Be carefully with fish in such a small volume of water. Insulate it thickly and try keep it in a frost free area.
Lost my fish one winter to frost in a round bath. Read somewhere that you can put bubble wrap on top too, just leave a little space for gases to escape. Anyway, I know you will be reading it all up.

What kind of fish are you getting? I had ones that would eat the mosquito larvae too.

    Keeper of the hens

    I know CC, can't wait! :D

Thanks for the tips Ollie! So sad you lost all your fish. Yes, it was a real struggle to find a 'pond' deep enough...all research has said pond must be a minimum of 50 - 60cm deep so that if it ices over in winter the fish are to survive and it's too deep to completely fill with ice. Also read to put a small ball or two on top of the water before it freezes, as that keeps an area unfrozen and allows air circulation!

I'm hoping we'll have a very mild winter again, we got practically no frost or ice last year and NO SNOW! Haha and although I love proper chilly winters like we get in Yorkshire, it'd be safer for the fish if it was milder

Does the round shape make the fish more susceptible to cold? We have the 'pond' in a corner by the shed too, so hopefully that will help.

I think we're getting two bog standard goldfish and two comets. I read that fantails / orandas don't do very well in ponds...? And as they don't swim as fast the others will scoff all the food before they get any!!

Already thinking about names though... :tooth:

I did want a shubunkin or two (instead of two goldfish / comets) but the pet shop doesn't have any :( And we really want to use this pet shop as their fish have always seemed really healthy, clean tanks, the staff are lovely and it's our local...oh, AND they have a 10 week old Lab puppy that we got to say hi to the other day!!

Been meaning to post this for ages, we saw a Bittern the other day. It was awesome; the tide had flooded the road and as we were turning back Lyle just happened to see it on the far side of the river.

I like the bats and ghosts that are flying across the forum too :tooth:

There are 888,246 of them; one for every British and Colonial serviceman (and women, but not many) who died in the First World War. Look up 'poppies Tower of London' on google images, Lynn. They filled the moat of the Tower, and people queued for ages to see them. It was incredibly touching and beautiful. The poppies were then sold in aid of the British Legion who support serving and ex-servicemen and women. We wear poppies every 11th of November to remember everyone in wars everywhere. After the battles in France and Belgium the churned up mud was covered in poppies which seeded themselves there.

Oh definitely, they love destroying them! Must be nice not having to constantly replace toys and have a dog who just snuggles them instead though :tooth:

My best; spent Boxing Day with our friends whose dog died suddenly in November leaving them devastated. And today we met Louis, their newly adopted ten-month old rescue border collie. Two happy people, one happy dog.

Sounds like a lovely day CC :)

Someone was giving away a 10 week old Border Collie puppy for free...Lyle had to practically hold me down to stop me from adopting him!! You gotta stop somewhere though, but man I would have loved to have taken that little pup in... :001_rolleyes:

Aww... too bad Lyle wouldn't let you get the Border Collie, Red. They are great dogs. Frodo is smarter than I have been giving him credit for. Yesterday Don was down in the shop and he knocked the stove pipe off the stove, the shop filled with smoke. Frodo grabbed Don's pants leg and tried to pull him out of the building twice. The dog was smarter than Don.:face-smile:

    Frodo's a super-dog! What a GOOD BOY! :)

Kasper's half Border Collie and he sure displays a lot of their characteristics...endless energy, very quick to pick things up (mind you so is Zoey), used to herd things when younger before we worked on training...

I really want to raise a Collie from a puppy though :tooth: Kasper is a tricky dog to own because of how his first 9 months were, I'd love to harness that Collie energy into really positive things from the start, and really nail socialisation...A Border Collie is definitely on my want list!

Along with a Chihuahua, Papillion, JRT, Yorkshire Terrier, Whippet (or a cross of any of these breeds with something else!)...oh and another dinky Staffy would be lovely
    :001_rolleyes:

And one day I'd loooove a Rottie, but they're a little on the large side! :rolling:

Oh I forgot a best from the other day, I successfully won the trust of a wild pigeon  Our train was delayed 20 minutes and there was a scaredy pigeon hovering around, so I started throwing food to him and gradually coaxing him closer and closer. By the end he was eating from my hand and landing on our bag - he actually tried to land on my shoulder at one point hahahaha! I was in love :rolling:

I know most people loathe pigeons but I'm a huge pigeon fan...I got some blurry pics, if they're not too terrible I'll share

Forgot a best earlier in the week: I took Caitlyn to the pictures on Tuesday to see Tinkerbell and the Netherbeast (she loves fairies). We had a really nice nanny/granddaughter day! I loved the Netherbeast - he sort of reminded me of a Rottweiler with a big wide mouth. And that reminds me that I watched the film John Carter on TV last week - film was slated originally as he's a civil war soldier who gets transported to Mars - but he also had a pet/beast that was rottie/lizard like with a big mouth, slobbery tongue and cute!

I have a great 'best' today! Hubby told me he'd rescued a sparrow from Seven and Tabby that were chasing it around the garden, catching it, then letting go to catch again. He'd tried to chase them off but Seven had brought it into the house, so it gave him the opportunity to pick it up. He put it on the outside kitchen windowsill, but it fell/jumped off and sat in front of the front door by the mat so asked what I wanted to do about it.

Turned out it was a pretty little wren not a sparrow. I picked it up and it was very quiet so I put it in a small box (ironically it was a felix cat food box!) with kitchen roll on the bottom and a balled up piece at the side, then put it in the cupboard in our bathroom. I got it out about 20 mins later and it looked a bit brighter, so I went in my son's bedroom, opened the window, and as the fresh air reached the bird it flew out of the box and landed on my arm which I quickly stuck out the window and away it flew! Birds 1 Cats 0!

That was cool that you were able to revive the little bird, Kate. Sometimes all they need is a little heat to make them feel better.

It's usually stress that kills them rather than anything else, so I just hoped that a bit of safe, quiet time would give her/him chance to regain some strength and become calm. It can work the other way where putting them in a box scares the bejesus out of them! Just glad it was a good outcome this time.
