I wanted to get hens, but they are just so expensive ( it's not just the girls themselves, it's the other stuff you have to buy...) so now I'm getting ferrets in stead. I mean, obviously you don't get a nice brown egg in the morning, but they are so cute! I just love them!!!!!
But I don't really think hens and ferrets would mix, you get my meaning?

We used to have a chap round here who kept his ferrets in his pants when he went to the pub. (Drinking den to you foreigners) He is dead now.

Hens are cheap! Especially rescue ones, like the battery chickens. And corn isn't expensive, and there are kitchen scraps/leftovers.

I had a friend who had 2 ferrets - brother and sister - but they kept fighting and I think either one killed the other or they had to give one away before it did. They smelt a bit too (but I think that was their human's fault for not cleaning them enough) but were just soooooo cute!!!!!

This chap with ferrets in his pants was quite odourous anyway. He was the local rat-catcher.

Is having a ferret in his pants what killed him?

Hens are very cheap...you can easily convert an old rabbit hutch into quite a large and suitable coop...what're you planning on keeping your ferrets in?!

However if you definitely want to get ferrets: WE LOVE THEM! Me and my dad have wanted ferrets for years, but because of mum's allergies we can't have them :-\ I first played with a ferret when i was about six in the local pet shop, and the owner let us get the ferrets out and play bowling with them - it was awesome and they loved it! We rolled them up into a ball and then literally bowled them down the aisle, and they came scampering back for more :D

Well trained ferrets make fantastic pets, just make sure you have a lot of time and energy to play with 'em - especially if you just want one.

They bite if you don't train them not to, and they will 'play-bite,' but that's just a little playful nip and doesn't hurt

A mother ferret will bite (or nip) her kid's necks to discipline them (like a parent giving her child a smack on the bottom or hand I guess!), it's just that ferrets skin is quite thick so it doesn't actually hurt them that much.

The trick in keeping a ferret is that you need to teach the ferret that YOUR skin isn't that thick and that it hurts! The need to learn that it does actually hurt you, but when you've done that you can play all sorts of games with the little rascals! It's supposed to be easy to train them (but never having had ferrets I can't say through personal experience).

I have played with ferrets a few times and they are great little bundles of energy, and they mostly sleep during the day so make good-ish pets for people who work during the day. They shouldn't be kept in their cage all the time either, so they're not an "easy option" but still great companions.

Hey avanti. The bishop here has 2 ferrets called Bonnie Rascal and Lucy Rascal. They are superb and very smelly. They are working ferrets. Was hard getting them jobs at the factory but hey, someone in this family has to work! No really they work (I know you will know what i mean).
Funniest thing ever was other day the Bishop put a dead rabbit in the run for them to eat and the postman said " isnt it about time you moved that rabbit and got the kids another? " Ah, how we laughed.
We like ferrets here at the henporium but keep them away from the hens. OOh, that would be funny! Er, maybe not.

    Great story Cake! :D

OK how freaky is this. After I made my post (about a friend having had ferrets) I had to leave to go the rink. I hadn't seen the friend for at least 5 or 6 years, and when I got the rink I sat chatting to Rachael. I then heard a voice say "Hi Kate, haven't seen you for years" and there he was!!!!!! I told him I'd only been thinking about him and his ferrets an hour before (he looked at me like I was a bit weird, then remembered that I've always been weird!) and said that yes, the one did kill the other, then it died from loneliness they believe. Gotta be the coincidence of the month!

Yes, I thought that too. Suppose its a bit like men - can't live with 'em, can't get away with killing them. Tough life!!!!!!

Seeing Wazza's mouse reminded me of a cute cartoon about a little mouse looking quite disgusted at a hunk of Swiss cheese and saying, " Of course it only has half the fat and calories . It has only half the amount of cheese. " I too think ferrets are cute. I can not afford one though , as they are quite expensive to buy at the pet shop. It would be great to find a breeder who might be willing to sell baby ferrets at a more afordable price. I do not think I would want to carry one around in my clothes Back when the grand-daughters were about 2yrs and 3 yrs. there was lots of purse snatching going on around our town. I started putting a small wallet in my bra when I would go shopping. I thought nothing of it until we were in Walmart jewlery department one day and I noticed the clerk was giving the girls and I dirty looks. The reason was that the girls were stuffing jewelery down the front of their dresses. Monkey see , monkey do , I guess . They had observed me putting my wallet in the front of my dress so they thought they were supposed to put things in their dresses too. I had to explain to the clerk that I was not teaching them to shoplift.

Ha ha!!!! You could've made a tidy profit out of it if she hadn't noticed!!! When my friend's son was a baby he used to pick things up off shelves but she usually noticed and put them back. One day she got home and found he'd 'shoplifted' something so she took it back to the store. They were extremely rude to her so she never shopped there again. So much for honesty.
