Thanks for the update on the chicks, Red. I hope you will have nice weather and they'll be able to go outside and play around.

Our power went out for a few hours in the night and I lost all of the baby ducks I was waiting for in the incubator to hatch out. My 2 duck hens are sitting on a bunch of eggs that are due to hatch in the next couple of weeks, so I still may have a few baby ducks. My goose has been sitting on eggs for about the same amount of time, so maybe I'll have a few baby geese too. I hope they have better luck than I did hatching out babies with the incubator this time.

They were about a day from hatching, Red. I hope my hens will be able to hatch out at least a few babies. Runner ducks aren't the best mothers in the duck world, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see how they do.

Lynn, so sorry to hear about the loss of the ducks....next time, maybe you could rent a small generator to get through the power loss?? My uncle has a big generator just in case...they lose their power often because of ice storms...
I have a battery-backup unit for the computer....food for thought!! I hope the remaining eggs are hatched successfully by their moms....

Everyone is pecking happily this afternoon....

Diane--aspirin makes you high?? well, I had to take one last night...I have a tooth that needs root canal(on Tues.) and the pain at night is excruciating...even though I'm on antibiotics my face has swollen up along my lower jaw...AWFUL!! I'd like to get high on aspirin at this point!!! LOL!!

I have two 5000 watt generators and a 3000 watt, the incubator and my PC were on a battery back up, but it was only good for 45 minutes and then it shut down..the power was out for a couple of hour. The problem was, it was in the middle of the night and I wasn't awake to start the generators. If the alarm on the battery back up went off, I didn't hear it. ....and CC you're right..Bloody power suppliers!!! But it was my fault for being too fast asleep to know what happened, till it was way too late for my baby ducks.

Here's the latest news on the chicken coop: we ran out of wood and don't have enough chicken wire, so my dad is going to buy some more. It's coming along nicely though, he's doing a good job. Here are some pictures below (just hope he doesn't take a look at this thread otherwise he will delete them :P ) :

And then things get even more extreme when he starts using the drill!

And here's the end panel bit!

We're hoping to move the chicks into the run this weekend. It's 4ft wide, 10ft long and 3 1/2ft high. We're going to put it next to the rabbit hutch, if it will fit, so Domino will have some friends :)

    Lynn
So sorry learn about your loss.
When I lived at home in Scotland we were always having power cuts, the shops that sold candles did a roaring trade.
My sister gets power cuts when the tail end of a hurricane reaches her area although she has a generator, her water for her house comes from their own well and that is powered by electricity during one severe storm she couldn't use the generator to pump the water only basic needs so she had to got to the local church to fill buckets of whater and bring that back, she emailed after she had power to say she had no idea a loo took so much water to fill, needless to say she's got a stronger generator.
A power cuts can be equalled to the hand of god you never know when it's going to happen.

Thank you for the pics of the Chicks they are really growing into their feathers and bloomers.
I'm sure they will really appreciate their Designer coop when it's ready, it was so funny them inspecting the cardboard box, my cat's especially Darcey loves boxes and would have my house like cardboard city if I allowed her, at the moment I have snoring sounds coming from a box a few feet away from me. Typically you could buy all the expensive cat beds etc., and she'd want the box it came in.

It's a lovely sunny morning here in Surrey. Lynn the wee mouse was running back and forth last night, probably a field mouse. When I lived in a top flat of a Tenement in Scotland we had mice until I got a cat which never caught any thank goodness but it was enough to scare them away.
Before the cat, my ex was terrified of mice, the tiniest one came out from behind the gas fire and sat on the stone hearth he jumped up to get his feet on the armchair he gave me such a fright as I didn't know why he was in such a state then I saw the wee mouse just a baby. Mice don't bother me it's creepy crawlies that wind me up.

We had a mice go into the rabbit hutch a few years ago, then it moved to the house, then to the brooder when Milly was hatching her eggs, and now it appears to be in the big girl's coop. Damn thing - as long as it doesn't get in the shed and infect the girl's feed, i don't mind. I don't think it can get to the big girl's food in the bowl because it's on top of the plant pot - where abouts was it?

There are pictures of it from last year. Somewhere. Big huge ears.

You know it can't be just one mouse, right Red? The only way it wouldn't be able to reach the girls' food is if you put vaseline on all sides of the dish and plant pot. Problem is, if the girls are like my yard birds, they might eat it off. Not sure if it would make them sick.

We used to watch it (I'll use the singular if it helps) looking for remainders from the girls' dish in the dead of night. That and the slugs...

I like mice, but not really when they're in the chicken coop. Ages ago i saw some earth move down near the sand pit in the coop where an animal was digging, guess it was the mouse. Last year it was cute because a mouse built a nest in the wall next to the rabbit hutch and we watched the babies come out...but the chicken coop?? Good job the mouse only comes out at night otherwise the chickens would kill it within no time :o

They're quite good at digging stuff up, they dug up a weird coin thing once, half a plant pot another time, and recently they've been digging up lots of white pieces of china :o

I once found a fish skeleton with some of the scales still attached at my G'ma's house. I thought it was fantastic, and my dad helped me put some stuff on to preserve it and i've still got it upstairs along with my fossil collection! I also found a hatched bird egg once and kept that, this was way before we had chickens or hatched chicks :P

The china is quite usual; in old houses (or where old houses used to be) the rubbish wasn't collected, you buried it! So if you broke a cup, you buried it. I've made a sort of mosaic from all the china my two have scuffed up.

That tends to be bigger things like cats, dogs and foxes. The three older girls have become very successful at scaring cats away when they get too close

A rooster will also fight to the death in order to try and save his flock, and a mother hen will die trying to save her chicks.

Yes...well Milly was a fantastic mum - she let three hulking buff orp chicks sleep under her wings until they were 8 weeks old, and she flew at a cat head-on to keep it away from her babies

Milly just met the chicks for the first time (well, she saw them when they were about a week old but they were in the paddling pool and she couldn't get to them). She was really good, and didn't go for them once :heartsabove: I carried her up to the patio and yelled for the chicks, and they all came running...you should have seen Milly's face!! :rolling:

The chicks, who have never seen an adult chicken so close before, were running after her round the garden then getting scared and running back to me. Milly was showing off a bit, scratting in the dirt and pecking things out and eating bits of paint and stuff ( :o ), and the chicks were stood about a foot away just watching her. Pappy went right up close to her, and Milly just kind of stared at him and scared him away :rolling:

It was really cute, and Milly was so well-behaved. I was expecting her to launch herself at them first chance she got. I tried to introduce Tilly to them but she was more bothered about the grapes in my pocket :-\

Its good to hear that Milly got on so well with them! Wonder if its because she's been a mom herself and still has that mothering instinct. I assume Penny and Tilly haven't or am I wrong???

We had a goose sitting on a nest around the lake edge and with all the rain we had last week we got up one morn and she was sitting in water. 3 of the 6 eggs had hatched and the chicks had drowned and we only managed to save one. It is so cute tho. Nature is cruel sometimes

    Keeper of the hens

Brought the chicks in for bedtime and it's their first experience of absolute darkness...there was lots of worried chirping going on, and every now and then there'd be a danger call and all the others would join in. Scotty (the shrillest peeper) just would not shut up, and i had to cuddle & stroke him till he went to sleep :D

Everything is quiet down there now, so i'm hoping they've settled down, bless them :heartsabove:

    Chick, chikedy, Chick, chikedy,

    I don't know any more. Do yo-o-o-o-u?

    Are they asleep yet?

Nearly 11 pm and a jet if flying overhead. Otherwise nice and still...I notice that the small bowl is sitting on top of the flower pot to the side. I'm not seeing any activity in the straw at the moment...

By the way, I hope that paint Milly was eating doesn't have lead in it!!!!!

Did I miss the naming of the chicks??? Scotty? and who else?
