That's an idea; Kate, see if you can get the Walnut Bach Flower Remedy (Boots have it) and add 3 drops to her water bottle/bowl. It's the remedy for homesickness/nostalgia/dislike of new situations. Rescue Remedy might help too - for shock.

The vet said she is most likely depressed (I told him that!), plus she had lice, and that has left her low emotionally and physically and he thinks its myco - a bacteria that the majority of rats have in their lungs and causes them great problems. She is on anti-biotics. I am still worried though as it wasn't her usual vet that saw her, so I will take her to see him on Monday if I can.

Thanks for all the good wishes and positive vibes, we appreciate it so much. x

Not good. Her appetite is falling - she didn't eat much last night at all, and she's very weak and not holding on to me, preferring to try to slide to the floor rather than climb. I spent a couple of hours with her this morning - she fell asleep for a little bit on my shoulder snuggled into my neck.

Will give her some mash potato for tea - she usually loves that.

I think she's past rescue remedy! Vet tomorrow so hope he has some ideas.

She is so sweet and trying so hard to be her usual self. I thought she had died inside my jacket last night - she wasn't moving, eyes half open, limp. When I grabbed her to check she jumped awake as if to say "What the f.....lippin 'ell is going on?!"

I had to have Molly PTS yesterday (Wed 20th May). She fought so hard but her lungs were just too congested. She wasn't getting enough oxygen to keep her system going and was too weak to move, eat or drink. I was priviledged to spend all of Tues evening with her - 7.30 til 2am - but had to watch her get weaker and weaker.

She was only just over a year old, too young to be taken from me. I know she is happy and healthy and at the Rainbow Bridge with Patrick. I can't believe I've lost them both in less than 2 weeks - the grief is so hard to bear.

Sleep soundly girls - mommy loves you. x

I know this might sound weird, but it's sort of good that they have gone so close together. Molly didn't have time to miss Pat too much, and they were reunited quickly after little separation. Hope that makes sense.

I'm sorry that you had to have this happen to you though, Kate. It's very sad, love to you all

Thanks Red and yes, I understand completely. I was hopeful that Molly would accept the twins now that she was alone, but a little bit of me was really worried about what I'd do if she didn't. I hated the thought of her being all alone for the rest of her life.

The empty cage is horrible to see - a constant reminder - but I don't want to remove it as that's like wiping them out. I'll decide what to do when her ashes come back.

Posted By: KatebYep, I thought so too! Its sad that I won't get to see their lovely vet for a while, but brilliant that they're better and I don't have to drive through all that traffic!

After I posted that message the forum automatically went to the top and I saw this message I'd posted. Me and my big mouth. In total I made about 17 trips to the vet since January, but every one was worth it (except the one where I had to see the other vet and he was rubbish!)

You are such a good mum to your rats.
Do you have a stuffed toy (not a rat) that you can put in the cage. It can help with the emptiness as long as it doesnt remind you of a rat, maybe a hippo or a doggie or a teddy. It helped friends of mine when they had an empty cage until they bought more pets.

It still has all the stuff in it, igloo, cube, box etc. I was going to clean it out today but couldn't. I need more time.

I think the twins are wondering where she's gone - they're quite subdued at the moment. I'm told rats talk to each other all the time but at a higher frequency than we can hear.

Vet doesn't think its a 'sinister' lump, probably a cyst-type thing. Has advised I keep an eye on it and if it grows or starts to annoy her then he'll see if it needs surgery but he thinks it'll go by itself. Phew!! The vet was great (again!) very positive and supportive. Says he's looking forward to NOT seeing me again (in the best possible way!)

I took Caitlyn in to the rat room to see the rats today. She loves visiting them and does a great "gnawing rat" impression! She will say Saffy's name really easily but never manages to say Angel and just ignores me when I try to get her to. Today she said "hello Saffy". I said "say hello to Angel...A n g e l" and she looked at me and said "Al-fee". Close enough I suppose!!!!

By the way, Angel's lump has near enough gone, just a tiny little pimple left.

So pleased to hear that Angel/ Alfee is ok now. Aurelia says woof woof to the cats. Poor things were so scared of her when they were home a couple of weeks back. She crawled after Sootz and then decided to stand up as she neared to him. He thought she was about to attack him and got into a fair panic and shot off upstairs to hide behind the bathroom curtains.

Maybe next time I get rats I'll just let her name them from the outset - save confusion for them all!!

My cats hear the door and immediately disappear upstairs. Sometimes they're caught unawares though and the panic in their faces is quite amusing! Caitlyn's cat (Cosmo) adores her but his brother (Timmy) is terrified - funny how some will put up with babies and others won't.

Very long time since I've posted in this!

Just thought I'd let you know that Angel's surgery went well. Vet removed a large mammary tumour and 2 smaller lumps. I presume they were the sebaceous cysts I last posted about but I saw the nurse when I collected her and she wasn't sure.

However, she won't leave the wound alone so I'm having a hard time with her.

That's just it Lee, you can't! The vet has got better at operating though, and I think the anaesthetic cream they used inside the wound helped. A little lampshade would look funny but they'd need leg extensions to be able to hold their food! In America they wrap them like a sausage so that they can't bend in the middle to reach the wound. My vet doesn't believe in it though!

She seems uncomfortable today, but is still being good - hope it lasts! I am less anxious, will feel better when another 24hrs has gone by.

Thanks for asking NN - they are both still a bit squeaky and despite Saffy being on antibiotics for 2 weeks she's only slightly better - but at least she's not worse. Angel's scar has completely healed up, she just has a bald patch where the fur is still to grow back. Hopefully they will be OK for a while now (though I think they love seeing their vet and are always very lively around him!)
