This post is to say hello when Milly, Penny & TIlly's humans come on cam.

Everybody say "Hi" to Neil as he moves some wires around on cam right now :D

Hi to Neil and Red , even though I've not seen you on cam in several days. My schedule has been different lately and I have been sleeping late in the mornings and Neil and Red are usually through feeding the chickens by the time I get up. But last time I saw Red , she had a colorful towel on her lap and she was petting Milly and talking to her. Soooooo sweet. I have not seen Helen yet since I began watching Hencam but maybe she will be on sometime too and I can say hello.

I think if we ever see Helen; it might be a sneezing Helen - as I believe she is allergic to all beings feathered & furred.

    Keeper of the hens

I try and feed the hens / move the camera at 8am (GMT) - although Scarlet's done it the last few days.

Night time is usually about 6pm - 6:30pm (GMT) - although (don't get too excited now!), you will be able to see me on Saturday morning trying to fix the coop's door as the bottom hinge has fallen off the frame - it's been getting harder to open the door for a bit and it's eventually given up.

So prepare for some unexciting views of me scratching my head, tightening screws and swearing a lot!

    Cheers

    Neil

Not me - only place I've been is Holland and the Isle of Man. Not a well travelled person I'm afraid! Hopefully will visit more places when I get my independence from the kids!!! (er, they're 23 and 20 so don't know when that's likely to be!!!)

Heh, it was me.... Did you hear Penny complaining loudly when I accidentally stood on her foot (oops!) - I couldn't even cuddle her better as she's the one that doesn't like to be picked up (oooops!) - I did give her some lettuce as a way of apology.

Poor Milly is shedding all her feathers right at the time it's become very cold here - and Scarlet gave her a cuddle the other day and Milly cried as her new feathers hurt when they're touched :(

    Poor things!

Ahh poor things. I noticed there were a lot of white feathers on the floor this week and was glad to see Milly still happy and in one piece! Welcome back - you've been missed!

Ooooo - I'm REALLY glad I didn't notice those feathers. Heart failure time. Poor birdies moulting is such an odd trick of nature.

Hi Red - out in the coop doing (hmmm am for me so then - pm for you...) evening chores. Farm woman that you are. Looks like its no longer summer there - did I spy mittens?

Well, as you sort out the coop for the night across the pond, I'm going to get into something warmer than pjs and take Holly to a beach called Double Bluff (because...drum roll; it has two bluffs) and meet a friend for a walk.

Oooooo - dark hen with head inside pumpkin. What a delight this season must be for them. They have changed that one pumpkin's face into a look that makes my stomach clench up. Freaky.

And there's a close up of the back of Milly's head. So, are the seeming dark feathers actually feather spikes???

Milly has her head turned away tonight and the back of her head does look very odd - like there's a plume of feathers there. Is it just a deceptive angle? How come Penny isn't maulting if the other 2 are?

    Keeper of the hens

Aw Diane, if you saw me putting the water tanker back in that means you must have just missed me giving Milly her daily cuddle - she was really cute yerterday, too, and kept trying to 'groom' my hoodie :)

The plume of feathers you saw are probably Milly's spines - they jut out from her skin in a way that fully formed feathers don't. The spines on her neck, where the white and black feathers will eventually be, are dark blue in colour. When Tilly and Penny moult they are covered in dark indigo spikes because of their black feathers, whereas the spikes for white feathers are a pinky colour. Milly has a selection of both colours, although the majority of the spikes are pink.

And Kate, Tilly moulted about a month or two ago, Penny has just finished moulting and her feathers are now mostly grown, and Milly is just moulting and re-growing her feathers - after Milly is finished, the girls will be done for another year :)

Scarlet, is that fireworks I hear in the background, or do you live near a rifle range? I live next door to an Army base here in Washington state, it kind of sounds like the recoil from small arms fire to me, but it's hard to tell.

Rats! I would have loved to see Milly snuggling with her 'mom' :)

Hi Lynn - do you live near Cheney or Tacoma then? Or is there another one I don't know about. I live at the other end of the island from NAS Whidbey... So it just the buzzing of jets for us. (I think the sounds you hear are post Halloween firecrackers or the electronic interference noise that always there - although that usually sounds more like slurping to me.)

Hi Diane, I live between Ft. Lewis Army base and McChord Airforce base in Graham (just a wide spot in the road). When they play "War Games" my poor hens stop laying, pictures fall off the wall, my horses run around the field like mad. It's just too much fun (NOT). I grew up in Tacoma so I'm use to being blown up daily by heavy artillery, but my poor critters aren't.

    Hi Lynn,

yes we have all just been stood at the window watching the fireworks :D

There are some really beautiful ones quite close by, although the chickens don't seem too bothered by them.

People are having bonfires and letting off fireworks, seeing as this is the closest weekend to Bonfire Night - we're having fire & fireworks next weekend, which should be fun :)

Lynn that's very cool - we live less than 100 miles from each other. & with modern technology we can chat through a henhouse half a world away!

Its sounds like you have quite a farm. :)

It's only 5 acres, Diane ..with 2 horses and 24 chickens. I use to have a lot more critters, sheep and dairy goats, but it got to be too much, after my first husband died, for me to take care of, so I just keep horses and chickens, 3 dogs, 3 cats, a little macaw and fish in 2 ponds. Whidbey Island isn't very far at all from here, it's so beautiful up there, I envy you.

Five acres! I'm on a 1/4 of an acre and I can barely manage that! Only 2 cats, one dog (who goes to work with me) and 15 or so species of wild birds to looking to be fed in the front yard, oh - and one yard bunny (see the Photo Album) at my personal zoo. And THAT keeps me on the run. I bow to you :D

Yes, Whidbey is startlingly beautiful I think. Out on walks or at coffee with friends we often talk about what an amazing treat it is to live here. But I'm guessing any place with two fish ponds is pretty lovely!

Hey Neil. That football site is very nice. Well laid out, easy to travel and understand AND it has a really interesting copyright. :D I wonder exactly what people will make of a hencam copyright. Its funny to imagine.

I've never followed team sports. Now I find I finally have a team I can be a fanatic about! If my friends are babbling on about the Seattle Seahawks, I have something to say now: GO CULLINGWORTH!

    Thank you Diane!

On the job front I haven't left yet, in fact I'm sort of staying here - I had a heart-to-heart with my boss and we cleared the air. I still want more money though!

Poor Cullingworth, they're a new team and still getting to grips with the game so they haven't actually won a match yet! And to make matters worse there was a mistake on the order for their kit so it all proudly displays the team name "CULLINGSWORTH"!! I suspect they got a hefty discount!

They should get them for free if the mistake was the printers. Poor things - they'll have to find a new sponsor to get a new kit!
