    Keeper of the hens

Ahhh I got to see my chucks today!!! :cheerleader: :cheer:

They were *so* cute, but I gave my dad a list of chores he needs to do that he's lagging behind in hahaha...I did offer to do them myself but he said I couldn't because the shed was locked, and then the house was locked blah blah blah... :001_rolleyes:

But I grabbed both girls (after disturbing Tilly whilst she was laying!) and got them on my lap. Penny settled really well and my dad who was watching said "she'd never do that for me..." (I'm sure she would he just doesn't give her a chance!). Then she got bored and plopped off so I got Tilly, who weighs about 3x more than Penny!

I picked them some dandelion but they weren't very interested. They were gorgeous though and I gave them lots of eyebrow kisses - I swear they were both rolling their eyes! Penny's moulting and we're gonna cut Tilly's pooey bum feathers away too.

I gave them plenty of lettuce and raisins, but even after spending ages in there with them Penny wouldn't accept treats from my hand :( I snared her in the end and got her sitting on my lap for a while, then let her hop down when she wanted.

Think I'm back at my parents' to help trim Tilly's pooey bum feathers - lovely!

Well, me and Lyle had the dreaded task of chopping off Tilly's pooey feathers...I held the chuck and Lyle dealt with the poo hahaha!!

Tilly was really well behaved, and Penny watched her worriedly from the coop. Here are some pics afterwards...we let them on the top grass as a treat, just don't tell my mum!

Erm...well I assume her feathers won't regrow until after this year's moult now. It usually takes 4 - 8+ weeks.

    Keeper of the hens

Tilly is proving me wrong, her feather tufts are growing on her bum already!
I saw the first sign of her age today  She took aaages to get up and down the steps, and she used to be such a powerful scratter and isn't anymore, it was a little sad...she followed me around the garden and let me lift plant pots and rocks so she could get the bugs though, and let me and Lyle give her some strokes. She was, of course, obsessed with eating the paint off the side of the house!!

No sign of Penny's age though, bless her, and we're slowly building our friendship back up! She lets me feed her from hand and lift stones up for her now.

Also, they're both laying - Penny through her moult and Tilly is laying more than she used to, I swear!! Lyle was very impressed because he went to check the nest box and there were three eggs there (two Tilly's and one Penny egg!); mum and dad will be thinking they've not laid any whilst they've been away mwahaha :tooth:

Lyle was taking photos of the girls to show to his parents too, I'll have to get them up here at some point

New Specks is broody at the moment I think all this hot weather has made here think it is spring again. Mine won't eat chocolate cake, not that they get a chance to have it very often.

Anyway, I snuck the girls a lot of treats before they went to bed, and let them have a romp around the garden, making sure my mum didn't see! ;)

The photos are a bit bleached thanks to the sun setting and my over-exuberant flash!

That flipping bird!! For about 2 days I kept sneaking down to the coop to try and find out where it was coming in and out from, but couldn't spot any obvious holes - it should all be blocked up - the girls had red mite ages ago and I don't want that repeating anytime soon!

If anyone spots it again, let me know!

Doubt they can fit through the coop's chicken-wire - they did used to get through triangle-shaped holes in the eaves but I blocked those (or so I thought!)...

It's weird that if it was another chicken it would be hounded and pecked mercilessly... A possibly disease-carrying mite-ridden sparrow is seemingly ignored with disdain!

These are the sizes for nest box holes, so the chicken wire needs to be somewhat smaller guage.

•25 mm for blue, coal and marsh tits
•28 mm for great tits, tree sparrows and pied flycatchers
•32 mm for house sparrows and nuthatches

I couldn't tell if it was a house or hedge sparrow.

I'd imagine it was a house sparrow, we get a lot of them around my parent's...those, magpies and wood pigeons mostly. Oh, and lots of bats

I just saw the little birds back in the pen, the girls haven't gone to bed. it's having a fun time scratching around again.
I didn't see how it got in, the cam moves too fast for that.

It might be a good idea if Neil just had the cam on the coop for a day or two so we get a good chance of seeing where they get in.

We had a beautiful sun set last night Lynn, all pink, lilac and purple. It was a shame I wasn't somewhere nice to get a good picture of it all.

It was raining horrible here last night too...

Now the clocks have gone back an hour, the girls will be going to bed around 3.30pm. I doubt even I'll get to see them until it stays lighter longer!

Hi Diane and Lynn! I know Halloween is a big thing in America, but it is growing over here. Hencam always put on a good show each year though! I used to pretend we weren't in, but its quicker and quieter just to answer the door, hand over sweets, and close the door again!

    Happy Halloween!

They're too spooked to come up our footpath in the dark. And if they did i wouldn't open the door unless they had a proper Beggar's Licence...:_oh_really:
