Wendy, your hens and their eggs sound really sweet. I wonder if the how to post photos thread is deeply buried - I think I'll go look for it and then come back here... Just a sec.

    Found it!

    UPDATED PHOTOBUCKET *HOW TO*

First, copy and paste the following instructions into a Word Document on your computer, so that you can refer to them during the process of uploading a photo from you computer into the forum. (You need to have the photos stored on your computer to do this. Either with a digital camera or by making a CD at the photo store and then using that to save them in a directory.)

    Next, go to:

    http://photobucket.com/
    • Follow the instructions there to: Setup a (free) account
    • Then, click on ‘Upload photos & video’ (or you can choose ‘My Album’)
    • Look for a blue box with white letters saying: “Choose Files”
    • BEFORE clicking on that – go to the box below which says: “Reduce to” followed by some numbers inside a box. Select the little gray arrow.
    • Then click on “320 x 240 (medium)” This will make the photo a good size for the forum.
    • NOW click on the “Choose Files” box. This will take you to your computer’s photo collection.
    • Double click on the photo you want (from your computer photo file.) This will tell Photobucket which pictures you want to store there. It will not place them in the forum (or anywhere but Photobucket) until you want to do that.
    • If you want to upload more than one photo, hold down your CTRL key as you click on the photos that you want to upload.
    • Once you have your pictures selected, press ‘Open’ (or it might say ‘Upload’) and wait.
    • Once uploaded, arrow down to the bottom of the page and click: ‘save and continue’ (blue box with white letters.)
    • Now the photo is stored in Photobucket. When you want to post a photo in the forum or elsewhere, follow the next steps:
    • Move your cursor to the ‘HTML Code’ box. Left mouse click inside the yellow box that begins with:

Hi all i've just decided to keep chickens and will be getting two tomorrow, that assuming i manage to finish the chicken coop which i might add for a noivice like me i have decided to go for quite a complicated design. I designed it myself and this will be my first attepmt at this sort of diy. Anyhow anybody who has some usefull tips to pass on to me would be great. My son is really looking forward to getting chickens.

    Keeper of the hens

    Hi and welcome fowl play!

The only thing I would suggest is that 3 is a much nicer number than 2 :) It means also that whilst a hen is away laying, the other won't be left alone... Something that our scaredy Penny hen appreciates!

We'd love to see pics of your coop when it's complete, in fact if you documented the building from start to finish or have the plans to hand, they would be of huge help to others looking to build their own too...

Have fun with your new hens, I'm sure you'll get lots of enjoyment from them!

Hi fowl play - that's an excellent choice for a name! Lots of folks on here recently acquired hens and others are very experienced. So you've got a good group to consult with.

I would love to see pics as well!

She has written about being kidnapped by three hens and she had to live on chicken feed (Oh, and custardy cake leftovers after bonfire night).
She was rescued by a large chappie with a rotating blue light on his head, who had also been absent as he was "On the case".

Hello everyone. I found the Hencam one night last week and it’s been past the hens’ bedtime every time I’ve remembered it since. Today I finally remembered to see what they do when they’re awake! (I watch my neighbours’ chickens through the fence every day though, so it’s not as if there’s been a shortage of other-people’s-chickens viewing in my life...)

It's good to have another 'chicken spy' around! Because i'm at uni now i only get to see my chucks once every few months, so instead i have been walking up to campus through the back of Keele, where i've found a garden containing chickens! Great excitement, especially as the chickens seem to be getting used to me now!

The new lights are very bright so I hope the hens are in bed by 4pm tonight or they might be tempted to stay up past their bed-times!

I was also looking for a thermometer for the coop (you know the dial-type ones) so you could see the temp in the coop (after a great suggestion from Ron), but the garden centre didn't sell them - only digital ones!

I'll widen the search to garden centres further away...

HEllo every one! I am Frogdust. I am from San Antonio Texas.I have been lurking around the hencam site for about 3 monthes and i decided to finaly join. I have 4 silkies as of now. they were all found birds. what i mean by this is the 2 older ones were brought to me by the local kids in the area. They brought them to me as i am know by the them as the nieghborhood stay at home mom. they bring me all the stray creaturs and the hurt ones too.then one evening my som was walking the dog and heard some strang noises under the bridge he was on , he went down under and found 4 babychikens in a deep hole filledwith anbout 2 inches of very cold water. 2 of the 4 were allready dead. so he buried them and put the surviving 2 in his coat pockets.he ran home and gave them to me. i put them in a crate with a heating pad draped over a tall water glass. i did not know what they were all i knew was thatthey were some kind of poultry. i really did not think they would survive to the next moring. Imadgine my surprise when i opend the crate and found two muddy but alive grey silikie chicks. I watered, fed and washed them.
That was 2 monthes ago .Since then I have watched as they molted off thier baby fuzz and now have grown in thier adult coats. they have been staying in the house with me as the weather has been too bitter for them to be out side with out thier mother to take care of them. the two pullets I have out side do not whant any thing to do with them. they are not agressive to them but will not let them in the coop at night. we have a coyotey problem out here . you do not leave you cats , small dogs or chickens out at night. You will find them gone or half eaten in the morning.
I have wormed them and i have gotten them water soluble vitamins. unfortunatly the vitamins come in a packat that treats 150 gallons or 1 ton of chiken feed. so I put a tiney pinch in thier water! WOW! they have grown to more than 6 times the size they were ! all most as big as the older birds out side . oh yes the out door chickens get the vitamins too. so there is our story . I grew up with chickens at my gradmothers ranch in New Mexico , but like a lot of kids I never paid too much attention to them other than to illicetly chase them when no one was watching ! I have since mended my wicked ways . I hope that some one will see this post and get a chuckel .

Lovely story you told there, I'm sure Neil will be including it in the "Hencam Book" - when/if it happens.

Hello Frogdust. Looking at the thermometer in the hen hut it is about -3? that is chilly. It is so foggy up here in the hills that I am sitting 30 feet from the lakeside and cannot see the water!

    Keeper of the hens

Welcome Frogdust, and thanks for the excellent introduction, it's nice to know a bit about the people here it makes our small community feel even closer :)

It was bitterly cold this morning, as shown by the thermometer and the ice on the car on my way into work... The hens don't seem too bothered at the moment though thankfully.

And well done on rescuing those lucky chicks, I hope they repay your kindness with lots of eggs in the future!

Welcome Frogdust! Your story was great!

Did you ever see the Disney movie 'Tomisina?' What you do for animals reminded me of that.

And we are always glad to have another American on here. (Lynn and I both live in Washington State - although we've never met in person. Coincidentally, she owes me a silkie. lol)

I'm in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA and I love the UK. I've been there twice and have friends there. My son, who was once in the Air Force, and stationed there married an English girl. That didn't work out but I am still friends with her parents. It's nice to talk to you all.

hello every one! And a big hello for luvhens!
I spent 6 years in fayettville n.c I loved liveing there. Oh my ..........Thank you every one for the sweet welcome. all the little smileys waving are so very cute. Awww thank you so much.
Some one asked me about my name . well it was given to me by my granny. I was the last of about 20 grand children .When i was 4or5 days old my parents came back from germany. they were able to get home a day earlier than planed. so as a joke they wrapped me up and put me in a box and put me on the porchand rang the door bell and ran around the corner of the house. well you can well guess as to the reation my granny had !she had a fit and so did her guest that was there at the time . granny tok me in the house and was going to call the cops .the two old women were so excited that my parents fell out of the hedges at the side of the house. they were laughing so hard they could not stand up. so to make a long story short, My parents asked for me back and my granny said that i was hers fair and square . she told them she was too old to raise a baby on her own so she was lending me back to them. Frog dust was her pet name for me. i usualy got called it when i was being naughty or mischevious. so i use it in memory of her.
a up date on the babys . They both had to be bathed as they got apple sauce in thier feathers and in thier feet feathers too. it dried to a nice set of armor plateing ! they both growled and chirred angrely at me as i shampooed them. wonder of wonders they both loved the blow dryer !little pixie streached out her wings so the warm air would get under them. silly creatchers.
i will go now as the fire work are blazing away and my son is calling me to come and watch.
    Happy new year!

What lovely little chickens you have, Frogdust! Have they tried flying? They sound like they might like it if they enjoyed the dryer air!
And what naughty parents you have giving your granny such a fright. Hee hee!

Victoria- yes they are such sweet little things.
to day it was warm and i put them out with the older birds ...........that did not go too good . Cisco the cockerel chased the little chick , Blue boy all over the yard and then in to the house were I was. naughty! the baby ran up on my foot and sat there. I finaly caught cisco and put him in the coop for a few hours so every one could have some peace. I am not shure what to do about him the hen , Cotton gets along with the babys just fine . she shepards them all around the yard . I am positive that if poor little Blue could have flowen I am shure he would have to day ! MY hubby think i am a bit crackers for playing with the chickens all day but they seem to enjoy it as much as i do . he laughed when i blow dryed the chicks after thier bath. he even laughed more when he saw them dry ! he said " who blew the babys up! POOF!" he is a wonderful man and very tolerantof the pet as he came from a family who did not like animals unless they were on the dinner plate! City boy !
As for my parents ............ my dad was a city boy marreyed to a ranchers daughter. Daddy was alowed pet as a boy and he loved birds of all kind so as a little girl we had budgies and fish and chickens. daddy was very tender hearted when it came to his chickens. mom was a bit more practical about then as she had to clean up and feed about 100 hens every day . she told me it was alot of chiken poop to clean up every day. she learned to not like them too much.
I diverdge from what i meant to say LOL!
yes my parents were and are very mischevios!
i am luckey to have two great people for my parents.

Luv hens - oh how cute ! the danceing hens are too cute ! a little cloud would do for the dust part.
I think my granny got the dust part from when i was small my mother would dust me with baby powder and some time when you would pick me up i would go poof! and baby powder would make a cloud around me . a case of too much of a good thing .
The frog part was from the jungle book by renyard kipling. she said that i looked like a pink frog as i had and still have very long legs so there you have it . (ribbet)

Dianeon W -I hope that answered your question about the dust part of my name .

Kate B- yes they do have a real good funny bone LOL ! i like frogdust much, much better than my other nick name. that one i will not share today Lol...........that is for a latter time .

Chief Chicken- i really do hope that we get a lot more people here. but not too many as it is hard keeping up with the ones we have now.

14 of the chickens that my neighbours own have flown into their vegetable patch. Usually it's just the hens that do that, but there are now three naughty young cockerels lurking in there too...I'm surprised that there are still vegetables growing in there!

You must've had a fun childhood. My son has a very good sense of humour and I'm hoping that he will use it to the full on his daughter - who is the hencam baby. We all went through the pregnancy, birth and, most importantly, creation of The Blanket! (If you click my name there's a picture of it!) It was meant to be a little blanket for the baby but ended up cot-size. I hated making it in the end and was glad to see it finished!

See, now I'm wandering off the point! We always had pets when I was growing up, and my hubby had a dog, but he would rather not have pets. I tell him its my only enjoyment and if he wants rid of my pets his motorbikes have to go first! (I have 2 cats and 4 rats).

PS Dianeon W is known as Diane. She lives on Widbey Island.
