Hi everyone, I'm opening this forum to get some fresh insight and ideas for a TOK essay I have to write for the IB program. The topic I have to explore is "the knowledge that we value the most is the knowledge for which we can provide the strongest jusification". So basically why we believe or dont believe that knowledge with good justification is the best knowledge. It would be great if you could share personal experiences for this topic! thanks so much:)

Is it like people believe in things that are easily proveable, whereas if there's no proof people believe it isn't true? So for example people thought the Earth was flat until science proved it otherwise? Or is that totally wrong...i'm confused  :D

no no thats right red. And like some people believe in religions that are not proven by anything but yet they value that knowledge whereas some people only value knowldge that are proven by many facts. The question is suppose to be so confusing that you can write a 1600 word essya on it. I'm getting close...:|

My son believes in aliens and life on other planets, yet won't believe that we've landed on the moon. How does that one fit?!! Its because he saw a programme that tried to show the moon landings were faked, and even though there was another one disproving that one, he chose to go with the 1st one. I think its because he sees the evidence of it being faked as stronger than that of it being genuine, and as aliens has never been disproved, he's willing to believe it. Odd son!

    Keeper of the hens

I believe animals are just as intelligent as humans - some more so - and are capable of thoughts and feelings. I guess my proof for this is watching how animals communicate with each other and interact, and the way they can learn commands such as 'sit' 'jump' etc, even though we're speaking a different language to them. Although i've read about scientific experiments into animal intelligence too, which could be counted as 'facts' i guess.

What about consipracy theories? Could you write about them for this essay? Even though people were given 'facts' about an event, they chose to disregard them and do their own research to make up their own minds on what happened...

Belief in something which can't be proved (like a religion) is a faith, surely?
BTW, I agree with you, Red; people's assumption that we are the 'superior' species really gets my goat. It's not as though we would consider someone who couldn't speak unintelligent, is it? And animals manage to understand bits of our language, whereas we are complete wazzocks in comparison!

I work in infection control - I've just had to look at the notes of patients that have had CDIFF - clostridium difficile - which causes really really really bad diarrhoea. Usually because the patient has either taken antibiotics that have sparked it off, or been in contact with someone else who has it. Therefore every patient has had runny poo incidents!

I gave it my boss to have a first look at and she found a mistake on the front cover! Apparently CDIFF has to be written in a particular way - italicised and capitalised first word. When abbreviated it should be C.diff. Don't hold out much hope for the rest of it now!!

It is very reassuring to me that she is so near, also very handy for grand daughter care.

The cats sometimes come round with family members to visit but this week the blue one has started coming on his own.

I'm really liking that cat. :D

Ollie the 'quote button incident' reminded me of a story about an IT person trying to help a woman over the phone with a computer problem she was having. He said: Right mouse click on (something or other.) She said: Ok. He said: What do you see now? She said: Nothing. He said: Right mouse click again. She said: Ok. After a number of cycles of this, he said: I'm coming over. When he arrived, he looked at her computer screen and saw "Mouse Click" written about ten times. :loco:

I know exactly how that woman needing help feels.

My friend was teaching someone to use a pooter and told her to click on an icon. So the pupil duly picked up the mouse, placed it on the screen and clicked...
