I am getting my chickens in about 2 weeks and i was wondering if it is better to feed them pellets or mash.

I would think they would probably be ok with either, but to be safe I would say it depends what they're currently used to - the move to a new house AND feed they aren't used to might cause more stress...

I would just ask if they're on pellets or mash and try and give them the same. You can always try them on the other when they're happy and settled in.

Not too helpful I know, sorry :)

We usually feed our big girls a mix of corn and layers pellets. Feed them just corn they can get fat & won't lay as well, feed them just pellets and they can get bored & refuse to eat them. We've discovered that a bag of feed half corn and half pellets works well.

We did try mash for a while but found they didn't like it as much as dry food because they couldn't dig about in their feed bowls, or scatter it on the ground to peck about for. This might just be our chickens though, yours might prefer mash.

You'll end up with millions of bags of feed scattered around the place :D

Ours seem to do fine with corn and pellets. They peck out all the corn, scrat about on the floor for it, and then munch on their pellets. Whilst eating all the other treats they get... :-\

I can imitate chicken, but I don't know what I'm saying (a bit like a phrase in Polish I was taught which if said in polite society would start a riot).
There was a girl who could speak chicken, she was on the news a few months ago. I'm sure Red saw it and said something on the forum about it.

Ooh but Scarlet might be in the Telegraph and Argus in a few days!! I got a call just now from a reporter asking what I thought of Elvis, she is doing a story on his current troubles and so I told her how we loved him - and she'd seen the discussions on here about him!

Anyway, she asked if we could use the pic of Elvis and Scarlet so I said that Scarlet wouldn't mind (ahem!) :)

They also wanted to cover the new development of the extra cameras and views so they're coming to speak to us tomorrow, bless them!

I'm amazed; presumably Wilsden is the same as many other towns/villages and you have (to varying degrees) litter, vandalism, petty crime, speeding, general yobbery and misbehaviour. So; 'I know!! It's that macaw's fault. I'm going to report it.'
    Naughty Elvis. :\

Anyway. Having recovered; I've never seen a bad pic of you Red and the one with Elvis is really great. Just my opinion.

Do you think the article will help poor Elvis to stay free? It would be such a sad thing if his happy little life were to be changed by some person who could have been using their energy to help earthquake victims in China or something, rather than focusing on one sweet parrot flying free in Wilsden.

    Keeper of the hens

I once got bit by one of our rats (the last two boys we had, we were unable to hand-tame them and they were always vicious). He bit both me and my dad, and it hurt and bled a lot but it really wasn't that bad at all. And it didn't get infected, always a bonus! This is supposed to inspire confidence ;)

Is she nipping to be nasty? Or is she curious of the material your clothes are made from? We found if our rats found a material they liked they would chew or 'test' it with their teeth...we once had them out in my Grandma's living room, and thought they had gone to sleep behind a cushion on the couch. They weren't asleep, but busily chewing a hole in the couch!!

Have they started using their litter tray? And how is Patrick - Patrick was the one on antibiotics wasn't she, is she still on them? (looks like this is the new Rats thread ;) )

I'd never seen one like Molly either, but there's a forum on fancy-rats.com and a few of the avatars people use are similar to her. Everytime I look at her I can't help but think how cute she is!

I was mixing the meds in with a little bit of baby food which worked at first but they're wize to that now. I tried putting it on cake but they sussed that. At the moment I get a small piece of rich tea biscuit and gently syringe the meds onto the edge so that it soaks in. They both take it no problem on them!

Layers pelletts and corn is the way to go, although in the winter when its cold i do add boiling water to the pellets and put some cereals in, let it cool for a while until luke warm, it just helps keep the chill off my not so little feathered friends.
