Holly is at the doggie hair dresser (Hairy Barker) getting her bi-annual shampoos & cut. She looked so lost as I walked away from her. She kept pulling at the lease to follow me. We spend 24/7 together, because she comes to work me. Is it silly that I feel like crying at the moment...?

I can only see one black hen and half a wall, but there are some odd noises on the cam. I assume its gusts of wind getting in there but it sounds like someone moving around. Black hen doesn't seem bothered though!

OH, my! It's an hour later and it is really a very nasty rain!! Wind and rain...is there sleet, too?

Only one black hen visible...what a terrible night it seems to be!
We're having rain in Southern NM--it was warm today, though....it started this afternoon and is still going at about 6:30 pm....Forecast calls for more tomorrow, with possible flood warnings here and there..
We're really into winter now!! Several gray days in a row and rain last night, part of today, and tomorrow.

By New Year's, the worst should be over!!!! LOL!!

The camera is picking up those external 'voices' again. Can the hens hear it? Penny (or Tilly - which one has more brown under their chin, coz it was the other one!?) was looking into the camera for AGES! She's back again now. It's like they're waiting for something (or someone)!

Hi (back to you) Neil! And to Red. Can't see you - just the feeding area with its pretty lights. No chickens in view either.

Its SNOWING (in Washington) - poor Lynn :(

Ah suddenly we are in the sleeping area. I seem to be on at cam moving time and have just Ridden the Cam - 2 times in one week! I can see one & a half brown hens snuggled up in the back.

Looking back out my window - still snowing. It looks like we have about a quarter inch... Maybe Lynn has escaped it - being further south.

Neil is whistling. :) Pretty cute.

Alright - wish I could stay but I have to go to work ON SATURDAY !! Bye.

What am I seeing on cam right now?

Both brown hens are on a rail apiece. If they are still facing each other then they are both leaning into each other in that *kiss* we've seen before, only now they are leaning while on their rails and their beaks are together and pointing to the floor - lower than the rail or any part of their bodies.

Oh. Nope - it was one hen facing with tail to the other while the other was the one leaning. Because she just slipped, caught herself and turned around on the rail so that they are now bottom to bottom - with significantly less danger of falling :) (As she stood, I got to catch a glimpse of Milly back there all comfortable in the nest box.)

Weather report: Still snowing on Whidbey (about 1/2 an inch has stuck on the ground now - supposed to be washed away by rain tomorrow.) What about you Lynn? Shall we go visit Gloria in sunny N Mexico now?

Thank you Gloria - I'm so cold I just invited myself (& Lynn :)) Good to know the welcome mat is out.

No wind but it snowed all day. I'm wearing those mittens that have cut outs for the finger tips, as I type. (I'm a coldness weinie.) 64 degrees! What is that like I wonder. Can't remember. Its about 32 here.

The girls are actually sitting bum to bum (I can tell by their wing pattern) which is good because one of them nearly fell earlier. Although, since she DIDN'T fall, I guess it wasn't a *near fall* either...

Awww - palaminos Lynn :) My favorite childhood horse was my sister's horse Cookie. She was a palamino Tenessee Walker. I wonder if your horses thought they had dandriff?

There's something so restful about watching hens, isn't there - even when they're asleep! I love to sit in the garden and watch mine scratch about, but because I can't see into their coop - unless I open the back and wake them up - I've never seen them asleep.

My husband says it must be a dose of man-flu! :D Can I come to visit Gloria too - sounds like just the weather to make me better!!

The weather is bad over here too, but no snow thankfully - you can keep that in Washington! Lots of rain and wind this morning. The girls are hiding at the back of the coop - having a shy day! Oh, just realised Milly is behind the water bottle - she just stood up!

No, Kate; if it were man-flu you'd be in bed moaning quietly. And then a bit louder in case nobody hears you. And then asking for a cuppa. And then perhaps a few biscuits. And if there's any of that ham left, a sarnie wouldn't go amiss... Kids get colds, men get flu, women get on with it, as they say...
    Feel better soon!

    Hi, all!

Kateb, hope you're feeling better and, of course, you're welcome to visit, too!
We're having another glorious day...clear, sunshine, cool, but lovely. I'm about to go over the wall to the arroyo to complete my job of pruning all the desert willow saplings...

One of the local roaming cats, Lucie (a male) was back again and I caught him rolling in my garden, flattening seedlings! Not to mention I suspect it's he who dug around and created a mound of dirt. On the other hand, it could be the rogue squirrel who may be burrowing under the wall, into the yard, then under the raised beds and up into the bok choy area! Before I put up the little wire frame barricade, squirrels were burrown DOWN from the top in that area!! COULD IT BE THEY"RE MOVING IN beneath my 3+ foot raised bed, through a layer of rocks and upside down sod then about 2.5 ft. of dirt ?????

OH well...one of the black hens is awake with a bright, beady eye...can't see Milly....My, it's sure raining hard now!!!!!

I didn't know squirrels could burrow!!

A friend sent me an excellent comedy sketch where a man tells his girlfriend he called for 'help' but she didn't come so he called the ambulance. They arrive and tell her to feed him, look after him, give him a bell to ring, etc., and when she says what about my cold? they berrate her for even mentioning it and say "you just don't understand do you". It was very funny - wish I'd kept it.

I had to phone Sky to fix my satellite and the guy on the phone thought I was a bloke! I must sound really rough!!! (BTW, never have Sky if you can have cable. Never had a problem with cable in lots of years, but it wasn't put in at this development so am stuck with rubbish Sky boxes that break down on a regular basis. Rubbish.)

Oh yes, this is the "about the girls" thread! They are asleep still - 2 black hens at the front, Milly not in sight. She's a clever one, bet she's got the warmest place!

    Keeper of the hens

A weekend of "interesting" weather - we got half way to a tennis tournament in Sheffield before they rung us and said it had been cancelled, then we watched Joe play (Go Cullingworth - although they lost 5-0) - in the torrential rain, wind and cold - the pitch was like a mud-bath!

Incidentally, did anyone hear my "audio blog" post this morning at about 8:15am? I wittered on about what was happening today and probably the weather and other interesting stuff(!), all in the hope that you guys would hear me (although I sound rough as I think I caught Kate's cold!)

Didn't catch the audio blog this AM, Neil....poor Cullingworth....what a hellish way to play...NFL players are sissies compared to soccer players...or fans, either! I sat through many a Cosmos game in Giants Stadium with horrible weather, while baseball games were cancelled! SISSIES!! Then the media would report that all sports were called off, which made me write nasty notes...sometimes they would report on the later broadcasts that the Cosmos had, indeed played! The media really hated soccer then and I think they still do!

Kateb, SKY? OOOH, that's Murdoch country! Yes, rock squirrels are ground squirrels...they can climb trees and walls, of course, but out here in the high desert, they live in the ground, not tree nests....

Much quieter now, two girls still snuggling...Where's Milly?

Neil, do yours ever get together and make what sounds like an alarm call - except they seem to do it for the hell of it? Sage & Onion do it for about 5 mins at a time and then flap and wander off. Are they normal, or do you know of a hen psychologist? They did it one summer when Eric was away - I let them wander round the house when he's not looking - and we were having Friday Ginnything, and laughing. And our laughter set them off. The more they did it the more we laughed, and so it went...I wonder what it's like to be normal?

I've had a couple of brief outages, but so far it's come back on in a matter of minutes. The wind is picking up again, and some of the big Fir trees are swaying around. I hope we don't have any more come down. The ground is so soggy, it's a possibility we could lose a couple more out back. The roads are getting flooded, so I sure hope my hubby can make it home from Seattle tonight. I'm glad we don't live closer to any of the rivers, they are all flooding.

Yes, the radio station actually made an emergency alert interruption to talk about the flooding in Snohomish and Skagit counties. Don't think I've ever heard one of those alerts before - just the system tests they do. We don't have any flooding issues on the island here (no rivers.) Just falling trees. Fingers crossed for your husband. Does he work there? THAT's a pretty good commute!

Gloria you were right! Winds were coming. And have indeed arrived. We've also had so much rain - its like all the big old (short rooted) firs are standing in sponges rather than soil. Then with the wind. Kinda scary.

Our hens however are all cozy and haven't moved since Gloria's report two hours ago.

Hubby arrived home about 20 minutes after I wrote that last post, Diane. West Seattle flooded..the Steel plant where he works sent everyone home and shut down because the whole plant flooded. People who worked there for over 40 years couldn't remember this ever happening before....Did I mention that I HATE WINTER? So far no trees have come down(crossing fingers that we make it thru the night).

Great - I'm glad to hear he's home! Why is it we call it *high winds* here and *hurricanes* elsewhere?

Yeah I do remember you mentioning SOMETHING about winter. lol.

A steel plant in Aberdeen lost its whole roof! I've lived around Seattle for 30+ years and I agree - every winter for the last 5 or so has seemed to meet a new level of extreme. So hubby is probably not going into work tomorrow then...?

We had 2 trees narrowly miss the house last winter. Feel very lucky and would still rather not have a tree come even close to my home or anyone else's.

Hi Lynn - we're both on watching the morning hen activities before our own bedtimes :)

Wow-this has been about the worst storm ever, eh? Couldn't believe it - I actually got a phone solicitation during it. While people are fleeing to shelters, and ducking tree limbs, and sitting in the dark with no heat; others are out there doing political fundraising... Saw that roofless steel plant again: Western Steel.

Ooops forgot my hen report - they are happy scratching around in their play area. All 3 on cam :)

I just saw a black and white cat walk behind the hen pen..the girls didn't seem to mind it being there.

Yep, it's been a horrible storm, Diane. I won't know how bad we got hit till I do chores in the morning, it was too dark to see after the last of the storm went thru. I think my hubby Don is going to try to make it to work tomorrow..he's a gluten for punishment. I came from Aberdeen and still have a few family members down there, but I haven't heard how they are doing. 2 people have been killed in this storm so far, let's hope there won't be more. I don't know what time the rivers are going to be cresting, but it's way over flood stage. We needed this storm, like a hole in the head. :-(

I hope it doesn't look too bad in the cold light of day - the weather is crazy everywhere lately, is it global warming or just coincidence? The flooding we had in England in the summer was the worst most people can remember, though with all the building on flood plains etc its not surprising really.

Neil, hope you're taking care of yourself. I took today off work too and have lounged around all day again coughing and snotting!

When Wazza has a busy day it makes me feel sad about all the licence penalty points people have gained!

The girls are scratching around and look like they're considering going to bed! P or T were halfway up the slope but came back down. They're taking it in turns to look into the camera - hi girls!

Here I am 15 minutes later looking at an empty play pen! They finally toddled on up to the sleep coop - I'm sure Tilly told them it was time for bed so they all followed! Can't decide if I keep hearing footsteps or if its the plastic blowing in the wind.

Off for a rest now - GOT to go into work tomorrow. Have to attend a disciplinary (not mine I hasten to add!) which I unwittingly wrote a statement for. It was just to cover my own back, and now they're using it to stab someone elses. Feel very grieved but to be fair the person concerned does need sorting out as they're causing loads of problems by not doing their job properly.

I've been surprised the past couple of days how early the girls head for the coop. They're sitting in their usual format - Milly a little 'hint' of white at the back, P and T guarding the front. They're taking it in turns to open their eyes and look like blinking lights!

Awww - I really hope you all feel better soon.

How's it look outside Lynn? I haven't ventured out yet. Although I can see that one of the favorite Elder Berry sitting places for the yard birds has fallen. The birds are all sitting on it any way. I'm more worried about what Seattle is going to look like when I go there Thursday. An area near where I work in Lake City was on the news for extensive flooding. I'll be interested to know how it goes for Don today...

Red! One day you were telling T or P how beautiful her orange neck feathers are. Right? I think I see them! Very very light feathers (in my black & white cam image) all around her neck & down her chest. Are those orange? Are they new? Milly is in her usual spot in the back and the other brown gal to the right. Don't hear any coughing so hopefully Neil is snuggled away in bed with a hot toddy (with honey in it.)

... and is it T or P with the orange neck feathers?! It means we'd have a rough idea which hen is which.

The only time we hear about bad weather in the states is when its in New York - or if a hurricane hits. I've always assumed that you're all used to it and your local authorities sort it out so's you're not inconvenienced. How wrong I was!

All the sick people in the UK are getting better, I hope. Neil and Kateb, take care.

Another gorgeous day here...sunny and near 70. I've spent the morning the garden in order for winter....in a few days it will get cold and cloudy again.
During January we get very cold nighttime temperatures as the desert cools down rapidly. But for now, it's time to enjoy the good weather. I wish I could send it over to you in the UK and ship it express to Seattle....

    Keeper of the hens

Hey Diane, Penny has always had orange on her throat and chest, but since her new feathers have grown in it looks really bright - it really is beautiful!I think i forgot how pretty they are when she was moulting. They're lovely, though, I'll have to see if i can get a pic :)

Kate, Penny is the chuck with the bright orange under her chin. She has a HUGE patch of orange, whereas Tilly only has a few small 'blobs' that may be difficult to spot on cam. Also, Tilly is a lot bigger than Penny, too, in height and width...although i don't know how easy that will be to see, either ;)

Girls are sleeping, as usual. Glad to see Penny is sleeping on the roost where she should be, Tilly and Milly are being naughty...

They must have heard you - they are all on the roost as of this moment. :) First time in a long time tho.

Gloria - I think it worked ! It was warm (well high 50's) and sunny today. Although some of it was fairly windy still. Thanks for those rays :)

Things are a little soggy around here, the horse pasture is flooded and we lost one of the big fir trees out in back, I couldn't let my chickens outside today even though the sun was out part of the day..they would have sunk in the mud.

Nucor Steel, where my Don works, will be out of commission for at least a month, while they try and fix all the water damage to the machinery. I guess by the time it's up and running again, he'll be retired. With 10 feet of water over the interstate, I guess I won't be getting my new ducks this week..you can't get here from Oregon at the moment. Maybe they will get here the first part of next week, if they can get I-5 opened. I have friends down there in Chehalis who have lost their whole farm under 10 feet of water, so I'm not going to fret about my 4 ducks. I just hope they will get here safely.

I see the hens are sleeping sweetly still, Milly is standing up, but not moving.

Mine is pretty much black and white too, but when they come close to the camera I can see the orangy bits! I don't see any difference in size on the cam, but can see the throats so from now on its Penny with the Patch and Tilly Totally black. (I know its not strictly true, but it should help me!)

I've missed the girls completely today and will have to wait til I get home and see how they're sleeping!

Haven't felt too bad today so I hope you get better soon Neil. I heard recently that if you have a tickly cough (doesn't work for a chesty one), when your throat "tickles" if you put your finger in your ear and wiggle it, it takes the tickle away. I tried it and it does work!! (and no, I don't know why!)

Wow wazhero - what an interesting look at a day in the life... Holy cow!

I hope your ducks are ok too Lynn. Does Don really retire in a month? If so, that seems like weirdly good timing! I heard the water on the freeway outside of Chehalis is 8 feet deep!! And if, when calculated properly - by measuring 12 hours each side of the peak in the storm - this is the most rain, for 'rainy Seattle' and surrounds, in recorded history. All 21 rivers flooded... I haven't driven onto the mainland yet (going there tomorrow) so I've got no idea what it looks like.

I can't see any hens at the moment. Are they upstairs sleeping?

Its good to know Wazza is out there keeping the streets safe, but I bet he's got himself a whole load of paperwork from a day of crimestopping. If only we could go back to the days where a PC could give kids a clip round the ear when they misbehave, and then they'd get another when their parents went to collect them instead of all the rubbish that goes on now.

Where are your ducks coming from Lynn? Wouldn't it've been quicker to get someone to set them off in the right direction on one of the rivers and they could've surfed their way to you!!! ;)

Well, glad the weather has cleared in Seattle....Sorry your yard is a mess, LynnW. Wazza seems to have a very hectic life. Just make sure you get enough rest in between shifts!
The two black gals are to the left hunkered down, while Milly has decided to grace us with an appearance. She is down, but I can see her eye and she's awake. Either P or T has been puffing up and doing an on stretch, never lifing her head out of her chest! First time I"ve seen that one!! OH, now I see, I"m looking at the rears of P and T, not the front! They've both just stood and kicked back their legs and now they are standing... I see the head on the right poking up now and both have resettled. Milly remains nonplussed.

Sunny today but a bit cooler. Took the dogs to the vet to get their nails clipped and the unmentionable done to their bums. Then, while my mother was in the library, we strolled around the adjacent park and the sat in the sun. Lovely...just wore my turtlneck and my sleeveless fleece vest...

Back for a last peek, and Milly is honoring me with a better view..she's out near the rear flower pot...Looking very lovely and now, she has emerged and is near the camera! And here comes T or P...I see lighter feathers down her front and is that a slightly lighter tinge on the wings? I guess that's Penny! And now Tilly is out, too! Oh, yes, the difference is clearly visible. Penny's front is like a huge bib of lighter feathers down her chest. I just heard the whine of a jet flying overhead....didn't disturb them at all. They are all pecking away, oblivious to the fact that I am watching them from about 5,000 +/- miles away!! Milly's tail feathers are front and center now... OH, dear, much flapping about and very alert...and now they've all run back into the rear hutch! MMM, is something prowling about???

Seems quieter now...MIlly tentatively standing just behind the little fencing behind the water bottle...

I've had a chickenless day; I opened up the coop in the pouring rain to let Sage & Onion out. Onion was crowing fit to bust...but no way was his beak going to encounter fresh air today, so he stayed in and serenaded Sage. Whether they came out at ALL today, I don't know, because I had to go and wind up joannas. And by the time I clocked on to Hencam, there were no chickens there either!

Yes, thanks Lynn (& Janice & Kate & CC) It looked like the same old beautiful green Seattle to me - except for some yellow danger tape up around a gas station and an apartment building and on one steep bank I had to drive disturbingly close to. And there were some minor landslides I passed by. But really most things looked entirely normal. Then again some of my clients had friends in flooded houses and people caught on the Portland side of the Big Flood in Chehalis. I feel very lucky and also sad for people who got caught in it all...

Just got home. I'm sleeeeepy. Kind of like some hens I know.

Oh Lynn. I'm thinking healing thoughts for your Mom. Are YOU ok?

Yes, my trip was safe. Probably the most dangerous thing was me craning my neck to try and see all the landscape on each side of the freeway as I raced along at 60+ mph...

Hi wazza. Hey I really like that name: Ladies of the American Sector (LAS - by the way) and then Ladies & Gentlemen of the United Kingdom (LGUK - oh...well)
How are you wazza? I'm really appreciating knowing a bit about what your job is like from the inside. It also increases my compassion for the public workers I run into during my day to day activities. Well, except ferry workers. Idiots... grrr. Clearly, I need a ferry worker to join hencam and talk about their job.

Hen Report: Its very windy in the coop at the moment. Even the sign is moving a little. Lights on, hens apparently upstairs snoozing.
