My first job was when I was 13 and involved going to the shops in the mornings before school to do this awful womans shopping. She came to my Mum and told her she needed help as she had just had twins. Of course Mum said I would do it. I hated doing it as it made me late for school most mornings. The woman always used to want loads of stuff, bags of spuds and real heavy things. She did pay me 2/6 a week thats in old money. She wanted me to do ironing after school as well, but I made such a fuss about it I didnt have to do it !!!!

I used to help my Dad on his market stall on Saturdays. I was paid sixpence an hour. We sold drapery type stuff. "Wadded" quilts whch were a bit like today's synthetic duvets but stuffed with a coarser padding.
We could get hold of "Ends" off the towel run, all frayed but very popular as it didn't need clothing coupons.

My first job was quite involved. I was required to operate machinery, appliances and hand tools on a regular basis. I had to converse with prospective customers and help to fulfill their specific needs, often in an advisory role or as a representative of the company conveying my product knowledge, to provide the best business deal for both parties. At times my role consisted of product manufacture, once again at the request of, and to the specifications required of the customer. Sometimes I dealt with the complaints section.... often redirecting thier concerns to a team member. Oh.... the company was called "Hungry Jacks"

Welcom to Trev, our stand-in Quiz Master.

Strangest name I gave to a pet was the one I described only a couple of weeks ago.
A pedigree Burmese kitten I bred, whose fur (grey aka blue) was so scant that he appeared to be bald. He was registered as "Piglet of Pantop" (Pantop was a very, very old name for the local little strip of land we used for all our registrations).

The only weird names I can think of were our rabbits when we were small. Mine was a called Christmas day and my brothers was called Boxing day. We had to give them to Father Christmas in exchange for our presents. We never minded though as we always had new baby rabbits in the spring. They were never real pets like we have nowadays we just had to muck them out and feed them which was just as well really.

I had a friend who had a pony that was called Trotannat, when asked about the unusual name she used to say well it trots an nat

I don't think I've ever given a pet a strange or unusual name. Closest I can get was my first rat, Patrick, who belonged to my son's girlfriend (Rachael) and who they couldn't take with them when they moved out (not pets rule at their flat) so I inherited her! Patrick was female, and named after Patrick Starfish from the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon. Rach's first rat that she had when she was in her early teens, had been called Starfish.

Not being a music lover, I just prefer the spaces between the songs thank you.

I do object to being subjected to music ALL the time. As well as shops, even documentaries are overlaid with it, so much as to be unable to hear the sounds that should be with the programme, eg., nature prog where the birds can hardly be distinguished, etc., Which is why I will often have the subtitles instead.

OK, I'm just an old biddy with hang ups re others invading my space.

I got my knickers in a twist there (That's why I walk funny) Thought I had deleted the second one that appeared.

Silence is beautiful. The sounds of nature are beautiful.

I am a mile away from the motorway and over a hill but it has been very loud the last two days.

Writing tha word "beautiful" twice there brought back memories of having to write it out a thousand times.
Left a permanent scar - I always spell out each syllable as I write.

I have been at Georgie's home for two days only this week. Five days next week, we have a school project to do. A 3D model of rain forrest with all the canopies, creatures etc., Some of it can be written work.

Did I tell you about the papier mache model of a sitar last week? Drove me potty. We filled it with builder's expanding foam - which continued to expand -
I hope it has settled down as we dumped it in the teacher's room at the end of last day before hols.

too hard! somewhere between 1965 and 1985 for me - do they have to be 10 consecutive years?

Like Leevaux, I was also born in the late 60s (also in April!) and grew up in a musical environment so it's difficult to choose. The 80s had the best hair, though.

Yeh, I like the stinky stuff too.
My Dad would buy a very strong cheese, the shop had to go into the back area to get it from the 'safe' as it was too powerful to be allowed out!

I do find that supermarket cheese is very bland, prefer to go into the deli' in the market.

Vicky is a very busy girl at at times needs a little help.

I will dive in and give you a topic.

Now, be warned my "topics" are often a little over the top and I am quite happy to be censored...

    Here goes -

I hate the shape of WCs. Even the modern swish ones I still find very indelicate.

Google "Clark Sorensen"'s designs for urinals.
Now just convert these into "sit-ons"

I fully expect Neil to excude me from the list if he finds this a little too strong.....

Are you being saucy?!!! They are fantastic designs aren't they. I don't get what the question is though - are we picking a favourite design?

If OK with everyone, I'll have a go..

What is it that transports you to another place or a memory the minute you smell a certain smell or scent?

It's the smell of engine oil.
Instantly I'm back in all those wonderful individual workshops where dedicated mechanics build and tune up the racing bikes for (mostly) oval track speedway.

The smell of tangerine/clemantine oranges always remind me of Christmas as a child, that was the only time we had them as they were not available most of the year like nowadays.

Wax crayons and tobacco; infant school where our crayons were kept in old painted tobacco tins. If I smell that particular combination, I'm four again!

Lavender. Reminds me of infant school. Each class ued to take it in turns to cut the lavender, make bunches, and sell them to pupils to take home to their parents.

    Thanks Kate.

Remembered scents and smells are the strongest memory triggers ever for us all.

    For me,
I love the smell of petrol, rubber tyres and leather seats. Reminds me of my parents car.
I love the smell of steam engines and the heat that comes off them. It transports me back to the railway station in Mombasa.
I love the smell of the sea, again, Transport me to the the Indian Ocean in Kenya.
The smell of snuff...Does anyone remember snuff? My dad used to take it when Ma was not looking !! I'd sneak a pinch now and again when no-one was looking. Reminds me of my Father.
The smell of the earth just after a rain. I'm in Kisumu by Lake Vicotria..most probably only 3 or 4 years old.
The smell of the laundry being ironed, using those old heavy irons with coal inside.
    The smell of kerosene.
The smell of a warm cow.
    :yes::yes: I know I sound totally mental.

Now that's a smell I'd like to, er, smell!

I hate the smell of peppers (the big red, green or yellow ones), but they remind me of when I worked in a fruit and veg shop after school so evokes a good memory.

Sometimes I catch a smell on the wind that I can't explain or pinpoint but it will remind me of my nan. Maybe it's her, reminding me that she said she'd look over me!

Kate....so true. Often some slight scent of something and your memory stirs but you don't quite know why. I have been known to say that perhaps it was my Dad just checking that I was doing OK?

Lee...you know the smell of cows when they are all in the stalls in the morning, sort of chewing away and there is a mist rising from them and if you go close to them, there is that lovely grassy smell. Hmmmm. Warm Cow. :-)

    Keeper of the hens

I hate the smell of frying bacon, like A LOT!! :ack2: I don't really like the smell of cooking meat though...it quite often makes me happy that I am a vegan
And OMG just realised I forgot to tell you all that Lyle went veggie!! It had absolutely nothing to me (I was the one laughing and telling him he'd give up after a few days!), but he has done me proud and been veggie for a few weeks now...good for him if it's what he wants!

He says he likes the extra challenge of trying to find something nice to eat. He's a chef-type-person, so I guess he'll start making exciting veggie meals now, and maybe some will even be vegan!
