Did you check out MY PROFILE :) I have a picture of my kitties (Martin & Maya) as they inspect some meowing cats from a UTube download :P

I had to do a lot of blocking off certain rooms to my dog intitally (where the cats could jump in and feel safe.) After about a month the cats would chose to be fairly close to my dog so I could tell she thought of them as different from - say - the neighbors cats :)

I had a dog as a child and she was always OK with the cats. I think a lot is down to smell - once they all realise they're 'homed' in the same place they get on. A friend had a dog that was a relentless "stray" cat-chaser, but loved her "own" cat!

I've been wondering about getting a miniature goat - and how my dog would react to that. She's a hunting breed, no herding instinct. She'll stand right next to the alapacas at this one farm where we walk and act as though they are invisible...

Well, she is definitely a mix. But a breeder of dogs drove by us while we were on a walk, stopped her truck (which was full of dogs) and called out to me: Hey, you've got a little Australian Shepard there. I said no: A mix. She said: No, mostly Ausie - I know, I breed them. So that's one "portion" probably.

Her adoption papers said the family leaving her off at the shelter where I got her knew she was a Rhodesian Ridgeback-a breed created to hunt lions. So I'm guessing they knew who mommy was and not daddy :) She has the body shape, face, ect... of an Ausie and the color and that ridge that runs down the back of a Ridgeback. But definitely the nose of a Ridgeback and zero herding instinct.

I googled both australian shepherd and rhodesian ridgeback and she doesn't look like she's 'classic' for either, but I suppose that's because she's a cross-breed. Looks like she's a Rhodesian colour with a sheppie's coat! Obviously a beautiful girl with a lovely personality!

They're the cat version of Heinzian - pure moggy!! Emmett is tortie and white (and big and fat!), Foggy is white with black bits and long fur and Joey(her son) is like her but short haired. We also had his brother (Frankie) for 3 years until he died who was black with white bits and very long fur with the best personality ever. We said he must be Hari Krishna because he never killed anything and would 'shoo' spiders under the cooker so's his brother couldn't kill them!!
Would love a Maine Coon one day - they're HUGE!

Ah yes, Maine Coons are amazing looking cats.

I've heard that black & white cats were bred for their companionable nature. Frankie sounds really sweet. Emmett is tortie AND white? I would really love to see what he looks like.

    What does "moggy" mean?

I hadn't heard that about black and white cats, but Joey is obsessed with my eldest son and follows him everywhere! He also insists on sitting in the bathroom while I shower in a morning.

Moggy just means that they're no particular breed, just a common feline!

Frankie was lovely and we miss him so much, but I'm sure he'll be waiting for us on the other side - have you ever read the poem Rainbow Bridge? Google it but not if you're feeling sad!!

Emmett is my big girl with a boy's name! If I can work out how to get a photo on here i'll post one!

Joey - that's so sweet!! He sounds like a doll.

Moggy. Hmmm, I wonder what the root of that word is. Is it just used for non-human animals; cats and dogs? Can a plant or a person be 'moggy'?

Emmett is a girl? LOL. If you want help with how to post a photo, email me at whidbeyelectsbarack (at) gmail.com and I'll send you some instructions :) (Neil tears out his hair as he reads this. --- Hope not, actually!)

I'll have to check out that poem. It does sound familiar. This may sound weird but my beloved little cat Judy, who passed away about a year ago, still visits me for adventures together.

Joey is a darling - he sits in front of the screen whenever we're on the computer until he gets a kiss, then lies down and purrs the whole time. He's here now - say hello to everyone Joe!!

I don't know where moggy comes from - have only heard it used for cats though.

I had a dog called Judy when I was a child - we adored each other. Frankie was around for a long time after he passed on - he used to rub my legs while I was washing up or walk across the bed. My husband said it was imagination, but I'm sure it was him saying hello.

    Thank you both!

I often wondered what a calico cat was and now I know! Sounds a much nicer description. It was my nan's favourite colouring so when we went to my husband's friends house when his cat had a litter of 5, it was no competition on which one to choose. She usually looks sad though - this was the best picture I could find. Her eyes are big and black on all the other photos (or reflecting the light in a creepy way).

Did you know that tortoiseshell cats are always female - its a genetic thing. In England people always assume 'orange' cats are male and call them ginger toms, but they can be either sex.

I had a ginger cat called Jinx (like Mr Jinx from the cartoon) that was found abandoned in our road by a dog owner who couldn't take him in. He loved little kids and in the short time we had him, we lost him twice and found him at the local school! 3rd time he went missing my son saw him in the playground but the teacher wouldn't let him out to catch him and we never saw him again. :( I often wonder if he wasn't abandoned, if he was just in search of a new adventure.

We had something unusual happen with our rag doll cat. She got outide while we were gone about 9 weeks ago and got pregnant . When her time came to give birth .... she had only one kitten and it was a stiilborn male kitten ..... yellow and short tailed and extremely long.... measured over 9 inches from head to tail . She must have bred with a lynx. We are taking it to the vet to be examined to get his opinion as to the father and taking her to be checked for damage from the birth.

Cor blimey! Poor pussy. In human terms that would be something like a six foot baby!!! I also am awaiting the vet's report please.

After my pedigree cat had had her fourth litter (over a period of five years) I had her neutered. It was so distressing for me, (though she took it ok) that I swore I wouldn't have another female neutered. We had her on the pill for some time prior to this as Burmese come into season every few weeks all year round and are so very noisy about it.

Wazza; if you're coming in for biscuits, you'd better like cats, boy....because when Mick the Plod used to hide his bike and nip in for tea, he used to find a cat curled up on his coat quite regularly. And if you don't like cats, you might only get Rich Tea. Waitrose own, not McVitie's, either; I get 'em for the rabbits... :)
Kate; my 19 and a half year old tortie, Trouble, died 2 years ago, and she was built along the same lines as Emmet (ie, for comfort, not for speed). We now hAve Tuppence, who is a skinny tortie who rushes in and out at 100 mph. Anyone know if the energy from a catflap can be harnessed in some way...?

Gosh Janice your poor kitty. She must have had an awful time birthing. I hope the vet can sort out what it was to salve all our curiosities!

Do any of your cats do that reflexive nursing thing - where you touch the corner of the cat's mouth and they start chewing incessantly? Maya is sitting on my lap, self stimulating by pressing her mouth-corner against my knuckle. All the while the smell of her breath is wafting up to my nostrals and slowly stangling me..... Gaack. To say nothing of the hideous sound of someone chewing air.

Another idea; can the cameras be timed? I mean, there's not a lot of point looking at an empty coop during the day, so could that one be turned off/deployed elsewhere in the daytime? I get into watching the Girls, and suddenly WHAM! I'm looking at an empty nestbox!

But if they turn it off they might forget to turn it back on and then we'll miss them sleeping!
The new post thing works OK for me.
Have you ever surfed the net for any other cams? I found a cat cam and a rat cam but they were really boring - the cats had gone out and the rats were asleep in their box, and they weren't real time it was time lapse. Hencam is definately the best one around!

They don't have to turn it off...just miss it out of the loop during the day, perhaps? I dunno; I work with 300 year old technology every day! :D

Lol! I think they wouldn't be attacking you through a site dedicated to watching some hens on a webcam, Ace! ;)

Hencam HQ's streaming PC is on 24/7, no hackers to report.
