We've had 50/60mph gales (again!) - thought the recent milder weather was too good to be true... Helen drove home in snow last night!

I'm still waiting for spring, I'm sure it's just around the corner!

No way! I honestly had no idea, that's really cool :)

We looked for fitting names that were from the 'correct' country for the breed of hen, so we needed two German names (Claudia, pronounced "Clow-deer" and Frieda), and a Russian name (Olga) for the Russian Orloff.

Edit: I think we *have* renamed Frieda to Hedwig (at least, Helen was calling her Hedwig all last night whilst she was feeding her from her hand) and it is a German name so it still fits... and she does look very owly. :)

There were hardly any branches when this coop was installed. They've just gradually increased.
Of course, now I realise that they perch on the artificial branches at night inside the coop!

    Keeper of the hens

    Everything isn't alright, sorry :(

The PC that has run hencam for 10+ years (and originally cost over a thousand pounds!) has finally died - a permanent, final death.

If you want the technical details, the PC used a RAID array of two hard drives in stripe format - this can speed up the system but means if one hard drive dies, you lose all your data as there is no redundancy built into it.

One of the hard drives has totally failed (it won't even spin up) - so I've lost everything - windows install, hencam backups, configurations, streaming setup - the lot. :(

I'm currently in the process of buying a replacement and getting it all set up and configured - hopefully in the next few days.

Just thought you guys should know! It's not the end of hencam... yet.

    Keeper of the hens

Well, that was a long painful process!

Bought a replacement PC - second-hand on ebay - paid a bit more and tried to get one that was actually silent (as it currently sits in the room under our bedroom and you used to be able to hear it at night) and was a bit more energy efficient than the previous one - hopefully our electric bills won't go up too much (it's been a blessing whilst it's been down - cheaper bills!)

Spent many nights installing, configuring and setting up the PC (it came without an operating system and everything to do with hencam's streaming configuration was lost), but I couldn't get it to work - the PC won't boot with the streaming hardware is plugged in (which takes the TV signal from the cameras and sends them to the website).

Thankfully (and I hope you don't mind me mentioning CC - will remove if you do!) - CC donated a couple of days ago which meant I could purchase a different bit of streaming kit which has worked - it seems to be playing nicely and I *think* we're back online!

So thank you CC, hencam owes you a big one :)

    Keeper of the hens

Haven't really had chance to have a catch-up with you all, but I think it's been mentioned we might be moving?

The hens will of course be moving with us - and so will hencam hopefully.

However the cost of upkeep, the additional electricity it uses, not to mention the logistics of having power and cabling for four cameras and a microphone running from the chicken coop into a PC which needs to be kept indoors and on all the time is a bit of a drain to be honest.

I won't be able to drill holes in window frames for the cabling - but I do have some possible solutions, but it depends on a few requirements been met (for example - power and wifi in the garage!) - so it might not be the end yet. I hope it's not.

I just read the Good Bye to Milly that Neil wrote. And cried all over again, 8 years later.

I wonder if I ever told you what happened over here on Whidbey Island when she died...?

I went that morning to the Buddhist monastery that I am a member of. It was just me and the monk who lived there. I asked him if we could do a sutra for someone who had died. That involves putting a treat on a piece of white paper along with a cup of tea, on the altar, for an offering. Then chanting two different chants and ringing bells. Saying the name of the departed.

He said yes and asked me what the name was. I said Milly. He said, what is her last name? So I had to say, she's a hen. He only stared at me for a second or two. Then he said, ok, well you should prepare the offering.

Together at 4 am in the morning in a cold monastery hall, sitting on cushions on a polished wood floor, the monk and I chanted for Milly, sending her blessings. He said a blessing of his own for Milly and for all animals who might be alone in the wild and forgotten. While I cried my heart out.

I walked toward it, toward the wall it was coming from, heart in throat. It was really loud. As I walked passed my computer I realized... The girls, having a nice time in their yard. Whew.

Kate, your laughing makes me laugh too. Contagious.

LJ the Wondergeek has sorted out (most) of my tech probs, cancelled a potentially expensive broadbean contract and found a way to slash my telephone bill. I would be far happier with technology if I could have a mahogany computer with brass fittings and a wind-up handle.
Having gained control over my emus again I told Julie that her presence is requested on Hencam and that Diane wants to bombard her with spam emus... :D

How lovely that you have a techie wizard CC, I can work some stuff out myself through trial and error but usually get G/N to do it for me. It sorts of starts off with something like...... "Well its your turn to do the ironing OK,... well that's unless you would rather to sort out why I can not access the printer from my lap top anymore" works like a dream every time Ha ha.

Dont worry about the spelling Diane we all know what you mean, that auto correct thingie does my head in and I would rather spell something wrong than use it. Hats off to you for persevering with it. So glad we gave you a laugh Kate I so love to hear peoples stories and the more comical the better xx

I've got lazy over the years - I knew on a typewriter if I'd made a mistake, but on an iPad it seems impossible to keep track and then the darn thing changes words randomly. Some of them are pretty funny sometimes though!

CC that is awesome. I hope Trev's Mum visits us here soon!

NN I agree, CC is very lucky to have her tech support person. Your description of how you get poor G/N to do it made me laugh. Thanks for giving me a pass on spelling errors. Yes, Kate, I look at it sometimes and..."Autocorrect (which has become a person to me-and is telling me at this very moment that Autocorrect is spelled wrong)...you $#*($^@!, WHY would you take an ordinary word and replace it with that wrong and completely obscure and inopportune word? WHY!?!?!"

LOL That, however, with the music teacher, was very funny, CC

Hey everyone: Shobhna checked in on Facebook Messenger to say (once she has HER techie stuff resolved) she will be back on hencam and she wants me to say hello! :_party::_party::_party::_party:

How lovely it will be to hear from Shobhna and Trev's Mum, be like a big family reunion we can have cake and every thing.... do say Hi to her from me xx
Diane, its just a good way to get what I want with G/N I call it options!!! When we moved here many years back I suggested we got hens and he said oh no I dont think so...anyhow I bade my time and waited a couple of months and said I had been doing some research on goats and found out they made really good pets. All of a sudden hens seemed like a fantastic idea that he had thought of all by himself......See no worries, jobs a good one and all sorted out amicably.

Ah, that's the Unscrupulous Developer Principle, NN; Apply to build 10 hideous flats in a conservation area = gets booted out. Apply to build one dwelling after that - seems reasonable, so granted. (Except the 1 dwelling is big enough to be turned into...10 flats. Happening in Marlow as we speak...)

My husband uses a variation of that on me. He finds something he wants, goes on and on and on about it for a few weeks, then says we can't afford it or it's a waste or some other such disappointment, then I end up talking him into it to cheer him up. Then it's my fault it was bought so can't moan. You'd think after 34 years I'd have learnt but I still fall into the trap!

It is 9:30 am here. The sun is still in the hencam yard but the girls are perched and snoozing. It shows you on at 7:40 am, Lynnie - so that would be, what, 4:40 am here? WHAT? Up KIND OF late? Woman!

I just realized, that since I work on-call two night shifts a week, if I have the energy after getting paged - I could come on hencam then. It would be so nice to see the girls going about their day.

Sit up in the chair with a cuppa and watch nonsense tv till you're tired, NN; that's what I do. Annoys the hell out of Tuppence, as after 10:30 the front room is HERS. I went up to bed and watched nonsense TV up there with Sootz. He does like a bit of Tv on the quiet. He is another one that has a time to do things by his inner clock. He starts yodelling if I dont go to bed when he thinks I should. We {thats Sootz and I) usually watch an hour of TV from the documentaries selection. Then G/N turns TV off when he comes up.

But say they've been sleeping on a jacket for ages and you give up and spread the jacket out for them to sleep on you get "What?? That's a JACKET. I'm a CAT . We don't sleep on JACKETS, for God's sake!" Then The Look, the The Back Leg Shake Of Disgust, then The Walk Off.

LOL. There is the cat sensibility and then, as you are all describing here, what they do about it: The Glare; The Yodel. And of course that behavior where they turn their backs on you and flip their tail at you, which could not be more of a "F.... Off" if they actually said it out loud. Maya has started lightly patting me on the cheek when she is hungry, and that includes about 2 am. I am glad she does it, so I know that she is ready to eat but I'm also afraid I'm going to lose an eye.

Happened just this morning to me I go to get the covering lid and as soon as my back is turned this is what happens It was Sainsburys lamb and heart. One of Sootz favorites but not Mickeys

Your descriptions are so accurate! I think we should start writing honest info about the cats that are at rehoming:
"Tiddles looks friendly and will rub the door and paw at it for your attention, but when we open it he'll run out of the cat flap like his tail is on fire"
"This is Slash. She gets her name from the wounds she has inflicted on the staff since she's been here"
"Looking for a friendly lap cat? Then keep walking. Tom will eat your food, pee up the wall, and fight with all the neighbourhood cats, but sit on a lap? Never."
