    Keeper of the hens

Yes, tomorrow is Respect For Chickens Day. We will be making a special meal for the chickens :-\ , and the big girls can have a cream cake too - the chicks can have a little bit, but it's a bit too sweet and sugary for them.

Also, I PROMISE that somebody (either me or my dad) will post the most beautiful, fantastic photos of the chicks and chickens that we have in this thread tomorrow, because it is Respect For Chickens Day. If anyone else has any brilliant photos of their chickens they want to post, please do! And if anyone else is giving their chucks a special treat, feel free to post and tell us about it :)

And finally, for the people who are chicken-less (that is they have no pet chickens :P ) you could post pics of yourself or your pets that have respect for chickens...hope this makes sense :o :D

Anyway, have a great day tomorrow :-\

Danny and Rachael came to visit on Thursday with Caitlyn. He text me before he arrived to say they'd bought me a hen and 2 chicks. (His friend works at Melbicks where they had the silkies).

I didn't know where to home them so tried out a few places. Let me introduce you first - this is hen-momma and left and right chicks:

I don't have a coop so wondered if she'd get on with Penny, Milly and Tilly. Here she is out for a stroll with them:

    And touring the coop:

Again, its a bit big for them so they'll have to just stay on the computer table and remind me about hencam and respect for chickens day!!!

Sorry - its a pretty awful photo. Who knew - too much light in Seattle... (Well, Whidbey.) Maya actually looks like a calico (instead of the solid black kitty that she is.) It was just such an amazing moment and I had to scramble to capture it at all...

Plus, what is up with Photobucket? Its not resizing my pics even after the nearly 20 minutes I spent trying to get their 'new and improved' editing system to do something. Sob.

Kate ~ Those are blimmin fantastic, had such a laugh looking at those pics :D And i didn't realise how small your new chucks are, they must be tiny! What're the chicks - a girl and a boy? Two girls? :)

Diane, that's a great photo! I love the dog's (Holly's - is that her name??) expression :rolling:

And CC, nevermind it's the thought that counts - did you MAKE the rice things, maybe that's why the chooks won't touch 'em! :fingersear:

And i don't know what happened to our pics of the chickens...SOMEBODY was supposed to post 'em on Sunday because i was at a Pigeon Detectives gig (which was amazing) but obviously the didn't. Photobucket does seem to be rubbish lately, so maybe that's why they haven't been posted? I'll see if i can find them..

    Keeper of the hens

They're still cheeping, but they have to honk before they can cluck - honking is the funniest stage ever!

They're not Rhode Island Reds, they're not dark enough - RIRs are a very dark almost red colour (well, duh, i guess that's why they're called Reds :-\ ), whereas these have a few brown feathers but the rest are a kind of golden-y colour, and they have white feathers tpp. Sunny's paler than the others, and she almost looks like she could be Luca's sister - they have the same facial expressions too! :P

They're possible Golden Comets, which is a nice name tag for them, but we don't really know yet. They could be a random breed, Rhode Island Reds crossed with something...

Maybe the chicks will grow up to be famous singers, and that pic will be on their album cover? :D

I wasn't sure where to put this, but it's a cute little story about roosters. I was wondering why rooster's crow, and if it's just to guard the flock or if there are other reasons, so i did some research on BYC and this came up:

"They crow triumphantly when they think they chase something away, a person, a predator or another roo; they crow to communicate with other roos, to call to the hens, because they're happy to be alive and it's a nice day; and a million other reasons..."

    How cute is that? :-)

CC, does Onion crow a lot?

He crows in the morning (still knows when it's light, even when he's banged up in the coop in the dark), crows if he hears me, and crows if the kids are shouting (in the school grounds around the house), crows if Livia has laid an egg and occasionally crows just for the hell of it.

Bless 'im!Been waiting for one of the boys to crow lately now they're learning to cluck. The BO boys didn't crow until they were about twelve weeks old, but Scotty has already crowed once so i don't think it'll be too long.

Hopefully they'll wait until they're on the farm (or wherever) until they start to crow :D

The chicks slept outside last night too, which is a major event :cheer:

Red-glad they stayed out last night...that's a good thing. Two of my boys are crowing. At first we couldn't figure out what the noise was...it was so scratchy and funny sounding. This morning I went in to wake them (yes I wake them) and after they were awake they started to cock a doodle do! So in a matter of about a week, they have gotten much better. They still aren 't real loud which is good because they are still in the house! ;-)

Well, it's come around again everybody, International Respect For Chickens Day!!
(forget Star Wars day, it's all about the chickens!)

I'm not sure what we'll be doing with the chickens tomorrow, as I'm heading back to Keele tomorrow so aren't sure how much time I'll have with them. However I'm sure we can buy them their favourite snacks from the local shop and maybe whip up a tasty treat for them too!

Hope all you lot with chucks will be treating them too, and feel free to post photos of your pet chucks enjoying their day! If you don't have chucks, feel free to post pics of your pets - the more the merrier! ;)

Hi there and a Happy International Respect for Chickens Day. My girls had a cheese sarni's for their elevenses and for lunch it was grapes, oats and seeds. Their afternoon tea consisted of marmite sarni's, finely shredded mixed greens with petite pois. Supper is two wafer thin slices of salami each. It did rain in the morning but by the afternoon the sun shone and although it was rather windy and cold they had a very nice day. Goldie Corn and Victoria Peckham check out the cat kennel for size

Couldn't speak to the fish however, as they were all at the bottom after a visit from the heron this morning. All fish are present and correct I must add.

I'm glad someone else knows about Star Wars day Red!

I don't have chickens so have posted a picture of Emmett, my eldest cat, enjoying the empty tub of catnip.

It was really strong! My son's partner bought it for her cats and asked me to make them some cat nip bags. Emmett and my other cat, Foggy, both drooled all over the pot before it was even open. I have a whole series of photos of Emmett trying to squash her head into the tub!

I hate to say it, NN, but Sootz looks outraged at having been a victim of the paparazzi...

Actually, they had all the crumbs (and there were a lot!) and thoroughly enjoyed them!

Today - the 5th - is The International Day of the Midwife.

I have been sending messages of encouragement to midwives where midwifery is dire.

    Happy IDotM, Ollie! :D
NN, I've had Onion since 2005 (I think) originally with Sage (who was cream coloured) but the bl**dy fox got her. So now I have Livia and Onion (and their offspring, Gravy, lives about 7 miles away and has 2 big wives who beat him up but love him...:D).

Oh poor Sage how awful for her. I always worry about the foxes. We don't see that many but I know they are about as I hear them at night sometimes. When we lived in London there were loads of them and it wasn't unusual to see them during the day time. Gravy must look a bit like a Bernie Ecclestone chicken but with two tall wives instead of one Ha ha sorry Bernie......ummm come to that sorry Gravy

Yes Red, that is Victoria Peckham she is well named as she walks about with her beak up in the air. She hates having a fuss unlike the others. I was well amazed the other day as she had a mud bath and looked a right state afterwards. Normally she doesn't have a feather out of place and is always a lot cleaner than the others. Funny thing is they didn't have a mud bath, spos she was setting a new style or something. I will probably have to get her some super sized sunnies come the summer !!!!!!! :milly_hen:
