Wow Janice, that sounds really cool. Too many trees around here - we don't often see anything like that.

Its darkish in the feeding area now. No hens in sight.

Well, looks like everybody is in bed already!!! Looks so dark at about 6:40 local time....Although I walked my dog last night at about the same time here...sun had set, but it was still fairly light with a yellow glow....but it rapidly got darker and darker! We're still on DST here in New Mexico, USA--Mountain Time...we don't switch to standard time until around Nov. 4! This 3 week delay is creating a bit of havoc on our pet schedules!

Milly and a black hen (is it Tilly that's currently scruffy?!!) are staring at me!! Thought they were alone but the 3rd girl has just come forward into the light. They're scratching around and clucking softly. Afternoon girls - nice to check you out from work - don't get the chance very often!

About 6:30 AM local....Is that Tilly on the left? She's standing up and is fussing...basically awake, but now sticking here head back in her feathers. In the middle is Penny, I believe...I can see her comb; looks like she is still sleeping. And Milly is on the right, looks all hunkered down. I wonder what the temperature is there overnight? Last night, here in the high desert of Las Cruces, NM it was 38 degrees F. Tonight, it will be back up to 47. Yes, that seems to be Tilly standing on the left...I could see her featherless patchiness.....Now, she's scratching her beak area with a foot.

    Have a great day, girls!

I checked at about 4.15pm and all I could see was Milly's eye and, when she moved back a little, her face and comb. Its as if she knows we watch her!
They're in the coop now - I think its Penny (she looks HUGE!) standing in front of Milly moving her weight from foot to foot. She's awake - I can see her eye reflecting the light - but the other 2 are curled up behind.

The girls are very busy today, bustling around, scratching and pecking. Milly had hold of something on the ground that she was pecking at until Tilly chased her off it to have a go herself! I'd never noticed Milly's black feathers before - I always thought it was just a shadow on the picture.

Milly is stretching and Penny is craning her neck. Penny is now striding to the front, dead center, It looks like it's time to leave the coop!Penny is heading down, Tilly right behind....Penny now going down the ramp....and she just hopped off! Tilly is now following...cluck, hop....Milly...still sitting in the coop! Come on, Milly, I want to see you before I have to go to bed! Lots of clucking from below and still Milly sits! She's out of camera range now, so I don't know where she is...Oh, here she is, edging toward the ramp...she's turned and is out of sight again....Oh, well, she's up....lots of clucking....the day has begun!!!

Well, it's my usual early AM visit, this time near 6 am local. All are standing up and Tilly just went through a session of scratching and puffing up. Milly and Tilly are rear end to rear end, while Penny is keeping a discrete distance from them, just to the rear. Tilly is pecking at her chest and poking around over her shoulder. They look like three puffballs on stilts sitting there, in sort of a triangular formation. Tilly just let a feather waft down and she's fussing over her shoulder.....

All 3 girls just came running at top speed towards the camera! The door opened and an arm (yours I presume Neil?!) threw a couple of scoops of feed in. The hens are happy now!! Tilly and Penny are in the middle having a good old feed, Mily's just out of view in the bottom right corner - get a glimpse of a feather every now and then! Now she's off up into the coop - going for a lie down Milly?!

Would you believe, that noise also woke me up - some idiot was letting of fireworks which made a really loud bang!

I woke up and heard 2 or three, and I must have disturbed Helen and she said "you just had a dream", so I was telling her that I definitely did not imagine it (and she still didn't believe me), when a final explosion sounded across Wilsden... :D

I just heard a protracted whistle and then a bang - so I came on here to mention it and ... well, it appears to be fireworks. Those aren't legal here, except during certain holidays. Is that true in the UK as well?

Was the cam up in the sleeping quarters 2 hours ago (Kate's post); and now back down in the feeding spot? That's odd...

So Kate, my 'educated guess' is that the hencam October birth order is: Red, your son, Helen and then me. LOL. Did I forget anybody ?

They are on the left side of the coop (facing from my vantage point). Down in the back corner opposite is Milly. Her head is up but I can't make out her eyes, so I'm not sure what she's doing. Penny is now craning her neck, looking down. I think I'm hearing a jet in the background, but I always think I'm hearing things that turn out to be transmission noise!....Well, I'm off to bed myself now..so have a great day, girls! My post was watching them by the water trough thingy, sorry didn't explain it very well. They're hiding at the back again today but look like they're waiting for someone. Do you feed them earlier in the winter thanks to daylight saving time Neil?

There are supposed to be restrictions on fireworks and when they can be let off but the youths in this country don't take any notice and do what they like! It rained a lot yesterday so I'm not surprised you heard it.

Tilly is now standing in front of the lens and blocking the view!

Penny & Tilly are alerting to something. Standing and craning their necks. Milly is still sound asleep; poor little tired moulting one. Penny is definitely doing guard duty. I can't see or hear anything myself. I wonder if it is fireworks?

She seems to be settling back a bit, but still watching. Can't see what Tilly is doing behind her.

    Keeper of the hens

Oh we took the pumpkin out for it's own safety!

We need it for the party tonight, but the hens can have it after :)

Milly's feathers are really coming on now - they start by forming "spikes" growing through the skin (must hurt I think?), it's like nail but cylindrical, then as they grow longer the feathery barbs start to appear, so now she has 1.5 inch long slightly furry spikes sticking out from her neck bless her!

Oh, and I was toying with the idea of setting up the live feed to be of our halloween party... Does anyone think this is a good idea? The hens will already be in bed so it's not like you'll miss anything too exciting from the cam, but possibly all you'll see is dark flashes I'm not sure, I'll have to experiment with the indoor camera....!

Ooo I've just seen some of the party! It was just dark and flashing at first, then the lights came on and there were some poeple around - Neil, I assume you were the "axe murderer" with bloodied leather apron, and Scarlett as Bride of Frankenstein? Then the lights went off and now theres a flashing strobe light with an outline of a person (Scarlett?) and every now and then I can see the pumpkin too. Will keep watching and see if anything else happens. Keep up the "ghould" work!

Ah, finally, Milly is sitting up toward the rear of the coop, while Tilly and Penny are still hunkered down near the front. Milly is basically awake although she's tucked her head in again just now.....and now she's wide awake again. Tilly is stretching, so it looks like the process of waking up has begun! Good to see Milly out from under Penny! Milly just stretched out her neck and opened her mouth as if she were yawning.

Well, girls, have a great day!! I'm off to bed.....

And, the most shocking thing is that it's still intact - the girls don't seem to have pecked at it at all! Maybe if i go put some treats in it might tempt them? They were a bit wary of the two pumpkins this morning, I think they've forgotten how good they taste :)

    Keeper of the hens

Sorry for not moving the cam until just now, we were at Scarlet's parents evening at school and then I had to concentrate on a test for an upcoming job interview (fingers crossed and all that)...

I've been feeling pretty down about my current job for a while now as I haven't had any feedback, positive or bad, about how I'm doing for months, and although my manager is friendly, I just don't know how I'm performing and it's killing me, it's like a weird feeling of drifting along with no rudder. So now anyway I start to worry and think maybe it's his way of telling me I'm not valued, so then I start to feel undermined and devalued...

Anyway, I'm going on, sorry for boring you. :)

Your're not boring me! I know exactly how you feel...Not having any feedback at all is demoralizing at the very least...and can be pretty anxiety provoking if you start to begin to doubt yourself and worry what the boss thinks!!

Nice to see Milly back upfront in full view and not being sat on!! I think she's in between Penny on the left and Tilly in the back.....

Neil , I believe that you are doing a great job in your work place. I am basing this on the fact that you do a great job with hencam as well other things you do such your photography , your help with saving battery hens.... just to name a couple of things. I just can not imagine you not doing a superior job. You seem to be a man who puts his heart into all he does. You most certainly are a wonderful father to a lovely daughter. I do not blame you though for looking at other job possibilites . You may find a job that will be of more interest and satisfaction. Only speaking from my own experince, it is not a good sign if your boss or co-workers suddenly start distancing themselves or totally avoiding you. I noticed this at a job I had once and a friend had inside information that my supervisor was searching for a means of firing me ( because I standing in the way of her " pet worker " being promoted up . ) ( This was a case of my work out shining her choice and because I had more education. ) He advised me to find another job.... QUICKLY . I found another job in my field of social work . My old boss wrote a recommendation. She had always made statements to my face that my narratives were so good that she felt that she had been on the actual visits with me when I went to clients homes. She had raved about what a great job I did as an expert witness in cases that went to Court. She had always scored me as high as she could without giving me a perfect score. I was the one who saved our county $ 4,000,000 in a lawsuit that was filed against our agency because of non delivery of services by workers prior to my employment ( I was the one who was sent out to remedy the situation and provide those services before the Judge's deadline of either provide them by a certain date or the county wolud pay. ) She was tickled pink with my performance until her " pet" and the most incompetent of all the workers was hand picked by her to become supervisor at her retirement. Suddenly it was , " Janice, you used to do a great job , but now your job is only adequate . " The funny thing is that I did not want to be promoted up and would not have tried out for a promotion . I found out later that she was going to recommend that I be fired for incompitence. I was so glad I left ... first. Neil , best wishes with your test . You deserve the best in whatever you decide to do.

Janice, your story sounds so familiar! Another tip: If you are training someone be careful, you may be bounced out in favor of that person! Happened to a friend who was a longtime AT&T worker and I knew it would happen! It happened to me as well, but I left before the axe fell, whereas my friend wound up losing her big-time job and became a AAA travel agent!

Looks like Milly is just about ready to descend to the run and I think that's Tilly following behind.....I think Penny is now going down, too! Yup, they're ready to rumble....I'm off to bed so I"m afraid I won't see them until they go back to bed!!!!

I thought the forum was jammed up - and then I realized I had somehow signed out. If you ever come on and can read but not post; check the sign in / sign out line in the upper left corner :)

Earlier (when I was under self imposed silence) I was noticing that Milly has really huge claws.

Sorry you have felt so badly at work Neil :( It sounds like the one thing that is known for sure is that feedback is, legitmately, important to you when you work and you aren't getting it. And since you aren't, you're guessing about his intentions (or as I say when I do this myself: 'going to the bad place'.) People management is really hard and often done by someone untrained for it. Which I can never understand because staff turnover is expensive and losing people over this kind of thing is bad for a company. The really ironic thing is that HE sounds like he needs some feedback about his management technique... :)

I work in the NHS and find that managers are frequently either clinical staff that have gone into management so have no idea of how to deal with staff, or business people that have no idea of medical need. The caring has gone from the NHS and public expectation far outweighs what's possible to deliver. My boss left about 6 weeks ago and my line manager is now the director who hasn't any idea what I'm doing. I feel valuable but not valued - people doing my job in other trusts get paid next band up but I'm getting no support in trying to get the same band. When I stop getting good feedback and it unsettles me I start looking elsewhere. As a big believer in Fate I find something usually turns up, but the trick is not leaving it too late.

I'm sure your boss does appreciate what you do Neil but has become complacent about telling you. We all need to feel wanted and valued and perhaps that's our driver to finding something better. Good luck with the interview - is it promotion or a move to a new company? Let us know how it goes. Can I just add that I second Janice's comments and WE all appreciate what you do and the little bit of happiness we get from your web site.

    Hi, Diane....
Butting in here...the NHS is the National Health Service. I still have my card from when I was in England working for 6 months back in '86. I registered after I arrived and was handed the card....it felt good to get a healthcard without money changing hands!! I did go to the doctor during that time...my local GP who was from New Zealand and sat across me at his desk...I had "catarrh"...it was winter and it was a mean cold/congestion thing....

Presently, Milly is sitting apart from the two other girls...she is awake as the others are snoozing...The night is still young, right Milly???

Thanks Gloria. Wow - it is amazing to think of free and available health care! I'm self employed so...no insurance :( eek. Altho I mostly go to a naturopath and until recently that wasn't covered by insurance anyway. You worked in the UK - that's very cool! I was there (in London for about a month) in '74, so we missed each other by a few years.

How is mental health handled in the UK then?

Sorry - assumed the NHS was known by everyone! The National Health Service was set up so that everyone had access to health care and dentistry (though the dentistry bit has changed and we do have to pay, but less than private). Everyone pays National Insurance (a type of tax) so if you're ill you go to your GP (general practitioner) or A&E department. Anything that needs more investigation gets referred to a consultant at a hospital. Some people have private medical insurance so they can be seen privately, but its usually by the same doctors, just in nicer surroundings and a lot more costly! Private hospitals don't (as a rule) have intensive care beds and don't do emergency treatment, just planned care.

'Trust' is just the latest cover-all buzz word. The NHS is good at that - change the name and imagine people are taken in by it! The Government give funding to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) who then 'buy' services from hospital 'Trusts' for their local community, and provide community care - doctors, district nurses, dentists, etc. I work for our local PCT and the population is around 200,000 people. 'Band' is a pay grade - each band has about 6 pay points so that you get an increment each year (as long as you're doing the job properly!) until you reach the top.

I don't think people here really appreciate the NHS anymore but they should - the American system may appear better on the surface, but for the poor of the country it really lets them down from what I hear. There's a new Michael Moore film out (Sicko?) that looks at the systems and I must get around to watching it.

Anyway, I've gone on far too long about that - sorry! The hens look happy today - Milly is destroying the big pumpkin, its lost its face! Tilly has been standing on the plant pot having a flap!!!

Thanks for that note Kate. I lived in Canada for about 3 years as a kid - sounds like the UK has a similar medical system. I think it would be GREAT to have socialized medicine. Its not just the poor, I'm probably squarely in the middle class, and there is no way I can afford health insurance - which would run roughly $400.00 or more a month!

We should have a Hencam Sicko watching party!

So is mental health care private pay in the UK?

Oh yah, the girls: They are curled up sleeping in their usual pecking order. :) There is a new wierd sound tho. I think I get what Lynn was saying in the other post! It sounds like a sheet of metal springing back & forth or being hit by something. The hens are just sleeping away tho, so maybe its 'cam noise.'

Ooops, sorry then (re: the 'children' comment.) What is Bonfire Night?

Poor Ellie. We all stay close to home on the 4th of July and New Years ( which are the only days fireworks are allowed where I live) to comfort all the animals in the house. On the 4th, tho we do go to a wonderful professional display at the end of the harbor near my house. Holly (the dog) comes along. Has your Aunt ever tried Rescue Remedy (I think its made by the Bach Flower people --- Gloria might know)? Just a few drops of the stuff can really calm an animal (including a person) down.

I'm familiar with Rescue Remedy and have used it a few times with one of my nervous dogs, but that was a long time ago....I never really could tell if it worked or not, since Toro is always so highstrung!

Just to check, I tried reloading the page but still just darkness. Maybe Milly pulled the plug on the cam in protest of all the noise. Although they certainly haven't seemed to care much about it.

This is, apparently, Bonfire night - so Hen Keepers; what do you do? Don your Halloween costumes for a final time and leap around the fire singing lusty ballads? Give out prizes for whomever can leap over the fire without getting singed? What's the history behind this celebration? Is it a way to clean up the neighborhood before winter sets in?
