    Keeper of the hens

Photos from Bandoose's last adventure before we took her to be PTS :(

    Bless her

We brought her dust bath down for one last roll. She was really excited to see it and loved flopping about, but didn't have the strength to do proper barrel rolls

Still really enjoyed it though :)

We're both worrying about Chilli being on her own

I don't think I offered my sympathies for the loss of Bandoose, and have missed what happened. It looks like she really enjoyed that sand bath, and I'm so sorry for yet more sadness in your life. I hope you are always comforted by the knowledge you've done as much as you can for them. Quality of life is so important.

Do they bond for life? I'm just wondering if there is a network out there that could either offer a new friend for Chilli or alternatively take him on so that he has company. I know they are very social animals, but if age was a factor with Bandoose could that mean Chilli is also nearing a natural end?

    Keeper of the hens

Thank you Kate. We're not really sure what was wrong with her, she literally became very ill overnight. The vets said they could do tests for cancer and such, but we didn't want that...she was unsteady on her feet and couldn't even dust bathe, and we didn't want her to suffer. The sand bath was extremely sad and had us both crying, as she was so happy and dived right in but couldn't manage the roll...I tried to help put sand on her but don't think I did it right!! Aw, bless her...

From what I've read Chinchillas are pretty hard to intro to each other, but it can be done. Females are harder and if they fight can kill the other chin quickly which is concerning. I follow a very responsible chinchilla breeder and she tends to keep her chins separate as getting them to get along can sometimes be quite tricky, and obviously as her chins are so tame they get a lot of that interaction from her. Chilli isn't getting that atm though :(

I'm concerned because chins can live from 10 - 20 years (20 is pushing it, but it has been known) and the thought of Chilli (who's about 8? 9?) living a decade alone is awful, but she's extremely territorial and although never fought with her sister, she was NOT friendly to others in the way that Bandy was

Thanks Lynn. Chilli is doing okay, but she doesn't want to come out since losing her sister :( She got A LOT of her confidence from Bandoose, and with the confusion of losing her sister she seems to have lost a lot of confidence with us too.

She's loving her treats and new chew toys, but I feel so sorry for her.

It's very sad that she's alone now - sorry I assumed she was a 'he'. I was talking to someone who had a pair that were almost 20 - it is amazing how small animals like them can live so long but a rat can only manage 2 years! It is a long time to live alone but when intros are so hard there's not much choice unless someone is willing to take her and give it a go. She's probably grieving still - maybe she'll become more sociable once she's worked her way through that and looks to you for company.

Can they live with any other animals? Can't say I've heard of it, but I don't know anything about chins.
