    Keeper of the hens

Yep, today is Kasper's 5th Gotcha Day!!

I can't believe it was five whole years ago that this furry lummox joined our family...I can remember parts of it like it was yesterday; shopping for my first ever dog bed, buying cheap but cheerful toys, fishing out the dog collar I'd bought years before and had held onto just waiting for the time when I got my first dog...

And all of a sudden there he was!

We were only twenty and twenty-one when we adopted Kasper, and we had no idea what an impact he would have on our lives...what an amazing dog he is!

Kasper was promised as being the dog of our dreams - he was actually described as "the perfect family dog"...HA! He might have been perfect for us, but he was difficult and fearful. We had to put YEARS of training into him, and I knew nothing about training dogs or shaping was all new, but we picked it up and we saw progress.

     photo best12.jpg

It's all thanks to Kasper I discovered my main passion in life was dog training

     photo dog8.jpg

The next few months after adopting him were a steep learning curve; as Kasper settled in he showed more of his true personality, and his list of fears grew and grew - he got over his fear of us but he was terrified of strangers, being left alone, having items taken from him (even if we weren't so much as looking at him), body handling, the vacuum, having a harness / collar put on etc etc. The list was endless! And then there was his lack of training...he was exhausting!

     photo chicken15.jpg

There were many, many days in the beginning where I cried in frustration because more and more issues were popping up, and I didn't think we'd ever get Kasper to the point where living with him would be anything but massively hard work.

Over the years we have had dozens of training successes...we've had several friends say that Kasper is "like a normal dog" because he's no longer scared of them, and whilst fearful dogs are also normal, it's still a wonderful compliment

     photo home18.jpg

We've had several huge set backs with Kasper over the years, and training has been anything but plain sailing...but when I look back to that dog we adopted, I barely recognise him these days. We're so lucky to have him in our lives.

Kasper now knows close to 40 tricks; he is generally well behaved, loving, and although he can be annoying he has come so far. He loves his walks and he is comfortable around strangers, calm with other dogs and most animals - sheep not included!!

He's a bit of a legend and, for all I gripe about him, life wouldn't be the same without him and I love him to bits :)

So, five awesome years with the Doodle Dog - here's to many more!

I'll post some pics of our Gotcha walk now...

    Keeper of the hens

Kasper's Gotcha Day started with cuddles in bed, because of course!

     photo gotcha_zpsupsgpgdr.jpg

We then headed out on a walk in the sun but...we forgot it was Good Friday and, with the sun being out as well, the world was teeming with off lead untrained dogs, screaming children, horses...and it was all a bit of a nightmare!

The walk started with a cyclist racing around a blind corner and almost hitting Kasper (I thought she had, because when she slammed on her breaks screamed - I was furious!!) and then right after a mum too busy to pay attention to her three or four year old child walked past us, and let her kid brush right up against Kasper - thankfully he didn't freak out, even though she was at face-height and staring at him Kasper kept focus on me and did SO WELL

So what we planned to be a 2+ hour walk only lasted an hour as we came back early after enjoying ourselves, but we still had a great time (:

     photo gotcha3_zpsbyowdhss.jpg
Someone was definitely enjoying himself! :heartsabove:

     photo gotcha1_zpssxyp01zj.jpg

He was very patient when we stopped to do things, and was happy to wait

     photo gotcha7_zpsupkjm9hi.jpg
We had lots of opportunities to use the new bowl and fold-up water bottle he got for his Gotcha :)

     photo gotcha5_zpsvm9cxe2q.jpg

     photo gotcha12_zpsggszmoxe.jpg

The beach was blessedly empty so we didn't have to worry about kids / dogs

     photo gotcha4_zps4m2dc8il.jpg

    And the weather was perfect!

     photo gotcha8_zps8jgymlbc.jpg

The bobbly shore looked really cool and Kasper loved exploring the bumps!

    Keeper of the hens

Kasper had an awesome walk; lots of paddling, splashing, rolling on the grass, exploring, leaping over chasms, and training - most his favourite activities!!

    Keeper of the hens

Unfortunately Amazon Prime messed up delivery AGAIN (what was supposed to be next-day delivery won't arrive for a week...) so most Kasper's gifts aren't here yet :(

He did get a Tux toy, which he is currently playing with for the first time, but he has some treats on the way, and then we ordered him a new bed and Kong toy from Zooplus after cancelling the amazon order...

I'll post a video from the walk, and pics of him enjoying his Gotcha toys later

Happy Gotcha, you lot; you've done absolute wonders with him and he's given you such love in return. Match made in heaven!:face-smile:
Red, if Amazon Prime cock up I believe you get free delivery or something next go - check it in their terms.

Happy Gotcha day!! You can have a week long gotcha, just like CC has a week (and more!) long birthday!

I think Kasper was perfect for you - it has given you something to concentrate on, focus on, and means you have to get out of bed each day and carry on. Symbiotic relationship I believe! It's been a great 5 years - he's lucky you found him. xx

Happy Gotcha Day to darling Kasper! Just doesn't seem like it's been 5 years already. I think he has been a wonderful dog for you two and it's been great for him also, he couldn't have found better parents.

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks guys :) We can't believe it's been five years either...he still acts like a crazy 9 month old haha!

CC, 50% of Amazon's Prime deliveries haven't arrived on time - so much for guaranteed next day delivery!!! One of them is taking almost two weeks to arrive! Lyle phoned them and complained, and the person on the other end gave us two months free Prime and also said she would contact her manager to see why it's happening...
Anyway, Kasper's gifts arrived, and he loved them all :)

He got a Kong Traxx toy, which is a very well designed toy - both a tug / chew toy and a puzzle feeder. Kasper LOVED it, it took around 20 minutes to empty (unfrozen) and even though he really went at it he couldn't do any damage at all

     photo gotcha10_zps6gihunmj.jpg

He enjoyed this so much, I'm really glad we got it!

     photo newbed3_zpsvy8mdxmq.jpg

As well as that he got a new memory foam dog bed, which you can also see here!

     photo newbed2_zpsarkvgg0j.jpg

"Mum, I wish it was my Gotcha Day EVERY day!"

     photo newbed1_zpse8he8ufw.jpg

    "*rawr* I can't kill it!"

     photo newbed4_zpshh5w78nj.jpg

And he got to play tug

     photo gotcha1_zpsh79qtsyr.jpg

And try his Tux, which was better than we thought it was going to be (I was a little disappointed when it arrived)

     photo GOTCHA_zpsly5ni0sx.jpg

"Dad, are you filling my Tux again?!"

     photo gotcha3_zpsmkqjymuq.jpg

He had a really good day, we all did (:

Oh, and Raiden likes the bed too ;)

I'd like to clarify that my dad hasn't paid £80 for us to have Amazon Prime, he paid £80 for himself to have Amazon Prime and as a free bonus he can extend the Prime to a family member, which is me ;)

I think you mean generously shared the benefits with me haha! :)

Is your weather as crazy as ours today? We've had wind, rain, sleet, hail, full on snow (ground too wet for it to lay though) and now it's sunny and warm... I think someone's having a laugh somewhere...

We had a lovely day yesterday went to Scarborough and played on the beach with Mallory then had a lovely walk to the harbour to see all the boats it started to get cold so Mal and GN had their ice cream in Phoebe just as well as a sudden thunderstorm hit and the beach turned white with hail stones, I fair came down. Worst thing was I had some Doritoes as I can not have icecream and Mallory was dipping them into her icecream and eating them Weird kid she is so fussy about food and then eats that combination. I bet if I had wanted he to do that she would have been mighty indignant about it.
