They're marbles - Red said its so's the chicks don't inadvertently drown themselves when they have a drink of water.

Most hatching happened off camera anyway. When they were wet they weren't much to look at, and flopped down out of shot. Now they're fluffy and in shot. :D

Yeah, newly hatched chicks apparantly try and drown themselves because they are used to being surrounded by fluid in the egg...?! Obviously the mum hen would probably look after them and keep them away, but even with Milly we still put marbles in the water

Sorry about the little one who couldn't peck through the membrane! That's really so sad!!!

Great view of the chick incubator! I see four up and about...can't tell if one is alseep in the food dish. I think so...but it hasn't moved a muscle if it's in there. One chick went over but still no motion..????? I had a gerbil who slept in the food dish...if he wasn't sleeping, he was knocking around a tomato paste can and then dragging it over to the dish and dumping it in! Then, he would stand triumphantly at the can standing upright in the food dish!!

No one was in a dish when I came on Gloria. Then one chickie moved over to have a drink. Which was cute. Now I just looked back again and one chick is nestled in the food dish, another in laying in the water dish. Those marbles are a good idea! Is the water warm enough to keep the chick from getting too cold?

You put them somewhere warm and dark, and talk to them quietly...and that's all it takes. It's amazing, withing seconds they're asleep!! I think tomorrow i might end up with all five chicks in bed with me (that sounds so wrong :D ) my dad thought it was so funny, although i'm dreading the moment when one chickie does a poop in there and i don't realise... :o

They like to be snuggled uner my chin so they can hide under my hair!

If anyone is wondering what the odd-looking thing in the corner of the brooder is, it's an egg box :D They seem to enjoy pecking, climbing and falling on it. We put marbles in the bottom and scattered some food in, and they're really enjoying themselves trying to get the food out from between the marbles

Hi, everyone! I am busy moving books around and emptying cabinets as we will be having all our tile floors throughout the house power washed, the grout color changed, and the sealed next week! So, essentially, I have to pack as if I'm moving!

Great view today of the chicks! I see the other container full of marbles as well.
That chick in the food dish is really so cute and attached to that dish! They are all adorable and I can't wait to see the pics of Red with chicks in her hair!@!!!

Wow - I just saw about two full seconds of actually cam streaming before the still picture again. I can see why everyone is glued to the cam! (I really need to get on broadband sometime...) :P

I love it that the chicks now have some brain building activities and can hardly wait to see those photos of Mommy Red.

Good luck with the floors Gloria. Sounds like its going to be beautiful.

Often when I come on I only see four chicks - and get the same heart lurching feeling Ollie described. But now I know that one likes to hid in the lower left hand corner, behind the container wall from us. Ah! There's Red, cleaning up and providing a source of entertainment for the chickies all at the same time. :D :D :D

Hey everyone, hopefully later on today we will be acquiring a child's paddling pool ~ the chick's next brooder!! We plan moving them into a bigger space sometime this weekend, as you've probably noticed that they're pooping quite a lot right now, and it seems we're changing the towels every two seconds :D

Also, chickie 1 is experimenting flapping / flying, and it'd be nice if s/he had more room to practice in :)

We'll give you an update about the paddling pool when we actually get it, and get it set up

    * A monster toy free from MccyD's! :D
    * Two bowls for them to climb / sleep in
    * A mirror

Wow, welcome Forester!! Glad you've found your way to the forum  Yeah, the chicks are in the house under the heatlamp until they're a little over...the paddling is 4ft, but looks a lot bigger with them inside!

Great idea to do this online for fellow chicken lovers. We'll be back often for views and uodates! Soon we hope to have more baby chicks ourselves to supplement our 7 older hens. Dear daughter wants to show them in the county fair.

Aww cool! How many chickens do you have and what breed? Wow, seven years old...our eldest two chickens are gonna be five this year, and i'm quite excited about that  This was our first time hatching chicks in an incubator and it was so nerve-wracking, have you hatched them in a 'bator before? And if so how do you cope?? :P

We have 7 hens that are approximately two years old and one that is 3. They are various breeds including buff orpington, light brahma, speckled sussex, white rock and a mutt girl that we're not sure what her background is. A few years ago we did the incubator thing and hatched out 4 chicks-it was so fun but stressful as to were they alive etc! Would like to try again and may have to as the hatchery we normally use is out of female chicks.

What time is it there? It's 12:40 pm here.

Oh sorry you said that in the other post but i misread it :P You're oldest chicken is the same age as Milly, and she's a sussex

We hatched some chicks that were Buff Orps last year under a broody hen. They were massive when they were 16 weeks old and lovely lovely chicks, but a fox got to them and none survived :(

    It's 17:40 here - almost time for food :P

Vicki, The county fair is for our county which encompasses several small towns and one larger town. there are kids showing animals, veggies, arts and crafts etc. There are rides and lots of yummy food. I think it is time for lunch right now! Ice cream sounds great!

Everyone, what are your favorite chicken breeds? We really like the brahmas, orpingtons and the the sussex, but love all chickies:)

Welcome to the group, Forester. It's great to have another person from the USA. (I'm from Washington state) Is your daughter in 4H or FFA?

I love the new paddling pool. They seem to be having a good time with all the new things in there to keep them busy.

My baby Runner ducks are due to hatch tomorrow night or Monday morning....if I haven't killed them all in the incubator already. My chicken is due to hatch out the duck eggs I gave her, on the 11th of April. I'm having a problem keeping the humidity up enough under her, ducks need so much more than chicks do, but she's giving it her all tho.

    Lynn,
Sounds like you have a lot of poultry happenings going on right now-how exciting! What kind of chicken(s) do you you have? Yes, our daughter is in 4-H and this will be her first year showing anything.

We have all kinds of chickens, Forester..right now we are down to 21 chickens. They mostly die of old age here. We _don't_ get rid of them if they are too old to lay. We let them live out their days here..and do our best to spoil them rotten. My hubby's mission in life is to rescue chickens that no one wants. We mostly have Easter egg chickens and Rhode Island Reds, but at least one of several different types.
I use to be a 4-H leader when my daughter was in to raising dairy goats. That was many moons ago now, as she just turned 40. 4-H was a ton of fun. I think your daughter is going to love it.

4-H stands for Health, Heart, Hands, Head. Their emblem is a green clover leaf. It was started as a rural youth organization, for kids who lived on farms. Now they have groups that are in the cities too. It teaches kids about animals and how to take care of them. They have groups for sewing, cooking, agriculture, cats, dogs..you name it and the kids have a club for it. I think it was started in 1905.

FFA is "Future Farmers Of America". They do about the same thing as 4-H only it's supported by the public school system.

Lynn, I bet having dairy goats was fun. We have often thought about getting goats-so much personality! Did you make cheeses?

You mentioned FFA-our local chapter had a donkey ball game last week. It was absolutely hilarious. Those donkeys were good at getting the players off in many different ways!

Hey Red...4 of the ducky eggs have a pip in them and they are jumping around..I think they are a little early tho, they aren't supposed to hatch for another 48 hours. 4 out of 9 isn't too bad I guess..and I still could have one or 2 more pip by tomorrow < crossing fingers >
The eggs that were under my chicken hen were abandoned this afternoon..so we won't have any duckys from that little experiment

The chickies are all busy with little projects.

WELCOME Forester - I'm from Washington State too (like Lynn-but north of her.) Have you put a *pin* in the Hen Cam google map? (Top menu.)
