Diane, here in the Graham area, the broadband I use is $48.19 a month. the speed today is 7650 kbps download and 731 kb/s upload. I wouldn't go back to dial-up for all the tea in China. As soon as I click on a page it's already loaded, on dial up, I'd sometimes have to wait several minutes for something to show up. I don't have a lot of time to sit here and wait anymore for things to load.

    Keeper of the hens

Milly came in to see the chicks today. She kept trying to get IN the brooder with them...dunno if it was to mother or savage them! Then she got on my lap and fell asleep in the study, but she kept getting up and trying to get in the brooder or just stick her head over the side, very funny

Also, i think chickie 4 may be trying to learn how to crow...we have a prodigy chick if he (she?) is, as they aren't supposed to start trying till 4 weeks old at least. Webster and Scrambled never tried, and this little one is just over a week old :o

Hey Red we'll assume Milly wanted to 'mother' - its a nicer thought!!! Perhaps #4 is the only boy and he's taking this opportunity to get a word in while he can!!

Hubby has his i-pod plugged in to the computer to charge it so it slows everything down (gives me the effect of dial up - how do you cope Diane?!) Anyway, the chicks look like they're playing statues as they lurch from one shot to the next! :D

We gave the chicks rice for the first time tonight. They went crazy for the black rice :D One chick grabs a grain and, peeping loudly, goes into a corner to eat it. Another chick, hearing the peeping, goes to investigate...and soon all the other chicks are chasing this one chick around the paddling pool with a small grain of black rice hanging out of it's beak :rolling:

I just love watching the soon not to be so wee chicks, they really brighten up my day with their antics. It's great to be able to watch the chicks going through the stages to being a young adult. Rhode Island hens have always been my favourite, in my child hood I had a book about different types of hens and Rhodes just seemed to stand out.
I was looking at a site in the US and they seem to show their hens, do they show hens here in the UK, I can't remember seeing any at the Agricultral shows I went to in Scotland.
Does any one else have a favourite breed of hen?

I was watching the chicks earlier and two squared up to each other and neither would give ground then one turned and ambled away giving the ground a peck as they went.
I can't think where they show hens either in this country will have to do a bit of searching.
Kate I don't have any hens either just budgies in the past which I adored but as I have two moggies I wouldn't want to take the risk. having said that I didn't think I would have goldfish either but a couple of years ago when my daughter and her boyfriend split up I inherited the fish LOL.

    Wow, chickens are shown at:
    * The Yorkshire Show
    * The Lancashire Show
    * And smaller shows, like Otley (close to the cam, as is the Yorkshire show).

And I rather like buff orpingtons, but Rhodies are nice birds, and especially good to cross breed with.

Yes, they'll be figuring out the pecking order pretty soon...they're all having little playfights with each other already, it's just one big fight with chicks flying in left right and centre :-\ Chickie 1 also gets insanely jealous of the other chicks. If a chick flies onto the paddling pool and i stroke it or hold it, chickie 1 flies up and barges through, pushing the other chick aside.

Hehe, i came down this morning Diane and three of them were asleep in the box :P

Nancy ~ Easter egg box, cardboard box, food & water dish, empty bowl, upturned bowl, cuddly Rudolph thing, silver / stripey disk, Spud Monster, mirror, tray full of soil.

Frizzles are prettier and cuter too :P

Yes I did see that! I never realized that chicks could get so vicious especially over food-like substances.

We've just finished a hard 3 days of getting our tile floors cleaned! Now we have to put everything back together.
I just finished getting my computer hooked up again so I"m checking out the chicks for a bit of relaxation! They were just pecking around, but now most are back asleep. One is pecking in the rectangular dish.....just hopped away. It looks lovely!

    Of to bed! I'm exhausted!!

I wish they would learn to sleep sitting upright though, Lynn. It always gives me a bit of a jolt to the heart when they lay flattened out with their faces in the sawdust... Its cute how they sleep in a little group though. :)

How is Chelsea this evening? Maya has decided to follow her lead. For weeks now, whenever I sit down to the computer, she dashes over and curls up on my lap. Its Maya's Place now. No Martin allowed.

Chelsea is sitting on my lap watching the chicks..and drooling on my leg..she always drools when she is really happy. Since the chicks were born, I've had a soggy pant leg, she's REAL happy.

The skiers are going to love it. I'm not that fond of snow. It snowed here last week. Isn't this Spring? I was sure it was supposed to be Spring. I've had enough of Winter already. I want it to go away.

    Keeper of the hens

Our ex-next door neighbour used to have a great dane that drooled ALL THE TIME. It was the cutest dog ever, and a total coward, but he used to love being stroked. He'd come and rest his leg on your knee and just drool all over you :P

We can guess the genders, Nancy! Chickie 4 is a boy, we think, he was the one who attempted to crow and his feathers (tail feathers especially) are growing a lot slower than the other chickies. Depending on the breed, this often indicates a boy. All the other chicks appear to be girls...they're all acting like girls, apart from possibly Chickie 2. I can't quite believe we're lucky enough to have just one boy though, we'll have to wait another few weeks before we can really tell :)

    Keeper of the hens

Here's some more chick pics! Also, after studying the chick's new feathers i've come to the conclusion that these aren't RIRs we have here but some other breed. I posted on BYC to see what they thought, and everyone agrees they aren't RIRs. The only suggestions people could think off were Buff Orps, but these feathers are different to Scrambled, Webster and Luca's...i was thinking maybe white leghorns but i think their chick fuzz is too dark for that...we'll have to wait and see

Chickie 1 sleeping next to the Easter Egg box :)

    Chickie 2 looking tiiiiired.

    Chickie 1 asleep again

I tried to upload some more photos, but photobucket broke :(

When they run some of them don't realise they can brake and they're over the other side of the pool when they just wanted to step out of the dirt tray.
    They are so funny!
