Welcome James! I think we chatted a few times. Good to *see* you here. Is there an Hen Cam social circle there at Leeds?

Red - maybe that should be one of your considerations in university selection - who has an Hen Cam fan club? My nephew is 17 and going through this application process. As we speak he has been hearing back. Good stuff too. He just heard back from MIT that he can have a full-ride scholarship there. Oh to be a talented computer geek... LOL

Hi I'm Christine and I love your site. I'm originally from Hull but now exiled to Milton Keynes. My partner Pete and I recently became responsible for four chickens at the bottom our garden (Hilda, Muriel, Beattie and Doris named after our grandmothers - seemed appropriate as they can be fussy and indignant!). We got our first egg on 14th January this year and they haven't stopped since, we're currently getting four a day in return for their favorite rice and boiled potato peelings.

    Keeper of the hens

What do you want your chicks for, Ace? Buff Orps are friendly, relaxed and docile but are a very large breed. They also go broody very easily.

Silkies look fantastic, make good broodies and are friendly and easy to tame. However, because they often go broody they're not very good layers.

Sussex hens are brilliant layers, happy to be held & cuddled and cope well in lots of rain - as do Rhode Island Reds.

Japanese bantams are pretty, they're easily tamed and fun to be around but they're not very hardy in winter.

Chicken Quiz! <----- This website might be helpful in deiciding which chickens would suit what you're looking for...

    Hi to all

I am Mary a Scot living in Surrey, I adore all animals, but spiders and other creepy's are not on my christmas card list, I have two long haired tortieshell cats, 2 fantail goldfish and a shubunkin. I don't have any hens due to lack of space but make up for it by the lots of ornaments around the house. I was so pleased to find hencam, watching the girls and now the wee chicks has been great. Those chicks are so funny and are developing all their own wee characters.
Thanks for all your hard work in looking after your growing flock!!

Hey Mary, I assumed on the other thread that you were still in Scotland! And Layla - welcome!! I'm in Birmingham too - its good to have another midlander on here. You've got quite a houseful - (well, house and garden!)

Nice to meet all of you. I did put a pin on the map in Minnesota-that is such fun. We have 7 hens, a german shepherd who whines waayyy too much, a very muddy golden retriever, two lovely barn cats(one of whom actually catches mice) and two kids or sprogs as some of you call them. Laura is 12 and Alexander is 8. Will catch up to you all on Thursday.

Great family!! Minnesota Wild are 'my' ice hockey team - I picked them because they were new and I liked the logo, but they're coming good this season!! Have a great trip.

Birmingham has a population of over 1million - I'm actually in Solihull that has a population of 215,000, so as far as I know we're not neighbours but probably a lot closer than Pete and Trev down under!

ISA browns are a good breed to start with. We got 6 at point of lay (hens about to lay). Okay, it actually took a couple of weeks for them all to be laying, but at least they weren't so small that the neighbours' cats got them all. In fact, they scared off the cats enough times. When you're more experienced and have some older hens around then get some chicks. Though if you're in a residential area you'll probably only be allowed hens. So, apart from "sex-linked" breeds, you'll have to get them at a few weeks old instead of chicks. Unless, of course, you have a plan for what to do with cockerels. The younger that you get them, the more you can handle them when they're young and the more tame they'll be. The hencam girls are already very tame, but these chicks will be tamer when they get a bit bigger (touch wood).

No, Sutton isn't very far at all - have been there a couple of times. I'm in little 'ol Chelmsley Wood, Solihull's poor relation. Would love to be in the countryside too but it'll never happen unless I win the lottery first!

Great photo Janice, and nice to put a face to the name. Its sort of how I imagined you!

Hi Layla! We are on-line together. With Kate! I think she's still online...

JANICE, I love that photo. Made my day. Look at the sparkle in those eyes. I think if (when?) all of us Hen Camers were gathered in a room - I would have picked you out. :D Its the smile in combination with the penetrating gaze. The look of someone who is paying attention to what's going on around her.

Come on everyone - are you going to follow Janice & Wazza's lead? Or are they the only brave ones. (Well, and of course Neil & Red.)

And Kate - no point in trying to claim you've posted photos of your genetic code. That argument isn't going to fly any further than the chickies can at the moment. :P

If I had as much as one decent photo of myself I would - but I haven't!! It seems my lot are intent of taking awful shots of me looking rough - never when I've got make-up on, always 10pm at night when I need my bed!!!!!

I was thinking we ought to have a thread that is photos of the backs of all our heads. The thought just amuses me on many levels. But I think it would work for the camera shy. And, you just never get to see that part of yourself really.
