicks and chrysalis were doing. I am so sorry to hear about your Chicks that is dreadful for you. Are ferrets wild animals where you are ?? My son keeps them as pets, but mainly for rabbit control.
How beautiful the butterflies are, shame you missed them hatching though. Still you got two more to go and a new lot to look forward to. How lovely if they could start breeding naturally in your garden, that would be just superb.

I had trouble last night trying to watch the girls. The sound was working but I would just get still pictures of the girls. Ferrets are wild here. It's now illegal to keep them as pets in NZ. They kill too many native birds and my chooks lol but yes it's one of those things, circle of life as Trevs Mum pointed out. I brought 2 chook houses this week and have to pick them up. Hopefully they will be ferret proof. Also some more chooks (they came with the chook hen) barred plymouth rocks and some crossbreeds. Exciting

Thanks for the pictures of the butterfly B&W - he is very beautiful. I'm so sorry about your chicks - is it irresponsible owners that have caused the ferret problem, or have there always been wild ones where you live?

Ferrets and stoats where brought into NZ to control the rabbits, didn't think what else they would eat though!! lol just the way people where way back then. Didn't think of the consequences of importing animals from other countries. Now the government and farmers spend millions each year controlling rabbits, ferrets, possums etc The other 2 chrysalis will hatch tomorrow yay!! The 1st butterfly is still flying around my garden looking for a friend. Hopefully he will stay just one more day, fingers crossed. He has other butterflys to hang out with but they are alot smaller than him.

We have the same sorts of problems over here B&W we even have highly invasive plants, like Japanese knot weed and water balsm. I was reading the other day that they are now introducing a moth or beatle to control the knotweed and have said it wont kill any of our native species......well we shall have to wait and see.

It's either raining VERY hard or it's hailing like mad. Sounds heavy which ever it is doing. Penny and Tilly don't seem to mind it much, they are both asleep.
