    Keeper of the hens

We had quite a covering of snow this morning, which was a bit worrying as Helen had to set off for work very early, and I needed to get to work in one piece so I had to shovel our hill clear - finally a chance to use my new dung-pusher / snow-shovel!

    exciting footage here!

I'm not sure why Elsie has bald spots, it seems she was moulting but isn't growing her feathers back. She has some red patches of skin too, so we're going to be keeping an eye on her. She is fine in herself though, and eating and drinking well. My dad's going to clean out and DE the coop, just to be safe

    Keeper of the hens

She's still not growing feathers - not sure how much longer to leave it until we get her looked at - I'll maybe give her a few weeks as she's obviously not poorly other than she looks a bit oven-ready!

I was wondering if she was allergic to the straw in the nest box... I might try just using wood shavings (unless she's allergic to that!)

She's still a complete mealworm loving gut-bucket so maybe she's just having a very weird moult.

Neil, I've had some moult that same way and it took forever for the feathers to grow back, but they did finally. I had one that lost them for a couple of months before she grew them back, and it was in the middle of Winter.

If we'd left any then she'd have no reason to not be broody! And a broody hen stops laying, so they can concentrate on hatching the eggs (and running the fever necessary to keep them at the right temperature).

Like CC says she'll probably come out of it on her own but she might need 'help' realising there's no point sitting on eggs that won't hatch...

    Keeper of the hens

It was probably Helen - I saw Scarlet but not at our house (an emergency trip to buy doggy painkillers!), she was last at ours just before Zoey was spayed, so sometime last week.

I'm not sure what Sophie and Elsie are doing - I think they 'miss' Ivy from the flock so are seeing what's going on, or maybe wanting to lay an egg but aren't sure!

If they get too close to Ivy they'll get warned off (and get a peck too!) so maybe that's it too - going up to lay an egg and seeing someone's already there - I suppose it's like when you go to a public toilet and there's loads of people in there - it can be hard to 'go'... haha!

Or they may just be mental chickens...

There's Ivy hunkered down in her own little heaven.
Sophie saying "Hello" through the netting to the black and white cat - I've forgotten his name...
Now he's walking about on the shed roof next door, peering into the clear coop roof.
The other day Sophie was having a conversation with a very noisy magpie that was taking a walk on the coop top.
Elsie seems to be growing new feathers now.

Ivy came downstairs for about 20minutes to exercise her legs a little.

Neighbour noise can be frustrating. Mine have occasional barbecues but its always reasonable hours and volume! They usually let us know in advance too. The other side are quiet except for the dogs, but that doesn't bother me, anything that keeps scallywags away is ok by me! However, one son and his wife sit outside and smoke, and if our door is open the stink drifts in. Not nice at all.

The odd party is ok as we all make noise sometimes which could annoy the neighbours - we watch the occasional film and worry about the bass so can't complain too much.

We're very lucky neighbour-wise, one of the neighbours next to my mum's was jailed for armed robbery!!

My neighbour has Staffordshire Terriers which win all sort of prizes. They took in an invalid friend's Staffy but she wined all the time, mostly in the very large kennel just near my back window. However she has gone back home now. The dog, that is.

My next challenge will be when this week's mating comes to fruition and there are a number of pups to listen to!

Otherwise I have rarely any complaints about the neighbours.

We live in the middle of a big school. There are 1,500 kids there, and we have had hardly any problem in 26 years from the kids. The school themselves though are a pain, believing themselves to be above the law when it comes to planning and noise, and there is a high-handed "business manager" (I kid you not!) who thinks he owns the place. I would't complain about the kids, as on the whole they're a great bunch, and I have no time for people who move into a place then complain about the status quo. My friend rang the church bells in a village where a newcomer complained about the bells in the 500 year old church and told them not to ring on a Sunday as 'everyone is in bed'!

Yes CC, people like that annoy me too. Do they not think the church is going to ring bells, or the racetrack have Motorsport, or the busy main road have big trucks?! If you don't want to hear it don't move there. On the other hand, I do feel sorry for people who live somewhere and then have their lives blighted by things like a new distribution centre using their lane as access, or a venue creating parking nightmares, but that is the fault of the planners for not ensuring such things are catered for. Redditch council gave permission for a mosque on the understanding their would be no call to prayer and they park in the local B&Q. Forward planning!

Tescos were granted permission as long as they built flats at the same time. Three days before they were trumpeting the Grand Opening, only to be told 'Not without building the housing association flats which you seem to have conveniently forgotten'! The flats were built, VERY quickly...

Really? The camera, you mean? I've found the forum every day when I've poked my nose in to see if anything's going on and it's always been all right, but my pooter doesn't seem to show the Hencam anyway so I never bother looking!

And I thought it was my computer which, like CC's, doesn't always show the coop.
I do miss my daily fix watching the chucks being so calm and peaceful.
Red will be back soon, I'm sure.

But so are the mites... boooh. :(

The DE doesn't seem to be doing it's stuff which is strange as they can't become resistant to it. I'm wondering if it's absorbed some moisture and so isn't as effective? If it doesn't start working in the next few days I might try drying some in the cooker (don't tell Helen) and trying again.

I've taken to scraping the mites around the wooden hatch each morning with a flat scraper - it makes a horrible (but satisfying) popping noise.

    Itching again!

You may have to try something stronger on them, Neil. I hate to have to resort to chemical solutions, but once in a while I have to do it. :face-sad:
Thank you for getting hencam back online for us, Neil.

    Thanks everyone

The move went incredibly well; everything fit in one lorry-road, Lyle's parents helped with all the moving, Lyle's grandparents have bought us a brand new oven (house didn't come with one) so we are very grateful to everybody!

    Missed this place though! :P

Whoop, whoop!! All's well again in Hencam!

    Red's back, incredibly fast.

I can see the chucks pecking away, so soothingly.
I assume they have mites on their skin but I haven't noticed that they preen or scratch themselves more than normal.

    Oooooh...
    I can see chickens again!
Elsie has grown some pretty fluffy lace knickers, while Ivy is still spending her time up in the nest box. Sophie seems to be as much the boss as usual.
    Lovely...
Thanks once again, Neil, for this little patch of peace and normality in our day.

    Well done Neil.
The new camera set up has improved the quality quite a lot.

It shows Elsie's bright pink bum a treat! I thought she was growing new downy feather some time ago but no sign of that now.
She really is going to need some knitted knickers very soon.
