Just been watching the starling flock swooping around outside. Suddenly a very large bird flew into the swarm and wow, did they scatter?
Couldn't see if the large bird caught his lunch but it wasn't long before the birds were flying about again.

I saw a programme on swarms once Ollie, and I think it said tat they find it harder to catch a bird in a swarm than one on its own. I once saw a hawk on the path outside our house with a pigeon it had caught. It made short work of it!

    Keeper of the hens

I've just found out the website hosts were hacked this weekend, and then spent some time restoring everything and then finally upgrading the server.

This probably explains why the forum has gone strange - they've upgraded the platform it runs on, so I think it's introduced some incompatibilities :-(

I'm currently in discussion with them but I suspect I might have to fix this on my own and I have no idea where to start...

    update

It's fixed! Should be fine now, fingers crossed!

    Keeper of the hens

Me and Lyle had a nice encounter with a little slimey friend today :o)

We were walking along in the dark and Lyle stopped me saying "Is that a frog there?" pointing just in front. I squinted in the dark and sure enough there was a very round frog sat by the road.

I bent down and scooped her up and after a few attempts at escaping she settled down. We carried her (now named Harriet!) across the road, underneath a very busy road, and to the other side where there are lots of fields and a huge lake. We put her down on the banking and she hopped into the water.

She was so lovely, and had such gorgeous eyes. We have some snaps on Lyle's phone, and might even get round to putting them up some day.....

    Hmm, she was beautiful!

The most mental thing happened today...we lost Wart, the goldfish

He was nowhere in the tank! Lyle started emptying all the toys out and, as he lifted the lighthouse which was Wart's christmas pressie, all the water fell out from the hollow inside and Wart tumbled out with it! It was seriously crazy, because the hole doesn't even look big enough for Wart to fit through, and there's no room inside for him...but we couldn't see him at all.

We're thinking of putting a plant pot in there so he has more sort of 'boxed in' places to hide, instead of just plants.

I used to know someone who always called me Tracy. Each time I would reply "Kate" and he'd say "oh yes, sorry". We'd have a conversation and he'd say "lovely to see you again Tracy". I remember being in A&E once with my son and he walked past (he was an ambulance man). I told my son the story and about 10 minutes later he walked by again, saw me and said "hello Tracy, how are things with you?" My son had trouble stifling his laughs.

    Keeper of the hens

Well, another two frogs were rescued tonight.

Both were heading in the direction of the big pond in the park where we put Harriet. The first frog (named Isabelle  ) was a right little fighter, and several times I had to catch her mid-jump before she landed on the ground! We had to chase her away from the busy main road to safely pick her up...

And the second frog was a really heavily pregnant lazy one that was in sight of the pond but needed a little extra help avoiding the dog walkers and joggers that were about!

Nah, don't worry about it Kate ~ our explanations was that Wart was poisoning the water and injuring himself and Bogs!!! Bless Wart, we did love him.

I think we maybe feel even a tiny bit relieved that Wart has gone (hope THAT'S not too insensitive!) just because it was horrible to see him acting depressed, and not knowing if he was in pain...and we spent so much on treatments and none worked... *sigh*

NN, I have tiny Tree frogs that come to spawn in my pond every year. They are about the size of your thumb nail when they are grown. To be so small you should hear how loud they are at night. My fish don't seem to be interested in eating them, which is a good thing. This is a close up of one on a very small Lilly Pad that hatched a year ago.

Lynn those are such dear little frogs, how lucky that your fish don't bother them. I have had to take the spawn out of my pond as the koi were starting to eat it. I have it in a bucket with a load of pond plant. They have started to hatch out now. I had to put the bucket into the green house as the hens thought it was some new sort of drinking game and then Daisy chipped in fishing for them!!!!

Nah, not that big a fan of spiders. Strangely enough me and Lyle were just talking about if we manage to get our animal sanctuary set up in the future, and someone begged us to take some tarantulas off their hands, would we? I said we'd have to, but we'd give them away free to a good home!

I like most breeds of snakes, just not the deadly ones! Or those prone to biting. Love big mammoth snakes, like the python I held at the zoo. Twelve feet long and sweetest snake ever :heartsabove:

CC, my dad really wants another snake anyway! I introduced him to the Hognose snake and now he has fallen in love with them (didn't want one at first) and I think he likes the royal pythons too.

I like most snakes, but Ball Pythons (although great snakes) are short and fat and a bit weird looking...still wouldn't mind one though :)

Went to Ikea tonight with Rachael and we bought Caitlyn a 'scary spider'. Its a big glove with 8 'legs' that you can put your fingers in to make it look real. She often says she likes spiders but we didn't know how she'd react to it. She LOVED it! She then had me and hubby crawling around the floor finding little black bits of fluff that she could pretend were little spiders!

No they didn't, but I had a nightmare about her chasing me with one!

She was over here today and saw a (very fast, jumping!) spider on the wall outside. She was getting nose to nose with it and almost touched it 3 times but thought better of it. She watched for about 10 minutes.

What’s going on last night? I looked in on hencam and thought I was seeing ghost out in the field. Being dark with only the street light, maybe just the light playing tricks.
No there are people laying the field. Dark and light blurred images moving about.
One stood up then another, one run to the stone fence and jumped over and laid in the road. The other ran and jumped the stone fence then they both ran down the road and out of sight. But wait there are still several others moving about in the field. I’m sure they don’t know that a live cam is watching them. The sun is starting to come up and it’s getting a bit brighter out. Maybe I shouldn’t be watching this. I feel like a voyeur invading their privacy

Neil has rearranged the cam sequence now and we can't see the field cam. Possibly a good idea.
Thanks for straightening up the bedroom cam Neil, it was rather below deck ship like!

Wow I didn't see or hear anything Ronald, but I'll have a nosy out of the window tonight! Possibly bored teenagers?

I think the land is private land so I'm not sure if they're allowed to camp on there!

I'll sort the cams out in an hour, views should be back to normal then.

It must have been mad night out last night as it was crazy down our road as well. It is normally nice and quiet but first there was a car that the exhaust had gone on going up and down at high speed. Then there was hell and all noise from a group of people. This was at three forty five.... I didn't get up to have a look as I would have been even more awake if I had and then never drifted off for the rest of the night. Several people were shouting from their bedroom windows telling them to be quiet and to shut up could have been quite funny if it wasn't so dam annoying.

oh yes some men do I saw an exhibition once of things that lighthouse men used to make they would knit sew and cross stitch. It was real interesting. Of course we dont have the light house men nowadays. My kids can all do enough stitching to sew on a button and mend things. Tim learnt to crochet and used to make super dishcloths as his christmas gift to grandparents.

Well I did have a look from the window the cam is perched on, and I can see some black canvas (tent?) all saggy and bedraggled on the ground - you can just make it out on the outdoor cam to the left of the streetlight.

Weird as we didn't hear anything, and usually we do - our bedroom is above the room with the cam so it's near-ish, and we have a window open a little bit so we can hear anything like that (I heard the chickens panic the last time the fox was a-visiting).

And speaking of ironing... I have a huuuge pile to do too :-( I might leave it until tomorrow though because Helen isn't at work so she doesn't need her stuff ironing! I think normally we take it pretty much in turns to do it but I hate ironing, unless I can have some music on to help pass the time... Maybe they should have a "Now that's what I call music to iron to" range of albums!

I iron as I need it, like the French do.
That is one of the reasons they look so smart.
But I only iron what I have to. I had a friend who even ironed her husband's socks - and they had six children!
