Hee hee! THought I'd got away with that one WAzza!

Chelsea and Maya are so cute - my friend always said cats were her "favourite waste of time". Too true!

So, mystery eggs!! Why aren't they RIRs? What made you first suspect they could be an 'alien' variety?!!

    They're definitely chickens :P

I was looking at their feathers a few days ago and suddenly thought "Eh?! They don't look like rhode island red feathers to me..." Gave it a few more days and they're obviously not rhode island reds...they're supposed to be a dark flecked brown colour, but are actually white with pale brown markings!! People have been suggesting many different breeds. I'd be happy with some Buff Rocks, or Golden / Red Sex Links...anything really, they're still adorable :)

He is by no means an expert in poultry though and has probably been nowhere near a live chicken since 1980. His 18 month old little girl loves watching Milly, Penny, and Tilly and the new chicks. Ebay can not always be trusted to sell the right eggs to produce a certain breed. Others have ended up with a different breed than expected. Atleast they are chickens and not buzzards . They are beautiful ....... no matter the breed .:heartsabove:

Some pics of golden comet chicks - says the males are white-ish and the females are red and white. On reading around it seems its common for ebay to sell eggs as one breed when in fact they're something different.

    Meanwhile, on earth...

Hi everyone, quick post - if the chicks appear to be huddling together under the heat lamp (at the bottom of the screen near the mirror) can you post please

We've raised their lamp again to try and harden them up, but just want to check that they're not too cold! They've been cleaned out again today and have about 6 inch of wood shavings...dread to think what the mess is gonna be like when we get home :o

Cheers Diane, i've been watching the chicks and everything seems okay...as long as they're moving around the brooder scratching & exploring than the temp should be alright, it's just if they're spending all the time under the lamp that we should be worried..

Yeah probably...if so there's gonna be a lot more pooping to come, because i refuse to be anything but no.1 in the pecking order!

That actually happened to someone, one of their hens believed she was higher in the pecking order than her humans...she used to chase them round the garden and attack them! :D

Chief Chicken, Sorry I can't tell Alan Hale that you admire him...I haven't seen him for a couple of years. We did have dinner once and I met him at an event...he gave me a copy of his book about the comet...we were active in politics together for awhile. He ran for office up in Lincoln County a few years back. He subsists on research grants...working up at the observatory near Alamagordo, which is 50 miles from here. I went up there once and in the middle of the hot NM summer, it was downright chilly! Fabulous view of White Sands from there, too...

The chicks have just started moving about. Three are on the left side of the picture and one is now hear the tray. One is very close to the lamp ....oh, just moving out and stretching its wings and now also at the tray. One is now sitting in the round bowl and now all five either in, or near the bowl...One just flapped its wings and they've scattered a bit, but none have gone back to the lamp area.

They're only built to last if they're eating though Wazza, and chickie 3 isn't. She's no better, and i have school today so i can't be with her.

I don't think you could tell Sunny apart on cam. She's a light even yellow, not as dark as 1 or Midget, and has no stripes. And the thing is she scratches at the food with her beak so it LOOKS like she's eating but she isn't.

I think my dad's gonna take her to the vets today. And i think Martha's going too tonight.

    Keeper of the hens

That's the problem Peter, there are no symptoms! She just stopped eating, and as a result had no energy and her poops were clear because there was nothing inside her. She was acting quieter and sleeping more, but this was probably because she had no energy. She seems chirpier since she has eaten a bit.

She's eating tiny amounts of some mash we made by mixing water with her feed (thanks BYC for the tip!) and has had a tiny amount of yoghurt. I've also seen two healthy looking poops out of her, which is good...I'm crossing my fingers for her

Janice, Martha is my pet mouse. I discovered she had a tumour about a week and a half ago, and it has tripled in size since we last went to the vet. It's now intefering with her movement and she's struggling to get to the food & water bowls. I think tonight at the vets she may have to be put to sleep

I hope you get on ok with your wee mouse, I've had a dog, cat and budgies when I was growing up, never occurred to get a mouse or a hamster of the like. I now have two cats called Darcey & Sophie they are long haired tortieshells and are 14 years old, I have a fantail goldfish called Issues, a fantail called pip and a large shubunkin called piper if he get's any bigger he's going to be in a tank on his todd.
I like the names you have given the chicks, I'm showing my age here I haven't heard of that DJ. The chicks are so lively and when they get up on the top of the pool they are very proud of themselves.
My sister lives in Virginia in the States and she has been following the chicks progress. She has 8 acres of grass and woodland round her house, and she feeds deer, squirrels, she has a family of skunks living under her garage, her drive is quite long and she says when she comes home in the evening she rolls down her window to sniff the air to see if they are out, she feeds them too, along with racoons, it seems all the wildlife seem to pass the word and she's surrounded with them, she even had two buzzards staying for a while who thoroughly enjoyed not having to look for their food, though my sister did wonder what the neighbours thought when they would fly around above the house waiting for her. Oh I near forgot she feeds a wee mouse that lives in her wood pile. She has two moggies of her own. So this menagerie keeps her very busy.

Janice I hope Stan is doing OK. Red - did you get to the vets? I suppose you need to be careful its nothing she can pass on to the others, but if she's taking a little bit of food then hopefully she's getting over whatever it was. Martha sounds quite poorly - though I was and still am more than sad about Joey, I knew it was the right thing to do to save him any more suffering. Everyone said I'd know when it was time and I did. Trust your instincts. Will be thinking about you all.

Hey Mary, Joey had 2 long haired tortoiseshell sisters! They were the prettiest kitties I've ever seen! Your sister sounds like a modern day Dr Doolittle!

the chick's wings are really developing now, you can actually see formation of the wings from the rest of their body texture wise. They can fly so high!, they're like birds now!(yes i know chickens are birds but i mean the common flying birds)

I think there is really no need for thier pool home if the chicks are just going to fly away continously like they are now!

I wonder if all she wanted all along was her old food bowl back?? Surely not...seems a bit extreme  Only thing i can think of though, seeing as she's suddenly eating dry feed from a bowl again...unless she just had a bad stomach the past few days? Eh, who knows...

Maybe chickens have a personal attachment to how their food is presented to them??? the mind of the Chicken is an enigma.

Its always worth trying it. Perhaps she's not as forceful as the others and a 2nd food bowl will help? crossed fingers it works!

Kate, I'm sorry about Joey and I know your heart is heavy with grief. We all are thinking of you at this time. Poor little Martha . Hopefully she and Sunny can get help from the vet. The procedure Stan had at the hospital shows he has some blockage in the arteries in both legs and may at sometime have to have by-pass surgery on his legs, but the doctor is putting him on medication for 6 months. To all who think of Stan, we both say Thank You.

Stan, I hope the meds help and Kate, I'm sorry about Joey. I know it's very hard...
I hope Martha isn't in pain, Red.

Right now, I see all the chicks. One just hopped back into the pool, and four are at the top of the picture, with one eating from the top bowl...now TWO are there...one abandoned the lower bowl. They all are pecking away...Hope Sunny is getting a bellyful!!

Well it's late at night here, so I think I'll be heading off to bed now. Night night everyone.

Just logged onto see the not so wee chicks, I'm so glad Sunny has eaten something, and I'd like to send Martha lots of love, just saw the chicks whizzing about the pool and jumping up on the sides they reminded me of the girls of St Trinians they are so full of mishchief.
    Well must go to work.
    Bye!
