Crickey, that wind tonight up in Hencam Land sounds way too violent.
Everything looks ok but I'm expecting the whole lot to go sailing away any moment!

We've had 50/60mph gales (again!) - thought the recent milder weather was too good to be true... Helen drove home in snow last night!

I'm still waiting for spring, I'm sure it's just around the corner!

    Very observant NN!

We'll have some pics and the names of the new arrival(s) later this evening. :)

At the moment they're sorting the pecking order... :turkeydance:

I'm so chuffed that one of the new hen's has my name!

I was given the name Olga so that it couldn't be shortened.
But it was, of course, Og,, Oggle, and not forgetting Ollie...

No way! I honestly had no idea, that's really cool :)

We looked for fitting names that were from the 'correct' country for the breed of hen, so we needed two German names (Claudia, pronounced "Clow-deer" and Frieda), and a Russian name (Olga) for the Russian Orloff.

We almost renamed Frieda last night - she looks just like an owl so Hedwig was a strong possibility!

Edit: I think we *have* renamed Frieda to Hedwig (at least, Helen was calling her Hedwig all last night whilst she was feeding her from her hand) and it is a German name so it still fits... and she does look very owly. :)

It's now 6pm BST. Just the very beginnings of dusk.

But please explain to me why ALL, except one, of the hens are perching on the branches?
I haven't seen them do that before.

I think in the wild, the hens would roost on branches, so it looks as though they're living a lovely natural life!

    Thanks for that info CC.
There were hardly any branches when this coop was installed. They've just gradually increased.
Of course, now I realise that they perch on the artificial branches at night inside the coop!

    Keeper of the hens

    Everything isn't alright, sorry :(

The PC that has run hencam for 10+ years (and originally cost over a thousand pounds!) has finally died - a permanent, final death.

If you want the technical details, the PC used a RAID array of two hard drives in stripe format - this can speed up the system but means if one hard drive dies, you lose all your data as there is no redundancy built into it.

One of the hard drives has totally failed (it won't even spin up) - so I've lost everything - windows install, hencam backups, configurations, streaming setup - the lot. :(

I'm currently in the process of buying a replacement and getting it all set up and configured - hopefully in the next few days.

Just thought you guys should know! It's not the end of hencam... yet.

The downside to technology - it doesn't last for ever!
As Ollie says, we really do appreciate everything you do. Don't understand any of the techie stuff but did get the cost. Would a Christmas donation ease the pain?

    Keeper of the hens

Well, that was a long painful process!

Bought a replacement PC - second-hand on ebay - paid a bit more and tried to get one that was actually silent (as it currently sits in the room under our bedroom and you used to be able to hear it at night) and was a bit more energy efficient than the previous one - hopefully our electric bills won't go up too much (it's been a blessing whilst it's been down - cheaper bills!)

Spent many nights installing, configuring and setting up the PC (it came without an operating system and everything to do with hencam's streaming configuration was lost), but I couldn't get it to work - the PC won't boot with the streaming hardware is plugged in (which takes the TV signal from the cameras and sends them to the website).

Thankfully (and I hope you don't mind me mentioning CC - will remove if you do!) - CC donated a couple of days ago which meant I could purchase a different bit of streaming kit which has worked - it seems to be playing nicely and I *think* we're back online!

So thank you CC, hencam owes you a big one :)

    Keeper of the hens

Haven't really had chance to have a catch-up with you all, but I think it's been mentioned we might be moving?

The hens will of course be moving with us - and so will hencam hopefully.

However the cost of upkeep, the additional electricity it uses, not to mention the logistics of having power and cabling for four cameras and a microphone running from the chicken coop into a PC which needs to be kept indoors and on all the time is a bit of a drain to be honest.

I won't be able to drill holes in window frames for the cabling - but I do have some possible solutions, but it depends on a few requirements been met (for example - power and wifi in the garage!) - so it might not be the end yet. I hope it's not.

Wow. Neil and hencam have been through a lot this month! CC it is awesome that you stepped in to help.

Hey, Nanny North just 'friended' me on Facebook. It was such a wonderful surprise. And now it has me wondering who else is on Facebook that I don't realize is there? I'm friends with Red, Shobhna,CC, NN, Lynnie there. Do any of the rest of you (even occasionally) use that media? If so - FRIEND ME - Diane Jhueck. I use it a lot and would love to keep connected with you.
