Do it yourself between contractions; it will be a sterile environment, it'll give you something else to think about, it'll be something to while away the time - and it might make you feel better...

Hi I did an entry a couple of minutes ago but can't find it anywhere. It read somethign like "I little bit about my girls. I've got 10 ex-batteries, I've had them for 2 weeks and they have been out of the battery for 4 weeks in total. Some look more like chickens than others as some have quite a few feathers to grow. They have a huge secure shed and a fenced run about 60ft by 80ft. They seem to be settling in well and we get 3 or 4 eggs per day so far. We liv ein a large old house that has been split up so we have some great neighbours who are really keen to help with the chickens and find out what they can give them to eat from the kitchen so everyone seems to be happy so far. Can someone point me in the direction of adding myself to googlemap. Thanks T.

Hi again Tracy happy to hear about your hens they will soon feather up and look pretty. There are threads with ideas about treats and what they like to eat on here so trawl through and have a good read or just ask some one is bound to be able to help you.

Thanks for the welcome, I've now managed to add my location. I'm probably about 1/2 an hour from Sara. I've been looking at the comments on chickens with coughs as one of my girls seems to have developed one. I've only managed to name one of my girls so far "Indi" as she was the most independant one when she first arrived - she's also one of the ones witht he least feathers bless her.

Hi Tracy and welcome from me too. Those ex-batts must be having the time of their life in that big run and with lots of humans all wanting to help out! There is a thread about what hens eat or feeding them - something like that! There might be some ideas in there.

Tracy about your chickens with coughs you could try some Citrocidal grapefruit seed extract, it is a natural antibiotic and can be used for poultry and humans. You should be able to get it from healthfood shops and chemists. It comes in tablet and liquid form. You would need the liquid form for the hens and put some drops into their drinking water every day. The dosage should be on the bottle. In the tablet form it is good for dealing with the onset of colds for us. If the coughing is really bad it could be a trip to the vet it can usually be treated.

Hello, I'm in North Bedfordshire with my husband, an old springer spaniel, a young field cocker spaniel, two cats of dubious heritage and recently 4 chickens (2 suffolk blacktails, 2 fenning blacks). You may have seen that we lost a bird this morning but the lady I got them from was so upset, she brought another bird over this evening to replace her. Thanks to everyone for their kind words about Ruby.

You're married to an old springer spaniel?!!! LOL!! (sorry, couldn't resist!)

I live with hubby, eldest son, 2 cats and 2 rats. Youngest son lives a short walk away with his partner and my beautiful 17 month old granddaughter, proud owner of The Blanket. (Long story - short version is I knitted it, took for EVER, put me off and haven't knitted a thing since!)

Kateb - you jest but I did dump an ex-boyfriend and bought the springer to replace him the same week! Well, not entirely replace him - that would be just wrong and arrestable - but you know what I mean. Sometimes, in a girl's life, she's better off with a dog than a man. If I was a wreck over a dead chook this morning, goodness knows what I'll be like when Bronte goes "to the farm"!

I love the way sentences can be 'mis-read'. I followed a minibus the other day that had a sign in the back saying "disabled children stand well clear". So many interpretations of that!!

Hi folks and thanks for the nice welcome.

I need to ask a question, not sure if I'm in the right area for it, but I bought three pol bluebelles just over a week ago from a reputable dealer. One or all of them, not sure yet, is dropping yellow poo, very much like a yellow slug. This morning I noticed that one of the droppings was a little bubbly and IT STINKS! They are all eating and drinking okay and they are quite lively. Is it anything I can treat?

    Keeper of the hens

    Hi sgelder!

Yellow foamy poo can indicate coccy (coccidiosis) - it can often happen with new young hens as coupled with the stress of moving, they won't have built up the resistance to the particular nasties on your soil.

You can get a vet to test a feacal sample, or get some Coxoid (it's actually for racing pigeons but is considered safe for hens, although it's unclear whether you can eat the eggs of a chicken undergoing treatment)...

For a more natural attempt for a remedy, try adding a bit of cider vinegar to their drinking water, and/or adding oregano to their feed.

Hens do do some unpleasant and not so wonderful poo's, depending on if they've been stressed or eaten something strange so hopefully it will be nothing serious.

Of course, you should keep an eye on her in case she doesn't improve or gets worse, in which case a trip to the vets will be the best option.

Edit: Apologies to Diane for all the mentions of poo ;) And can you believe I was eating my lunch whilst typing all this out - just shows you become accustomed to talking about bodily functions when you've spent some time on this forum!

    Hi Neil

Thanks for advice, I'll certainly keep my eye on them, I've been told I can use natural living yoghurt too so I got some to mix in to their mash. I quite fancy the cider vinegar myself so might try some. Sorry did I drop the poo in the wrong box.

Just done some reading on coxoid, apparently there is a 28 day withdrawal period on eggs.

    Keeper of the hens

    :welcome: sgelder!

We've had some yellow foamy poops before too, they're very...um...pleasant :rolling:

I think they do these poops every tenth poo they expell...if that makes any sense :P So they shouldn't be anything to worry about - keep an eye out for blood in any poo's as that is probably the best sign that something isn't right!

You'll get more relaxed about their poo's as time passes - i remember when we first got our girls they were POL and I was paranoid every time one of them did a runny poo :D

Welcome again, and enjoy your new pet chickens :)

It's ok, I think Diane will appreciate the surprise :)

Let us know how you get on, and if the yoghurt / cider vinegar helps!

    Good luck!
