    Keeper of the hens

We spent six hours the other day adding an extension to Effie's cage...well today, as we were about to throw out the terribly designed Thickets cage from Pets At Home (that our degus came with) I thought why not put Effie in it?!

This cage is huuuuuuge! 92cm x 47cm x 60cm, with a DIY loft extension on top too. Man, and I thought Prim was a lucky Syrian in the Jenny Rat cage

Now we had to clean all the cage out and all the toys we wanted to use, so this took hours, and then it took almost as long getting it all set up to when I was happy with it...but it looks great now and watching Effort explore has been the best thing.

Here's the Thickets, with Effie's first wheel in it haha...the wheel is a 30cm wheel so it's HUGE!

     photo thickets12_zpskpxautfu.jpg

Whole cage - Effort's half way up to the right!

     photo thickets13_zps9ujsxtbj.jpg

I really wanted the loft to have the wheel in, I thought that would have looked so cool, but obviously we couldn't fit it through the door - ooops! :tooth:

     photo thickets6_zpsfogwppje.jpg

"Guys, I love this cage so much, seriously"

     photo thickets7_zpslebd2g1u.jpg

"So much room. So many toys!"

     photo thickets9_zps1ejlq70u.jpg

To give you an idea of the size of the cage, Effort is the same size as Prim (our adult male Syrian - females grow a lot bigger), and here she is on the wheel - it dwarfs her!

    "Hey, what's that smell?!"

     photo thickets11_zpsvxx6eomv.jpg

    "Fooood!"

She has already made it up to the loft several times too :)

    Keeper of the hens

Now the Thickets cage is really badly designed, in many ways...it is most definitely NOT worth £90!! But the worst is the single door. Although it's large, it is right on the right side of the cage. This makes cleaning the left side of the cage impossible, you just cannot reach it, and it's a real pain.

To try prevent this from being a problem I tried to keep most the levels and toys that would need cleaning to the right. The narrow middle level actually started on the far left (seriously, what a crummy design!!) but we managed to unscrew it and fasten it in the centre of the cage.

The rubbish access also means this isn't a good cage for scaredy animals that are in need of slow but consistent taming. Trying to catch them or encourage them to interact with you is impossible, because there are too many areas to avoid you haha. Whereas for animals that are young or were well cared for, this cage is perfect...Effie is proving to be confident and very easy to tame, so I foresee no problems
    :)

It's a veritable mansion - makes Beckingham Palace look pathetic. Posh & Becks will be on the blower any second...

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks both...this is by far the biggest cage we've ever had for a Syrian, it's so cool! It's a Chinchilla / Degu / rat cage so Effie is in heaven

Video of Ms Munchkin - the scary thing is the loft is the same measurement of the entire cage I kept my first pet hamster in, when I was thirteen years old.

This is the cage my first hammy lived in - this was considered large back then!! Isn't that scary?! Makes me wonder what cages will be like ten years from now...

    And more adorable piccies...

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks all  She's cute but has the typical Syrian brain (or lack of!) and will plop off everything and everything - makes for some fun handling sessions!!!

    Keeper of the hens

I moved Effie into another new cage *oops*

Now she's in the Mamble 100 hahaha! Easier access for handling and cleaning, and it's still huge - I can't complain! Here's the completed layout, I just want to add a homemade hammock above the green igloo on the left

     photo newcage11_zpslpwajhjc.jpg

She has an exercise corner with two vertical wheels and a flying saucer too...she loves her wheels
    :)
     photo newcage6_zpsxcqksft6.jpg

"Stop taking my photo whilst I'm exercising..."

     photo newcage8_zpsymsllrh5.jpg

She has plenty to keep her busy. The Mamble is 64cm tall so there's a slight risk of fall damage, but if you pack the cage out and add hammocks it shouldn't cause an issue in young hamsters...but y'know, hamsters aren't the most graceful animals :rolling:

    Keeper of the hens

She has a water bottle over a bowl now (SO SICK of bottles leaking!!) and has to stand on a platform to drink - she worked this out almost immediately

The white bars above Effie here actually swing as she climbs them

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks everyone!! She loves her new cage but by god do two of her wheels rattle...one of them is SOOO bad, we have to take it off in the evening when she wakes up :rolling: The silent spinner isn't as bad, but it's still...not silent haha!

CC she could well have been waiting for some celery crisp 'n' crunch haha, she loooves the stuff
