Hey all! I've really missed being able to watch the chickens while they're awake. I wish we weren't 5 hrs behind and that I wasn't working every day now. I miss little Milly. ;-) By the way, you all are SO lucky. It was 37 C today here in NC. YUCK!!! I wish we had your wonderfully cool weather. Sorry I haven't been around. Hope I get to watch the girls tomorrow. By the way, I feel so sorry for poor Mil' when she gets chased and pecked but I guess there's nothing to be done about it. I also miss getting to just watch Milly w/o the quick camera switches but that's just me.

Hope all is well w/ everyone.

Hi Jacqueline, its a real shame we can't average the weather out between the 2 places! Is been slowly improving here this week - this morning was lovely but its clouded over here now. At least it isn't raining for a change!

I usually hate hot weather, but these past two days i've really enjoyed it. Everyone else thought it was too hot for teh bike-ride, but i liked it 'cos once you got moving it created a nice breeze...and today i've just been out on the grass revising, with the chicks sprawled around me. It's been gooood

    Keeper of the hens

I always get sunburnt on the back of my neck too. It's usually because i've been reading or something, so the back of my neck is more exposed than anywhere else. Plus i have short hair at the back, so that doesn't help :-\ I've been lathering on the suncream all day 'cos i usually end up burnt, lol

How badly sunburnt is it? I hope it's not painful Ace *gentle hugs* Alo vera gel (sp?) is good for sunburn...

In that case i definitely want one. Can't stand midgies. One flew in my ear on the bikeride yesterday. I screeched to a halt and started yelling my head off - i could FEEL the fly vibrating in my lug'ole and the littler booger wouldn't come out, and when it buzzed it sounded like a chainsaw right next to my ear! My dad had to squirt water down my lug to get it out :fierce:

I was on the verge of panic, I almost fell of my bike...i've never been so spooked as that before, i think it's because the fly wouldn't come out it was just there! A bumble bee went up my nose the other week too, but i wasn't too fussed then, just snorted and blew it out :D

And most of it is pointless. Apart from a pub quiz, will you ever really need to know any of the stuff they teach? English and Maths maybe, but unless you're specialising in something most of the rest will be forgotten.

By the way, it's amazing to me how light it gets so early in England this time of year and it stays light quite late as well. We don't get so much light so early in the morning! I was looking at lambwatch to see the morning light for a few minutes there.

Hello Ferg (goosegog!) Glad to see you've finally joined in the posting! Your chickens are really sweet!!!! The first one out of the coop looked like Tilly, but all three are soooo pretty! Have you got any other pets?

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

I don't think any of them are pedigree hens but the black one, Margo is a Sumatra cross of some sort, maybe with Rhode Island Red? That's what we were told anyway. She's likes to be picked up.

Geraldine is the red one, we think she may have some Welsummer in her. She's our most prolific layer but lowest in the pecking order.

Barbara is the big one. She's highest in the pecking order, definitely the most bossy but also quite susceptible to going broody, which we don't want.

They're quite fussy eaters. As well as layer's pellets, they also get treats. Sweetcorn being one of them. They don't really go for corn on the cob though. They go nuts for ham or bacon! There are more photos in their gallery here

    Keeper of the hens

    Welcome, goosegog!

So Barbara is the *uhum* slightly plump golden-y hen? Could she have some Buff Orpington blood in her? They are a lovely golden colour, very large and fat...they're docil AND go broody at the drop of a hat!! :rolling:

Sumatras are beautiful hens, they remind me of dinasours because of they're quite slim and the way they stand :)

Thank you for sharing the pics and video :cheer:

The way Barbara is looking at that vet, and the vet's apprehensive look makes me think Milly might have a competitor in the Death Stare stakes...

Margo is stunning - its easier to see them in the photos (thanks for sharing them by the way). Geraldine is a very 'pretty' hen, and Barbara really does look like the boss of the coop! I think CC is right about the death stare!!!!

    How old are they?

Thanks for the kind words about our girls! We're very proud of them! We have the neighbours involved too, they love them so we are free to go on holiday. We got them in September when they were troublesome youths and they started laying in November. They are quite partial to Andrea's vegetable patch! We have no other pets

    Diane,

Lambwatch is the live w/ sound sheepcam that is set up on a Yorkshire farm in the sheep pasture. The lamb that Neil and his family bottle-raised was sent there to live when the lamb was ready. Is that who Lottie is? At any rate, I discovered the site in a link Neil has on this site. It's lambwatch.co.uk and I love it. The other day, one of the family members that run the site and cam, Dan, was out w/ a chair at the cam, feeding bread to the sheep and chatting with us on his chat. It was funny b/c normally everyone would be talking by chat including him, but this time he brought his lap top out and was actually talking with us by name while we asked questions. It was really fun. Sometimes his parents come out and his dad reads poetry, etc.

Jacqueline, the lamb that NEIL bottle-raised???? I got up every morning and sat out with her for hours in the cold - my dad takes credit for everything, bugs me like nothing else; especially when he doesn't do half as much  Yes, that lamb (well, fat sheep now ;) ) is Lottie, although i don't think you ever see her on cam at Lambwatch.

    Keeper of the hens

It's good to know hencam has spurred many fellow cam-sites, hencam.com, pigcam and lambwatch are all thanks to us and the fun we've had helping others get set up... :)

If you actually saw the hassle and work that Dan's chat causes him, you would understand why hencam doesn't have one anymore ;) Put it this way, it's a good job he has understanding employers... ;)

Welcome to hencam anyway Jacqueline, we're really chuffed (and a bit proud) that we have a really nice community here and although off-topic is the norm, we like it that way and it's all fun and friendly foremost!
