    Keeper of the hens

Really random thread i know, but Peter's 16000 got me thinking...Anyone else got a favourite/lucky number? Anybody superstitious?

Number 3 is my lucky number, always has been since i was little. Which is why i was so chuffed when we ended up with 3 hens!

I'm not really superstitious, but i do salute magpies. I have a friend who crosses the road when she sees a black cat (is this real or has she made it up?!) and she won't walk up and down stairs when other people are on them - which is a nightmare at school, but she gets to go in the lift!!

As for phobias ~ I hate talking on the house phone and won't answer it if it rings. I don't mind answering my mobile because i can see who is ringing me, but refuse to answer the house phone.

Just thought this would be quite interesting. Obviously you don't have to answer if you don't want!

Number 7, colour purple and I ALWAYS tug my forelock to a magpie and ask 'How's yer father?' I fling spilt salt over my shoulder and never put new shoes on the table.

Number 9, say "good morning/afternoon/evening sir" to magpies. I always count how many times I stir a cup of tea so that I can stir them all the same number of times. After I have a shower I always put my watch back on before I leave the bathroom. (No idea why, but don't want to tempt fate that something might happen if I didn't one day!)

Really dislike spiders, but its not a 100% phobia. I don't run screaming from the little ones!

CC is never going to believe me - but its 7 and purple for me.

Why is it that we all like odd numbers...?

Magpies don't dwell here - so neither does whatever that superstition is. Now that I've been a servant to two black cats, I have no illusions about them, either. I DO hesitate when I spill salt... Or before I walk under a ladder... And then (no lie CC) I think *come on Diane, you're a THERAPIST.* I count things like that sometimes, Kate. A little touch of the OCD for you & I, eh?

Kate made me wonder about a couple of things. 1. Is it tempting fate to walk out of the bathroom, post shower, in nothing but a watch? 2. Do any of the rest of you have an order in which you put on your clothes? (I really don't feel right if I put the garments that cover the upper half of me on prior to those which cover the lower half. And yet the final 1/4 of the lower half doesn't feel right either - ie. my socks first. I even prefer putting on my right sock, then left sock, then right shoe, then left shoe. Uh oh.)

I'm afraid of heights (ever since my center of balance changed at age 13) and therefore, also of flying - or more specifically, landing. I'm also afraid of other drivers and their decision-making *skills* and driving in unfriendly weather. But then, you've witnessed my driving. A phobia is an UNREASONABLE fear...

Do our Brits have *step on a crack (...in the sidewalk...) and break your mother's back*? Or, what happens when you break a mirror? Can't remember. LOL-maybe you lose your memory.

The southern section of the US has the best superstitions - I hope Janice will fill us in on some new things to be afraid of!

My number is 27 . I seem to get lucky with those things that happen on the 27th or have 27 in them. I even go so far as to see that Stan starts his day off with 27 dollars in his route collection billfold . When he had heart surgery we were a week before our 27th wedding anniversery and I told the doctor everything was going to be just fine as we were going to have a wonderful time dancing . We did. I did have a hard time when they took him down there though . I went to the waiting room and covered my face with my son's leather jacket and just broke down until a program came on called " IT HAPPENED THIS YEAR " and it was about 1927 and I knew all was well. I do wonder though if I am not just plain kooky or have a compulsive disorder. I always set the car radio on a certain station before I get out of it ( for good luck ) and I park in the same spot at the post office ( in hopes of not getting something unlucky in the mail such as an old bill I forgot to pay. )One southern superstition is " don't step on a crack or you'll break your mother's back . "

Cool stuff! Heh, that is wierd Diane...although Peter likes an even number

I have to get dressed in a certain way, and when i'm going downstairs i have to tap the ceiling above the stairs three times - if i can reach it :P No idea why.

You don't get magpies?? I never knew that... :o Isn't it strange how we all have our own little "things"?

Step on a crack and the monster'll get you. And it's LEFT sock first, LEFT leg in a knicker, LEFT leg in the jeans first. Or the space/time continuum will be disturbed.
    In Marlow, anyway.

THAT'S why you drive on the ... ok, lets just say ... OTHER side of the road, CC :D

I think the rituals, counting and seeming compulsive behavior that we have all described here is what most people do, and its only a disorder when its extreme. In other words, MORE counting, MORE ritual and MORE often-to that point that it interferes with day to day functioning is a disorder. All of us, as humans with neocortex's, realize life involves lots of events that we can't control and there are more coming in the future. So we develop little rituals that soothe us because we can just hope that they might give us some control. That tiny hope is all we need usually.

I believed as a child that a witch/monster lived under the bed. (If the witch had to go out the monster took over!)

Both of my sons are obsessive about the order they put their hockey kit on. Danny insists on having an even number on the radio volume in the car. Hubby is obsessive about laces in skates, shoes, trainers - they have to lie perfectly flat and loosened off correctly before removing footwear from foot. I just yank 'em off and throw 'em on the floor!

I didn't realise I was associating with such a load of obsessive cranks!
In fact I didn't know such obsessive cranks really existed so much as this.
    Cor Blimey!
I thought it was only me that counted things. eg.., dead heading plants, stairs..,

One of the Open University sessions asked us to select somthing we did in a routine way and try to change it around to see how we felt. I chose to start washing the left arm in the shower, not the right side. Quite amazing really how this then spread into other areas of life.

Random, but which came first the chicken or the egg? What does everyone think? Once you really start thinking about it and trying to work it out it's mind boggling...I guess we'll never know. I wonder why it's chickens, and not which came first: the adult or the baby, or some other type of animal?!

That's what it's like with me :D The night before i posted the 'chicken or egg' question i woke up at 3 in the morning randomly thinking "What came first, the chicken or the egg??" I mean...hello?? I was awake for ages thinking about it, and i kept telling myself 'right, okay, stop thinking about it, go to sleep...' Then a few minutes later i'd think 'I really wonder what did come first...?'

I'm sure i've knocked myself out in my sleep before. But that's different to fainting. I dunno :o

Nancy, i just uncovered the biggest worm under a rock in the chick's coop. It was huge and fat. I picked it up and waved it at the cam in the hope that you or Cake would be watching, but i guess you weren't :( ... (unless you are too traumatised to speak about it :D )

See Diane, we've got worms for Cake and nancy like runny poo is for you!

I try and rescue grubs out of the chick's pen. I'll feed them to the big girls 'cos they eat 'em whole, but the chicks fight over them and pull them in five different pieces, and then leave them writhing on the floor...they don't even eat them after they've tortured them first :-\

It's okay nancy, just put your head between your knees and think of runny poo...

    Kate, very good :cheer:

This one time in grade 6 some kid decided to make food with worms for his science experiment. his hypothesis was that the presence of worms had no effect on the taste:fierce:

My phobia is the usual creepy crawlies especially spiders but I don't bump them off, I get my son to shift them.

    Keeper of the hens

There was a bumble bee in the chick's water bowl today, floundering. I didn't notice until i'd picked it up, jumped about a mile into the air, dropped a Milly-egg in the process, and finally had the sense to get the bee out before it drowned :-\

The milly egg didn't survive, and i fell on my bottom whilst cleaning it up to boot :( ...the bee on the other hand did survive, so i guess it was worth it.

Ah well, your suffering was not in vain! I speak as one who keeps honey in for the express purpose of 'refuelling' tired bees! :)
