    Keeper of the hens

We don't know how long Enzo will be with us, so it's important we spoil and enjoy him while he's here!

I take a dozen photos a day because, if Milly taught me anything, it's that you'll regret not taking a million photos when you lose such a special pet. I'm not making that mistake again.

This thread will get bogged down with photos, so don't bother looking if you don't want to...but it'll be great to look back on at a later time
    :)

    Keeper of the hens

He just *loves* typing out messages to everyone, he could write his own book...I mean it wouldn't make any sense, but he'd sure love writing it :sarcastic:
I have some exciting news

We phoned up the vets today to see if we could go visit Pecan (as they said we could) and they said they were actually going to phone us later today because they got the dates wrong, and Pecan is a week older than they thought - this means he can come home this Friday!!!
    :woohoo: :heartsabove:

So not only are we going to see him today, but he's coming home at the end of this week!

Enzo had me worried last night as we slept all night without him coming downstairs or scampering all over us...he was fine though, apparently he'd just exhausted himself with the previous nights' activities!! He's been awake all day today which has been fun, I missed playing with him although it is cute just having him sleep next to me all day haha

I was going to edit and upload some photos, but I'll wait until I have Pecan pics too and post them all together...oh, Pecan's tag arrived today too!

After about 90 minutes we put Enzo outside the room with a barrier across the door (so he could still see in) as he was jumping on Pecan's back and all Pecan wanted was to play. Pecan then got to have a proper uninterrupted explore; he loves the climbing wall and OMB IS HE A CUDDLER!!

Pecan went to sleep in Enzo's green rabbit igloo, and Enzo came in and went to sleep on the tall cat tree. No doubt mayhem will resume when they wake up!

Enzo is keen to play with him, and as Pecan is littler (and the incoming cat) he will want to exert some dominance which is a good thing as long as it doesn't get too rough. Hissing, spitting, all normal. They're both young so will have a great time with each other. Mixing scents is a good thing so him sleeping in Enzo's bed will be perfect for that! You are very lucky to have two cuddly cats - can I have one?!!!

    Keeper of the hens

    I hope so Lynn! :)

Kate yeah Enzo is being the pain, Pecan is being a true gent and ignoring Enzo other than to join in play with moving toys. Enzo is following Pecan, jumping on him, and doing the occasional hiss and growl. I can't even distract him with flapping toys :tooth: Pecan seems to be very much used to cats - not only did he have his mother and siblings, but there were two surgery cats and cats that came in for ops and such, so it makes sense he's so blase!

CC, still not a cat person ;) They just don't sucker me in like dogs, or other pets. I LOVE *my* cats, I adore them, even Pecan already...but I have little interest in cats I see on the street :P

I think for now we are bringing Pecan downstairs with us and that will become 'his' room when we are not there to supervise. Enzo will be in his cat room (with a barrier so they can still see each other). We'll pop Pecan in the top crate every now and then too, which is in Enzo's room, for scent exchange. They can meet several times a day, especially when they're being fed, but I'm planning on slower intro's. I've read so much about cats doing better with s-l-o-w intro's - what does anyone think?

Cats are usually quite quick to intro - the following, pouncing, tussling etc will happen even with a slow intro because it's just the way cats are! Enzo needs to exert his dominance and Pecan will be laid back about it because he's been exposed to several other cats. Once they've exhausted all the contacts they'll calm down, and then do it again the next day and the next etc until they're bored of it! You have to use your own discretion though and do whatever you feel is right. You know them better than us so go with intuition!

    Keeper of the hens

Day 3 of Enzo and Pecan today, they are really starting to enjoy each other :)

Enzo is doing much better at disengaging when he gets a bit much with Pecan, and Pecan is pawing and pouncing back. They enjoy playing together, happily eat together, and love chasing each other - favourite game is sprinting through the cat room, out onto the landing to do a lap, then charging back into the cat room!!

They were together three hours today no issues, I separated Enzo twice to calm him in that entire time.

    Keeper of the hens

And yesterday after the kite festival we popped in 'just to look' at some rabbits in a pet shop (ie. I was hoping to fall in love, Lyle just wanted us to look!!) and WE BOTH FELL IN LOVE!!!

Tristan is a young male rabbit, the pet shop took him in after Tristan's breeder couldn't sell the males fast enough so gave Trist and his two brothers to the pet shop. The shop owner is a passionate animal lover, and very rescue-friendly...he currently has a stray cat with kittens living in the back of his shop, and travels to feed them every night at midnight!!

    Anyway, Tristan:

    :heartsabove:

     photo tristan2_zpsiecmdll0.jpg

Tristan has been home two days, and he is AMAZING. He's wonderful! I missed having a confident rabbit (Omri is very independent and still very shy and skittish), Tristan is PERFECT!

     photo friends_zpsyrl9tvzg.jpg

No idea what breeds he is, but isn't he beautiful?

     photo friends_zpsyrl9tvzg.jpg

     photo friends1_zps6eaua5jz.jpg

I introduced Pecan and Tristan straight away, an hour after Tristan came home, as they were both so happy and confident...Pecan's second day home, Tristan's first, and look at 'em!

CC his colouring is right for a Cinnamon, but his body shape doesn't quite fit, and his brother looked very different - BUT, we think we've found at least half of what he's mixed with!

My mum looked through every rabbit breed after seeing photos of Tristan, and said he looked like an English Spot. I google imaged the breed, and it looked exactly like Tristan's brother!! Not only that but the body of the English Spot looks very much like Tristan, in terms of shape, tail length, ears, head etc. What do you think?

Today the boy-cats have been together all day. No interruption needed from me; they've played, eaten, and slept together
    :)

I would say kitten intros are done and dusted. It's proven that there are better long term bonds with unrelated kittens. It's not uncommon for siblings to decide they don't like each other at about 18 months old. Not always true of course, just a generalisation.

I'm sure you'll have thought of this already, but be careful with the kitten:rabbit intros as a rabbit kick can kill a young kitten if it lands in a certain way. Tristan looks lovely though - is he as gentle as he looks? Think you're spot on with the breed-must have something else in him for the colour.

    Keeper of the hens

That's good to know Kate as I read a lot about littermates being great together but intro'ing kittens can be a long and arduous task...yet day 5 and they're together 24/7 now!!

They play together, explore together, eat together (Pecan insists they eat out the same bowl and Enzo tolerates it very well now :rolling: ) and even sleep together. Lyle went up to the loo in the middle of the night last night and they were snuggled together asleep on the landing, Enzo with his head on Pecan's back!!
    :heartsabove:

Yeah I did read a few cat rescues wouldn't rehome kittens to houses with house rabbits, but most people seemed to say it's not a worry and they've never had any problems. We let Pecan see Tristan first because Pecan's calmer but more confident, then yesterday we had all three bundles of fun together for several hours. Tristan was very happy to join in the fun, but also had no worries at all when the boys sprinted past or rough and tumbled next to him - it was so cute!

     photo fwends3_zpss9psli9n.jpg

Enzo's "seriously Pecan, who IS that?!" face :rolling:

With rabbits it's just a case of being cautious - if he's not a kicking bunny generally then he's unlikely to kick at them. I didn't realise that they're all similar size too! That could be a really great friendship for them. A lot of kittens like to share bowls - we have some really big ones at rehoming that we use for the litters, but when they get bigger they will probably choose to eat individually but always next to each other. I'm so glad they've bonded so well!

I don't think so Lynn, I think she just passed before her time :( We'll never know the chins age for sure seeing as they were adopted, but they were 7.5-8 years when we adopted them, and the guy seemed really lovely so I doubt they'd be significantly older than that.

    Keeper of the hens

It amuses me greatly how different the boys are.

Pecan is everybody's friend and will try interact with everybody - Chilli, Tristan, Pixie, humans, anyone! He bounces about and investigates and is full of energy and happiness. His favourite thing to do is chase flies - oh, and he is a PIG! :tooth:

     photo catintro4_zpschnds0q3.jpg

    Pecan fly catching:

     photo catintro15_zpsuuzq0grb.jpg

Enzo is much more reserved. He doesn't want to make friends with other humans or other animals, but the people he does love he adores. He is very calm, quiet, and loves to just lounge about and get fuss. He LOVES to climb, he's not much of an eater, and his favourite thing is watching - watching the world go by and watching the smaller rodents.

I wonder if Pecan had more varied interactions in his young life, or if it really is just personality. Is Enzo pure Bengal or mixed? Either way he displays more typical Bengal behaviour, being aloof but intense - they are usually considered to be more dog like - do you think that's true/fair?

I adore tabbies - they are my favourite - but I think Enzo is amazing and wonderfully hansome.

    Keeper of the hens

Pecan definitely had a much better start socialisation-wise than Enzo, by a lot. Pecan was used to other cats, a variety of staff, he heard dogs barking all day and several came into the room where he lived. He had families visiting him and his littermates, so yes, a lot of fun socialisation! Enzo on the other hand got very very little because his mother was so timid, and was kept in a back room.

He's not aloof with new people (as in walking around but ignoring them) he's actually very scared. Often he wants to come and see them, but he's too scared - you can see he is interested and wants to investigate, but is too scared. If they ignore him (and we have a hard time getting them to do that!) he will walk past them, over them etc eventually, and I'm sure given more time he'd enjoy fuss from them...but he's just a nervy little dude

Enzo is a Bengal cross who knows what. Um...hmm, dog like...I'm not sure. He LOVES cuddles and fuss (possibly even more than Pecan) but he is much calmer with it, in that he will saunter over for fuss, stand and purr, possibly lie next to you and sleep etc.

Pecan is much more demanding - walking over SCREAMING that he is desperate for fuss, butting against you, walking around your hand in circles being vocal etc. He won't stay still and is soon off to do something fun, but will be back demanding fuss.

Funny as we thought Enzo would be the vocal one, being part Bengal

We spoke with our vet today to ask about neutering, considering Enzo's condition. She said to wait until he's 9 months old, and Pecan can be neutered at the same time so they can be together. Sounds like a plan!

Also Pecan has different fur to Enzo, it's longer and fluffier, it feels lighter. I know cat breeds have different fur types just like dog breeds, but I'm more curious about the length of Pecan's fur. Some of his litter-mates had long hair (mum was short hair) do you think Pecan's hair might grow a little as he ages? Does he look like a 'standard' short hair kitten?
I'll try take more decent photos with my camera to try show the difference between their fur :)

The pictures I've seen so far he looks a pretty standard short hair, but then I have 6 short hairs and they all have different fur. Meow Meow is black and white - smooth, shiny and glossy. Ting Tong also black and white - a bit more white on him but his fur is duller but softer. My two tabbies are also different - Tabby's fur is really soft and her hairs are tipped (she's very ginger/blonde underneath), whereas Jenson (who, by the way, Pecan is a dead ringer for!) has longer hairs but they're still smooth, and his white fur is amazingly soft.
Cat fur - even short hairs - is much longer than people imagine. Semi-longhairs have a sort of 'soft focus' look about them. If I can find a picture of Jenson when he first arrived I'll post it.

He's about 9 months or slightly older and it's not a very good pic, but you can see the softness around his 'edge'. That's gone now. His back is very dark which Pecan's appears to be too?

How lovely to see a picture of Jenson Kate He is a very fine looking cat did you name him after Jenson Button by any chance ? I love tabbies. We have one living in our street and its fur loks almost halo like. It runs a mile if it sees you coming so dont know how soft the fur is. Ginnie came for a visit yesterday hungry as a hunter, He wolfed down two lots of biscuits. He is as fat as a butter ball and seems to still have his winter coat. We havdnt seen him for a few weeks but thats Ginnie comes and goes as he pleases always has and always will !!!!

Enzo's fur is heavy, smooth, and sits close to his body. Pecan's is light, fluffy, longer and stands up like he's being electrocuted hahaha! I tried to get some pics today but apparently it's impossible to capture :/

Aw yeah, Jenson looks a lot like Pecan's mum! :D And yes Pecan has a very dark back. Enzo's never met Rey or Kasper - Rey's a chaser, Kasper's a killer...neither would go down so well :rolling:

In the picture where Enzo is in mid-air, the light brown fur on Pecan's shoulders/base of skull looks like a moth's wings! Enzo's black and white portrait is fantastic!

Yes NN, he was named after Jenson Button - he was so fast when he was a kitten, and I only took him in temporarily (he was on the list to go to rehoming) so wanted to give him a good name so's he'd be attractive to potential homers. But then I fell in love and couldn't let him go! He's a proper dumpling now (Tubs!) and more barrel than sleek cat!

And I took some photos comparing their rib placement today. Here you can see Enzo's ribs, right up by his front legs:

     photo catdogfood7_zpsddlicp5d.jpg

Pecan's are much lower, and a very different shape too - Enzo's ribs fold in on themselves so don't meet in the middle, which means a lot of his insides are left exposed.

I'm looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops (sort of a social feline experiment) as I've been told non related kittens have a better relationship than related (generalisation). I still think a lot of it is down to individual personality, but who knows!

They could fit together very well even as adults, as they're both so different. Enzo is more demanding and "you must do what I say when I say!", but it works because Pecan is so chilled.

Omb we are having such a nightmare with food at the moment!! The cats would both rather eat the dog food (although lets be honest Pecan will eat anything) and Pixie wants the cat food, aagh! Wrong bowls guys, wrong bowl!!

The kitty boys got to see Tristan for the first time since Pixie came home a few days ago, and they were so happy!!

They are fab! The wooden shelves always look very chic, but they're not very safe for cats - they can't grip them when they jump on. The one that looks like a real tree is the best, but I love the green covered shelves too. Tabby would love them. Share any ideas for home made toys!

The current lot hear hubby get the frying pan out when he's having curry and line up for raw chicken. I only let him give them a bit - it makes their breath smell. (Mind you, Kitten's breath is awful - I think she must have a bad tooth or something in there, but dread trying to get her to the vet).

Oh Kate what a nightmare! I was reading on a raw site the other day how to s-l-o-w-l-y introduce fussy cats to new food types, I can try digit up if you want? I think most of it was obvious (ie. tiny bit of new food with old food mixed in) but think there were some things I wouldn't have thought of too. We've been feeding satin balls to Rey and Kasper to fatten them up a bit (Kasper especially after he lost a lot of weight when he had runny poops and turned out he'd eaten a sock on a walk in the dark!!! Rey just because he's energetic and refuses to eat much grub) and one of the ingredients is cheerios. We tried Pixie on a mini satin ball mix today as she is in the process of losing weight but is just starting to relish trying new foods, and omb she hated the cheerios!! Lyle forgot and mixed some in with her evening meal of wet food, she picked off all the wet food, licked the plate and then grudgingly ate the cheerios :rolling:

They have different varieties of Felix, I offer alternative brands when I think they haven't eaten sufficiently for a while, and they have dry food down at all times which they will all eat when they're hungry. I don't let the cats see what you post as they'd be packing up their cat toys and moving "oop north" for a more pampered life!! :rolling:

    Keeper of the hens

:rolling: :tooth: It's my birthday next month so I'm asking for two cat trees for my birthday. The boys looooove cat trees and it's great to watch, so I want to fill the house with them bwahahah.

This one I'm almost definitely getting:

Cool thing about this is that you can keep buying pieces and adding to whatever you already have. You can create whatever you want with it

I don't know which of the other two.

This one is surprisingly huge, and I like that it's not just vertical, but I love the one above too!

Here are some photos of it with adult cats on...

There are no cat trees in the 'kitty room' atm, so I want to move the two smaller ones (about 120cm tall) upstairs and keep the taller one down here and add my birthday trees too haha! Our house is tiny so it's gonne be like a cat tree jungle :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

I've always wanted one of the floor to ceiling ones but hubby won't let me. So hard to choose between the other two, but think I like the second one (Top Seller).

I hope not CC I don't think we'll fit in there either :P

I think I'm only going to get the modular one now, because I've found something else I really want to ask for birthday-wise too...actually I've found a few things I'm considering, and one's actually for me and not the pets!! :rolling:

Here are some photos of the boys loving their 'cat city' though

And I made the old chin cage into a cat tower too

They can access the very top too!

You should have a career in pet enrichment!
It will be a change to see you ask for something for yourself for your birthday - it's always for the pets. I know that makes you really happy, but it doesn't hurt to have something yourself once in a while. Xx

I would love a career in pet enrichment :rolling: I seem to have a lot of ideas most pet owners wouldn't think of, and I really enjoy setting up cages, layouts, enrichment activities etc.

Haha yeah, most my gifts are for my pets through me  It's nice to spoil with them things I couldn't afford otherwise, but it will be nice to get something for me too ^__^

Cats have four main rolls when their slaves are playing cards:

    1. Refereeing
    2. Providing a soft surface, with added buckaroo tension
    3. Helping pick cards (Pecan is hilarious at this)#
    4. Sitting on the cards and ensuring owners remember to take breaks

Both very sweet and lovely in their own way...Enzo's a lovebug when he wants to be, and I also like that he's easier to get along with as he's not so demanding. He will also just come and plop next to me as I'm doing whatever I'm doing, which is adorable! But Pecan's brilliant because he's just so damn funny, and you can do almost anything to him and he doesn't care

How the cats have been these past few days I'm definitely not a cat person - anybody want two moronic cats, free to any home?! :P
