I read yesterday that Sienna Miller is in a film due out soon that's based in the 60s. The paper said that "as a modern girl" she was very particular about personal grooming and hair removal, so for the nude scenes they considered using a merkin but decided to alter "it" digitally instead. I'd never seen the word used in the press before!

Wow! Why the anti-American sentiment on the forum. It’s sort of a deterrent for those who are not British to want to join in the forum.
I now feel rather bad that I made such a large donation to HenCam.
However, I do wish the best to Neil and his family and hope Neil has a very pleasant stay on his business trip to Florida.

With hindsight maybe Ronald is right to slate us for using the term merkins for...well...merkins. So, I suggest that we globalise the word to include all or at most as many as we can into the merkin way... Germany's primemininster is a merkin I think..Angela Merkin! There thats the Germans. Sienna Miller is British and she is going to wear a Merkin so thats us...

    Keeper of the hens

Ronald, there is no anti-American feeling, honest! We have loads of American members here on the forum - don't be offended, please! CC's right, we're just taking the mick...it happens quite a lot on the forum, along with going off topic and terrifying Diane by mentioning Runny Poo ;)

As for my dad's business trip, we heard from him tonight and he's going to Universal Studios today - lucky him! Apparantly the weather is boiling (although it's pretty hot here for a change!) and i'm so jealous to think he's flitting round on rollercoasters and other rides right now...

Welcome to the forum Ronald ~ We're a very friendly bunch once you get to know us, and nobody ever sets out to cause offence :)

Ronald please don't leave!! I'm an American and I think I started the whole thing. I was feeling irritated one day because I believe that G Bush fakes his southern accent and his voice had been on the news a lot and it was hurting my ears because I think that. (I know it may not even be true, its just how it sounds to me.) A couple of other people agreed and then we started using the term "Merkin" in play.

Cake is completely innocent as she is newer and didn't even know what we were talking about until just now. Well, she's not innocent, but of THIS she is. :D

I'm hoping you will stay Ronald. We do tend to tease each other about everything under the sun on here. But I can't recall one 'flame-war' or anything that felt like the person was trying to be mean.

As they've already said Ronald, its the British sense of humour for you! What you're supposed to do is insult us back but in an amusing dig-dig way. We've long ago established that some things don't translate well between countries but are always happy to explain them away.

This is the friendliest forum I've ever been on - we like to wander off topic, its part of the appeal, and its very rare that the moderators have to step in (I think it happened once!) We have struck up some very strong on-line friendships too - hang around and give us a chance!!

Well, he had to go over there originally because he's designed / built some sort of computer program that the Acorn team in America are using BUT because my dad designed it they don't know how to use the program...so my dad got a free holiday to Florida just to show them how it works!! And seeing as they were over there they thought it would be a shame not to visit any of the theme parks :-\

Vicki, that's well cool. My only claim to fame is i once sat on Hunter's lap when i was about five and he gave me a kiss :rolling: (Hunter was a gladiator from that amazingly good show Gladiators about 10+ years ago)

There was a lake with alligators in behind the house we were staying in. when it was dark Neil asked if i wanted to go for a walk. We got torches and went out and walked by the lake and neil said joking, look out for alligators! We shone our torches at the lake and Then there was a splash and all these bushes in the water moved right by us!

We turned and ran we thought it was going to get us. I was only little so i was running as fast as i could and neil just left me because he was faster! He ran off to the house and waited for me outside and we were so scared we just stood there laughing.

LOL - I can't believe Joe ratted Neil out about leaving him with the alligator. And Neil not even here to defend himself. It sounds like Joe still has some 'issues' about it all. ;)

Speaking of Neil, I hadn't realized you do the same thing my Dad did! The only trip we got to go on when he had to show people how to use one of the systems he designed was to a very dusty camp ground near, is it ... Bear Lake, Big Bear, something about a bear in California. That computer was responsible for opening and closing a dam.

So Vicki, your mom (oops) saw the Governor of California then. LOL

CC - I think Dawn French has been playing you for sometime. That's an excellent choice. So ... who plays the rest of us? Lets see: Wazza-Dennis Waterman (is that his name?), Kate-Felicity Kendall, Lynn-Demi Moore, Ollie-Judy Dench, Neil-Johhny Depp, Helen-Mary.Louise Parker, Janice-Sally Fields. And, of course, Milly-Tilly-Penny would play themselves. As for the rest of you~I don't know the names of any actors under 25 for some reason...

As for Gladiators - the old series was better but Spartan - phwoar!! He's lovely! (And yes, I think its very similar to the US version).

Many many thanks CC.

Ooo, still haven't taken it. Went to Ikea this evening and just got back. Will do though!

Thanks for all the good wishes for Danny. He's turned out OK thankfully! He's also a great dad - Caitlyn adores him and calls him Dad-dad now. I'm sure she said Nanan too (momomomom has been around for a while!) Dad-dad also sounds like grandad so we're all happy!!!!

Remember when it used to be a fan belt or a radiator that caused a car to break down? Now its the darn key?!!!

Nancy, I have no idea. Apparently, an odd freak radio wave can wipe the key's memory! So you point it at the car to get it, and the car just flashes its lights at you and does nothing. So because - luckily - it's a convertible and I'd left the roof down, I was able to get a tall chap to lean over and open the door so at least I had somewhere to wait for the AA - and could get my yuppiephone which lives in the car, so I could CALL the AA. Anyway, the local Merc garage were far from delighted to have a wild-haired, wild-eyed hoyden in a tatty vest full of holes shedding stone dust all over their posh reception...
You're so right, Kate; with the Morris Minor, at least I knew roughly what was wrong with it and could probably have a stab at fixing or, if it was something big, you could SEE what the problem was, even if it wasn't fixable. To be outwitted by a poxy ignition key...! :\

    You called Alcoholics Anonymous?
And you live in an area where you can leave a cell phone in an open car?
Tell me you at least had a silky purple scarf on!

Oh its the AAA for the US and CAA for me. How can a radio wave wipe a key's memory. Isn't the key just a piece of metal? and the key hole is a bunch of metals put together? or is there a different system of opening cars in the UK? I'm confuzzed:|

It's the Automobile Association. Although God knows I could have used a drink large enough to excite the interest of Alcoholics Anonymoous after that to-do. Yes, I leave my telephone in an open top car - but tucked away out of sight. The key is electronic and therefore STUPID. The car is controlled by a STUPID computer...we ought to go back a decade or so if you ask me. I didn't have a purple anything on, i had a ratty holey old vest which I wear for carving, and I was covered in stone dust. The receptionist at the Merc garage couldn't get rid of me quick enough...:\
ANYWAYS up, all sorted now, and Arfur has been soundly ticked off for letting me down. I rather think there was a sheepish note to his engine...he's evidently sorry.

Think I have had an overload of company lately.
As a 'loner' I relish my own company.
School holiday now, so I have g'daughter all weekdays, though at 10years old she is outside a lot with her mates - or they are all inside with me! A spot of baking usually passes the time well.

I think it is important that children learn about baking and cooking. The ready made stuff in the shops isn't as nutritous as it could be. Nothing like home made stuff, even if it takes more effort it is generally cost cutting too.
Don't know about the carbon footprint though.

I had Caitlyn overnight. She was really good. The doc has given her an inhaler though because she's very 'chesty' all the time as if she's full of snot (sorry!) but it does seem to help. She slept from 11pm til 8.30am. Wish mine had been that good!

My little girl Sally was lik ethat all the time. She needed her Adenoids removing and grommits in her ears. I didnt notice her speech was bad for ages. Then we noticed her hearing was really bad. Poor thing couldnt talk properly cos couldnt hear properly. She had op and is wonderful now. Took her a while to adjust to certain things. She was amazed by the fact her cereal made a Snap Crackle and Pop noise and when she flushed the chain she used to run out with her fingers in her ears!! She satill has an inhaler and anti histemine but is fine now and is growing out of it all. She still sniffles quite a bit and we get lots of sneezes first thing in a morning.
I am jabbering so gonna stop now! Not even sure if on topic or what. Doh,
