Glad that Dad was able to sort them out! I hope you showed Lyle how to do it so that if it happens again they'll know what to do. You should still get a plumber out, see if he can sort out the temperature thing - it shouldn't do that!

Haha, one of the baby hissers has definitely inherited Zelda's personality! When you touch Zelda she spends the next five minutes tearing around her terrarium hissing like crazy...well, Lorri does the exact same thing! She's the only baby that hisses, all the others take after Humdi

Two of the locusts newly shed today, and they are massive! They are a bright yellow colour because they've just shed, and for the first time you can see their wings. They're getting on for 2 inches :)

I have put some items into my Amazon shopping trolley after following the link from hencam, which raises 2 questions for me. When I buy them, do I again have to go through the hencam link so that you get the pennies from the purchase?! Can I put items in the shopping trolley without going through the link and then buy them via the link so that you get the donation?

Does that make sense? If you could let me know Neil I'll make my purchases. I'M WAITING!!!!!!!! :face-smile:

Amazon are quite clever, and they only class people who originally came FROM hencam and then went on to purchase as a valid 'click'.

I suppose it makes sense, they don't want to pay out for people who were going to buy something from them, but then go through an affiliate afterwards.

I'm not sure how long the affiliate cookie lasts (if at all), sorry!

Another linky link! I expect people have seen this before...?

    http://www.saynotocrack.com/index.php/2007/03/31/tiger-cares-for-piglets-and-vice-versa/

"In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans that could be found quickly, were a litter of weanling pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger."

    Keeper of the hens

I was trying to find out why Pets At Home had stopped selling birds after hearing a rumour they had been banned for cruelty (surely not, birds have even less laws on how to care for them correctly than rabbits and rodents do...). Anyway, unsurprisingly most everyone on the internet hates Pets At Home, and I found this photo of an overcrowded cage at one of the stores:

Could they fit anymore animals in there?!? And what about their policy that bunnies and guinea pigs shouldn't live together?!

It's ridiculous when you think back to when we were wanting to buy fish from there, and they said our tank wasn't good enough for their fish (because we didn't have a certain type of filter and hadn't brought in some of our water for them to test), and yet half of their fish are dead anyway!

I've just heard that a wonderful rat-artist passed away overnight. Dru and Matt are well known in the rat world for their artwork. Matt had a brain haemmorhage last night and died. They had had a very bad time of it for various reasons over the past 18 months, and it is very sad that this should have happened. If you would like to see their art here is the link:
    http://illustratedrat.blogspot.com/
Dru tends to do the watercolours, and Matt did the line drawings.
I am sure all the rats met him at the bridge to welcome him there.

    Keeper of the hens

I've seen on a few websites now people stating the average life expectancy of a chicken (not one killed for meat, a pet) at 3 - 4 years old - why?? That's not true! I've heard of chickens living to 15 years old before (I even know someone who has a chicken that is 17!!), although admittedly that's very rare

I always thought the average was 6 - 8 years, what has anybody else found? Not including chickens that have been sadly killed by other animals or egg binding, things like that.

Um, could you keep your voice down, Red? Eric thinks chickens only live 4 years or so...:tooth:

The thing with averages Red is that they can get skewed very easily. Elderly hens are probably quite unusual, whereas young hens being killed by foxes or dying because their owners/vets didn't know how to treat them is probably quite common and will pull the average down. I suspect that if the average is 3-4 years then the mode (most frequent) could be higher. But who measures it and what's their source? I am sure a well cared for hen that is fortunate with good health can live a good long life!

It was on a few 'keeping pet chicken' sites...including the Omlet site which I was really surprised about!

I see - maybe its lots of people like CC then hoping it'll convince their partners to let them have them "for a couple of years"!

The youngest of my big chickens is 6 years old and the oldest is 10 years old..I think that's not true either, Red. The ones I have lost have either been to dogs, raccoons, hawks, or heat stroke. My Silkies don't seem to be as hearty as my big girls however.

Just watching the Hencam and there's Neil stashing away his Christmas presents into the garden shed.
And is that Red following him down to see if she can have a peek?
Even Penny has come to the coop door to see what's going on.
Penny is getting her breakfast in bed, Tilly must be off-camera somewhere in there.
Awww, now Neil is giving Red a massive hug... the best Christmas present of all.
