One chick is hogging the food bowl and having dust baths in it. Then the others pick off the feed she has dusted onto her back.

    Keeper of the hens

Sorry to tell you all this, but Martha was put to sleep last night. The tumour was just too big and it started bleeding on the way to the vets, so looks like we chose the right time. We took her daughter Jayden for company, and the vet gave her a little gas to put her to sleep before the needle went in so it wouldn't hurt. It was very peaceful and calm, and when we got back we burried her under a tree where the chicks used to like to dust bathe and where my mum has just planted some flowers.

    GO SUNNY!!!!!

One chick is eating now, the others are flopped down in the lower corner near the heat lamp, I suppose.... Oops, another one is up....boy are they getting BIG!!!

And, condolences over the loss of Martha. My special gerbil, Gimpy Gerbil, is buried under a tree back in NJ. Gimpy had a "stroke" the day I bought him and his rear leg was stiff. I gave him physical therapy on the kitchen table and eventually his leg was OK again!! But, the name "Gimpy" stuck...He was the one who took the can and stood it up in the food dish with a look of triumph on his face....special little guy. And I know that Martha was special, too!

Oh, the chicks are all up and flying about...or trying to....

Gimpy sure was a special gerbil, Gloria. I agree with Red. My hampster also had a stroke but died before we could get help for him. Our little box turture , Toby, also had a stroke but the vet ended up having to put him to sleep. We still have his little shell . Stan had a lady make a little cotton filled stuffed cloth turtle to fill the sheel.

I have 4 climbing things for my cats of various designs and they do use them but if I have a cardboard box they have to have that till the novelty wears off, the only thing they never used was one of those cat beds that hang on a radiator, instead they just use me as a hot water bottle.

Watching the chicks on their branch I had the silly impression that they looked like performers on a tightrope in a circus, if you could train them just think of the headlines "First ever chick circus" LOL.

I bought a radiator bed for my cats too and they won't use it - I gave it to the PDSA charity shop in the end. I also have a tall scratching post, covered in that sisal string, with a carpet base. Joey used to claw the base but wouldn't touch the string, and the other 2 don't go near it. When we moved in here he amused himself by clawing my brand new carpet on the stairs. I got rid of a lot of the threads today now that he's not around any more. :(

The perch is great Red - can't wait to see all 5 lined up along it!!

Yeah. It looks like there are 4 chicks then there is a gap and there is the other chick. Maybe the chick that isn't sat next to anyone is Sunny.

Oh they do escape...they can fit through the mesh :D It'll come in handy when they get a bit bigger though.

They follow feet round the room (anybody's feet) and this has resulted in them getting stood on or kicked a few times...you have to be very very careful in the study now!!

It's difficult to walk when you've got four little fluffy things scurrying in and out between your feet :D

That's the worst thing, the way they cheep afterwards and look at you as if to saw 'What'd you do that for?!' it makes you feel sooo guilty, doesn't it?

My 14year old cats still get under my feet and they get so offended when you trod on them, especially at night in the dark if they are lying sprawled out in the hall.

Yeah it makes me feel guilty if my cat does that too. She does the puppy dog eyes thing at me.

They don't seem to realise that if they purposefully lie right where you're gonna walk, it sometimes results in them being stepped on :D

They look much cuter on cam in colour, don't they? Like proper chicks! And you can see the colour of their feathers (and the fact that they're blatantly not rhode island reds :D ) now! They've been suggested as possibly red / golden sex links...but who knows, we're just guessing really.
