    Hi all

My 2 girls have stopped laying all of a sudden, why oh why has this happend and i have now ran out of eggs :( Nothings changed, they still have the whole garden, havent changed there food, they havent been spooked. I thought they were supposed to stop laying when the nights got darker not lighter? If this is there end of lay season how long does it go on for? also i havent noticed any lost feathers so they are not going through there mault. Please advise?????? Regards Jo x

    Keeper of the hens

Hey Joanne, was it one of your girls that went broody? If so, she probably won't lay for around 5 weeks after her broodiness, sometimes it can last for longer. Is the other girl acting broody, and she has stopped laying too? How old are your chucks?

Typically chickens are supposed to moult towards the end of summer, but it's possible that they're moulting early - although obviously not if they aren't losing any feathers! :-\ If both hens were recently laying eggs, watch their behaviour to make sure they aren't egg bound as that can be deadly. Constantly going into the nest box to try and lay, then coming back down after laying nothing, can be a sign of a hen being egg bound.

Sometimes a hen will have a few days rest from laying eggs, just keep an eye on them. Make sure they are eating and pooping regularly, and let us know how they get on :)

    Thanks Red

I brought my hens last August at pol, so they are not that old. Goldie only normally lays every couple of days anyway because she lays big normally double yolk egss, specks lays little ones and she is the one that has stopped, i have noticed today that her feathers look very scraggy so am thinking she is having her mault? i also noticed yesterday that there was an empty egg like sack with mucus on the lawn and am presuming this has come from specks, but this would hopefully mean she is not egg bound. They are deffinately eating and pooping runny poo quite normal. What do you think?
    Regards Jo

I am the Queen of the Universe...my niece and nephew were taught from a young age to say 'Please Gill, wonderful Gill, Queen of the Universe' if they wanted anything. They still do, even at 19 and 21. Indoctrination's a wonderful thing. Unfortunately they're now too big to go up my chimney...they were quite useful for that...

    Keeper of the hens

Joanne - yup, sounds like Specks could be starting her moult early. Those eggs are normal when chickens are just beginning / ending a laying season or moult...Tilly once managed to stand on and and was walking around with it on her foot like her slipper :-\ :rolling:

Also, seeing as they're quite young that could be another reason why Specks has her moulting time slightly wrong. First year we had Milly, she started her moult in November and was bald for most of December! Sounds like they are okay, and i also love the way you have slipped runny poo onto the end of there :D

© You can go to Word, then open "Insert," then open "Symbols," and copy it from there.

I wasn't talking about that though. I was wondering if you could hold a copyright under an other-than-legal name; such as Chief Chicken. Or, is there something you haven't told us...

Diane, my little Jack Russell terrier Snizzel only burps (a lot)too..it's the first dog I've had that didn't emit a green fog. It's been great not chocking to death at night, trying to watch TV with a dog beside me emitting a fowl smelling fog. My eyes have stopped watering...I can actually SEE the tv shows I'm trying to watch.

Hmmm. Lynn - its interesting that if it comes out the front, it doesn't come out the back. Holly did have a gassy day once though. In my office, while I was seeing clients. She has a blanket behind my chair. At first I tried to ignore it (as well as my watering eyes) and just keep on working. But soon I was actually having to gasp. And then I began to care that my client didn't think it was me... :jumping: So-I interrupted the session (well, sessions -this scenario repeated itself for a few hours) to discuss the matter.

Hideous. I don't like hideous things particularly - but I love it when that's how someone describes something they feel upset by.
