I LOVE LOVE LOVE that photo, where Rob's eyes are huge, of Milly on his shoulder. Wow - she was so small. These are really great photos. It looks like they had a great time making them and that they love Milly too. Thanks to Rob & Mary. And thanks so much Red for posting 'em.

    Keeper of the hens

CC, it took about two days to tame her. After that she would follow you everywhere, or sit on the front of your shoe or your shoulder.

One time she got lost, and we were getting really worried. I stood by the wall in the garden and yelled her name at the top of her voice. I heard this answering cluck, so i shouted again and next thing i know she's appeared at the bottom of the wall, which is about 5 1/2ft high from where she was stood. I was about to climb down and get her when she flew up and landed on my shoulder, i've never been so relieved to see her in my life
    :heartsabove:

Ostrich Farm sold her to us for £5 as an 18 week old pullet, and we were chicken novices back then and believed them. It wasn't until we got back home and realised her beak was too small to eat the layers pellets that we realised she might not be quite as old as they said :D

Livia seems reluctant to come out of the hutch and bring Gravy with her; do you think she's trying to hatch the other 2 eggs? I haven't thrown 'em away as I don't want to interfere. I've given her and Gravy some food in her coop, but she doesn't seem to want to come out for it.
    Can hens get agoraphobia...?

    Keeper of the hens

Milly stayed on the nest an extra two days after the last chick hatched, she wouldn't even get off the nest for a poop instead she did them in the corner as far away from her chicks & eggs as possible. We moved the water & chicks crumbs into her so she wouldn't have to worry about it...

Has she gotten off the nest at all? If she thinks there's still a chance they might hatch she may refuse to get off, and you might need to put the food & water in the box with her if that's possible...?

She's been out today apparently - the whole family went on an outing to the rabit hutch! I put a little food in the coop with her before i realised that she'd been out (Eric saw them after I went to work) so she may still be trying to hatch the other eggs...? I dunno; they're a mystery to me!

What pet would you want most in the world?
I've always wanted a dog, a Bull Terrier to be exact :heartsabove: , but my mum's allergic to just about all animals...that's why we got chuckens to begin with, because they can live outside! Other than that i am restricted to small rodent-type pets, as they don't affect her allergies so much.

Five golden orfs. Two carp, about 4 or 5 inches long, same as the orfs. The carp have beautiful gold marking that looks like Japanese armour. Then there is BFG = Big Friendly Goldfish, who is about 7 inches long. Had that one about five years.

Ollie, I can't help you with the other fish but i know a tip for sexing goldfish. In the spring time, if the fish has small raised 'bumps' on top of its head then it is a male. I think all fish are difficult to sex, and some types you can only sex in certain seasons...

Here's that skydiving chicken video that I was talking about. I think its all illusion - you never actually see the chicken leaving Mother Earth, I don't think. Chickens and penguins in halters tho. It does look like the penguin went up in the air (the way its moving its wings.)

Ah, just found this on a site called "Shootonline.com"

Brown noted that the penguin, chicken and emu didn't actually fly in this spot. A prime challenge of the project, he said, was "how to seamlessly composite birds with hang gliders and still make it feel spontaneous, natural and observed." This meant that Brown had to capture the birds "enjoying flight" even though they weren't experiencing it. Brown and DP Tom Olgeirrson deployed camera angles that "while interesting, didn't stretch credulity," said the director. "The animal trainers worked with the birds for more than a week, suspending them in harnesses and getting them used to being in their rigs.

Thanks for linking that Diane, it's quite cute :) I'm confused though, did the penguin and chickens actually fly in the harnesses then? They seemed to be quite enjoying it if they did, especially the penguin!! But what about the emu - surely that wasn't really strapped to a harness? :o

Oh, and CC isn't hallucinating so don't decrease her meds! There's a pic of Patch peering over my hand looking at her cage, and she's about the same size as my palm :D

Wild - that "palm photo" wasn't there last time I came into this thread. That explains what you meant about P's looking at her nest then too. :)

It seems that the hens, penguins and emu were trained to harness (interesting idea - I wonder if you could take Milly for a walk around town...) but that the flying was all optical illusion. Although the two smaller birds were suspended from the harnesses for the shoot. The flying emu looked totally fake though, didn't it?

Yes, I thought that hen was very beautiful. Reminded me of Milly. And the red one of the chicks.

    Keeper of the hens

I was looking for some pics of Eva to send into the BHWT's "Gallery of Spoilt Hens" because you can email your own ex-battery hen pics in. Instead of finding Eva-pics, i found new-hen-pics! These are photos that range from the first day we got our chucks, to when Libby laid the first egg
I'm so chuffed to have found these, even though they aren't very good, because i'd totally forgotten about them! :cheer:

    Tilly & Libby
This is when we first put them into their nest box. Tilly is the one stood in the house bit, and Libby has her head poking out :)

    T, L & Penny hens!
    Penny has joined in :D

    in the coop
Here they are in their run, it looks like Libby is screaming at the camera

    Penny's beak
    Penny-hen with her cross-beak!

    Penny-hen
And again, with the other two in the background

    angry Tilly
    Tilly looking angry!

    first time out
Their first time outside, they all hid under the bushes and dug up grubs :boogie:

    all three together
It's a shame this is blurred, otherwise it would have been a great pic. Penny is in the lead, with Tilly staring towards the conifers and Libby closest to the camera

    first egg!!
And here is Libby's first egg :cheer:

    first egg in egg cup
    In an egg cup :)

Hope you enjoyed them. This was all BH (Before Hencam), too, which feels weird doesn't it?!

Thanks - It seems strange to think of a time before hencam doesn't it :rolling:

I call her orange feathers 'penny's mane' haha! Some chicks are born with cross-beaks, and are usually culled. We didn't realise she had one till a few days after we brought her back. When asking for advice one person told us to have her put down :o Obviously we said no, she was eating fine and wasn't in pain.

Well, a week later she was wiping slug gunk off her beak against a rock, and half of her beak just snapped off! Now she has a beautifully formed, perfect beak :)

    Keeper of the hens

In the photo where you can see her orange chest feathers, you can see that there is a crack going to the left side of her beak. That side had no nerves in it because it wasn't supposed to be there, so when it broke away it was just like when a nail snaps off - as long as you don't snap it too far down it doesn't hurt. And, luckily, the other side of her beak grew back and formed a healthy normal chicken beak.

I never realised how beautiful Penny's neck is and Tilly is the boss even then! I don't remember Libby - what happened to her? WAs she pre-Milly?

Oh no, Libby was the boss! Tilly might have looked big and angry, but she always knew she came second place to Libby.

Libby died from blood poisoning after becoming egg bound when she was a year old. She died in a cardboard box on the way to the vets...there was nothing we could do, i was at school and my dad was driving so nobody could even comfort her. She was a lovely hen.

Is there a reason why hens get egg bound?

Not really...things that make it more likely to happen are obesity, a diet with not enough calcium, no exercise, or it could be hereditary.

It's a pretty emergency situation, and unless you notice it almost immediately the outlook is bleak. We didn't notice it until it was far too late, Libby couldn't walk, plus we had no idea what to do or what was wrong. Chicken noobs :-\

What a great surprise! These are wonderful photos.

Like Kate, I had no idea of the full extent of the beauty of Penny's necklace. Wow. And I didn't realize that Tilly actually has a little color there too.

Its great to have some pictures of Libby on here.

So, if everyone just let cross-beaked chickens live, do you think that would happen with all the other hen's beaks?

I do recall hearing about Libby now that you've refreshed my memory. Are all 3 related - Libby, Penny and Tilly?

Thanks Diane :) Penny has always had more orange than the other two, then Tilly (who has quite a few lovely orange speckles) and then Libby who just had a few dotsscattered about. I'm not sure if that would happen to all cross-beaked chickens, or if we just got lucky. It's something to think about though, and most cross-beaked chickens manage perfectly fine as it is.

Yes Kate, L, T & P were three sisters we bought from a local farmer. We had no idea what breed they were, just went and bought them. We were lucky to get those three :)

L, T, &P are sisters?!? awww maybe thats why they seem closer to each other than to milly. So when Libby was the pecking head, Penny's role was like the Milly now? That explains Penny's continual pecking of Milly!

    Keeper of the hens

I just remembered i meant to post these pics of Midge and Sunny, but then i went on holiday...this is Midget and Sunny perched on top of their 'emergency' bed! It was built so that they could sleep inside and Midget would be able to crow all he wanted and the neighbours wouldn't get woken up. Obviously it didn't work - they flew on top of the bed, and then when I attached a roof they flew at it repeatedly until i took them outside because i thought they'd hurt themselves...they're not as stupid as they look :P

    Midget n Sunny escaping
I did think about just leaving them perched on top (we used to do that with Sunny when she was younger), but when i was upstairs i heard them walking across the dining room table...don't tell my mum! I did clean it afterwards... :rolling:

    Molly drinking
These're some pics of Molly, too :)

Red! I didn't know you had any dogs in your extended family. That's wonderful news. I think Holly 'n Ellie might like each other. Ellie has very tiny feet. What size of dog is she? (Holly is about 45 pounds - when I haven't been over feeding her...)

    Keeper of the hens

She must be going on ten years old now...she can't walk like she used to, we used to go on some really long hikes but now i take her on a short walk through the woods and she's jiggered :) And i wish i could take pics of Gravy CC, i'm dying to see him/her!

Diane, she's a border collie cross so she's medium size. She was trained by my Uncle's dad and is the most obedient dog i have ever met. That's why i love taking her out for walks so much, and she still gets those mad 5 minutes where she races about like she's a pup again before collapsing in the shade with a stick :P

It especially makes a nice change walking Ellie after I've been with a friend's dog who tries to attack anything that moves (including children) and pees all over you when he gets excited...lovely dog :fierce:

Eeww. I have shorts on and Maya, very concerned about getting some time with me in the evenings, has her ... well, she's sitting on my lap and her tail isn't tucked under her. She's peering lovingly into my eyes. Hate to move her but I can't stand it. Crossing some kind of inter-species boundary.

That's NOT what I opened this post to talk about. Its Ellie - I strongly believe in training a dog. Partly to fit into the human society they live in. But also, because they are pack animals and its the most fair thing for them. Ellie's a great old girl! Holly won't play with sticks. Maybe Ellie could teach her how.

Arggh. Maya is back. Gotta go!

A lab who, quite rightly, didn't see the point of fetching something for some fool who only threw it again. A bit like people only pick up toys that brats hurl out of prams for a finite number of times and then realise the brat is kicking their bucket. Only Ben was quicker on the uptake.
