    Ha, that's funny!

She's our little baby girl; it feels like we've had her forever. She's one of the most chilled easy to manage rodents in the world, I would recommend Dwarf Hamsters to anyone who wanted a small, friendly, practically smell-free pet.

I bought the most amazing shoes every today...they are the shoes of my dreams! Lyle says I'm a saddo for taking (and posting) photos of them but I don't care because they are miney miney mine!!

I saw them size 9 1/2 at first and said "I have to get those - I'll just stuff paper in the ends!!" Then I saw them in 6, so tried them on and they fit! Lyle asked what price they were, but I didn't dare look so just said I was getting them no matter what the price...Lyle said he'd look for me, and was chasing me around the shop trying to see the label with me going "Noooo I'll find out at the till!!" :rolling:

They're a lot better than the pics show, they're a slightly different colour and they have blue tartan bits on too!

Yeah, it was vegan cheese and sausage. Linda McCartney's are vegan too actually, as are their country pies!

However, whilst we're on the subject, some breaking news here...
I think I'm going back to being veggie and not vegan anymore!!! :gasp:

I've been thinking it every now and then for the past few months now, so it's not something I've decided spur of the moment. And I've had long discussions with Lyle. Being vegan just doesn't do anything for me anymore; it doesn't make me happy, it makes me frustrated - one reason being that vegan food at supermarkets is still pricey. All there ever is for me to choose from are terribly tasteless bean burgers filled with peas and sweetcorn :ack2: I'll stick to the soya milk simply because I hate cow-milk, but I'll have it in chocolate etc. And free range eggs only of course :001_rolleyes:

But, um...yeah, after being vegan 16 - 22 this is scary

I don't know how long it'll last; I might really not like it and switch back, but we'll see!

Studies show that vegans have longer life expectancies than veggies, who have longer life expectancies than meat eaters...but yeah, veggie is A LOT easier! I like going to shops and actually being able to choose nice things to eat!

I'm not doing too bad so far...most things taste really acky so I'm eating a little a day to get me used to it, but some stuff (such as coleslaw!) just taste oh so nice!!

Lyle is veggie isn't he? It'll make it easier to cook the same for both of you and budget has got to be a biggie for you. For someone who doesn't understand all the intricacies, why is coleslaw veggie not vegan? Is it eggs? (I don't eat coleslaw so don't know what's in it!)

Yes, Lyle's veggie too. It's not the actual price of the vegan food that bothers me, I don't mind paying more, I happily paid £1.99 for a large vegan choc chip cookie many times! It's just that I'm paying almost double the amount Lyle is, and the food is horrible, really basic, stuffed with peas and sweetcorn...but if I were to buy things I like they'd easily cost 4x as much as Lyle!

And then there's the effort of cooking it, to prepare a tasty meal full of all the vitamins I need, it takes hours! Lyle can just cook veg, mash some spuds and bung a steak in the oven!

I've had yoghurt, cookies and battenburg now that are tasty...oh and cheesy pasta and garlic bread! I've been missing out on tasty food for far too long

*edit to add* I think it's egg (mayo type stuff?) and cream / milk in coleslaw...

I've had a good food day today; a jam donight (drool), animal biscuits (haven't had them in years and they're just as tasty!), kitkat, chicken nuggets, sausages, and ravioli!

And for price comparison, 4 chicken burgers for £1 as oppose to a tiny pack of vegan chicken pieces (that are really hard to find - vegan 'chicken' products are very rare) for £3.99 :001_rolleyes:

All these "products" seem very confusing to me! Especially ones that are veggie/vegan but made to look alike meat! Why the pretence?
Manufactured and packeted foods cost such a vast amount.
I'm not veggie or anything but eat very little meat as it always seems awkward to cook. Love fresh fish when I can get some, I freeze salmon.
Winter sees me tucking into stir fry with some kind of (tinned) mixed beans or chick peas. While summer I have lots of what I call "Chopped salad" = anything cut up smallish with whatever protein is in the cupboard.
I should eat more eggs than I do. Cheese doesn't agrre with me in any quantity.
I wouldn't pay lots of money for foods of particular diet when they are made from simple ingredients.

I know some people can't get their heads around "if you want to eat veggie burgers why not just eat meat burgers?" - but it's convenience - if it's something you (and others) are used to preparing and is an easy and simple substitute, then it fits a requirement, especially if you are not eating meat because you don't want to eat murdered animals. I mean, who cares if a veggie option has fake skin, eyes and a mouth - it's more than likely being eaten because of what it's not, more than what it is.

We just found it easy to incorporate veggie options in whatever we made for tea, whether it be quorn mince or cauldron veggie sausages. Even veggie bacon, though that's like eating coloured shoe soles!

Because it's fun and makes veggies / vegans seem more 'normal'! It's also nice to have such variety and meal choices. Plus, otherwise you have to make them yourselves, which takes a lot of time and is VERY hard to include the right nutrients and vitamins. You should have seen my home-made vegan meals to make sure I ate what I needed!! And just because I don't eat dead animals doesn't mean I don't love the taste of chicken nuggets!!!

I don't see vegan/veggie folk as abnormal any more than eg., Japanese, who eat food that you mostly can't tell what it is by just looking at it.

I think the phrase "Eating dead animals" is more likely to put me off too. When I eat fish it does occur to me what a dreadful death they had.

I was listening to a radio programme with a woman who thought it was OK to shoot pheasants that had been bred for the sport but it is cruel to shoot wild ones!

Helen also made a good point - she became veggie not on compassionate grounds but solely because she didn't want to run the risk of contracting Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease when it was all over the news. So it made perfect sense for her to continue to eat burgers (albeit veggie ones) or anything else for that matter.

(And I suspect this also highlighted the pretty appalling / unsafe methods that meat is raised also, what with growth hormones, feed made from the same species of animal etc)

And that was before we knew about all the various health implications and raised chances of cancers from eating meat...

    Anyway, back on topic:

Thought you might want to see what we got up to this weekend, we spent it at Centerparcs with the family, then via the Lake District on the way home...

early morning mist in the forest

    colourful puddles

    view across the lake

    the butterfly center

    lake Ulverston

    the Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside

    reflections

Helen took some amazing video footage of Tom falling off a Segway that I can't show you yet because I sent it in to You've Been Framed! Maybe for people who've donated... (haha!)

The truth is there's still a lot of idiotic people out there who look down on veggies / vegans. When I was about 17 I got told I must be stupid ("have a lower intelligence than other people") because I didn't eat meat - why, because I eat a healthier diet and am passionate about how animals are killed / kept?!

Wow, that woman is an idiot...

Like your pics dad! The boat and the puddles one are my faves.

It was my mum and dad's 45th wedding anniversary this weekend, so congratulations to them!

In between taking them out for a meal and visiting them for Sunday lunch, we managed to visit Bingley 5-rise locks which you can walk through as they are currently empty whilst new gates are fitted - something that doesn't happen every day!

    dead in the water...

    the 3-rise locks...

looking down the emnpty 5-rise locks...

the queue to walk through them...

sunny and snowy over Pecket Well...

    Keeper of the hens

    lol @ the cookie monster!

B&W effects are just standard paint shop pro filters.

The easiest way to get the "1 bit of a picture colour and the rest black and white" I find is:

    - get your image, ctrl-a to select All
    - paste as new layer

you now have two layers, each layer contains the same image in colour.

    - select and make the top layer black and white

the image will now appear completely black and white.

    - select your eraser tool.
    - with the top black and white layer still selected, simply erase the bits you wish to be colour.

as you delete the black and white layer, the colour layer underneath will show through. You can zoom in to get it pretty accurate, but as it's the same image, you don't need to be pixel perfect.

    Simples!

Unfortunately it looks stupid in the cellophane wrap so we can't use that anymore. We're going to get some stickers printed that we can just slap onto the sealed bag for easy packaging that still looks good.

Love the snowman!!! We've had similar amounts of snow here too. We all went out in the garden at about half 5ish and did snowballing, etc. Caitlyn was the last to come back in (she made her uncle Mic stay out there with her!) at about 6.15pm. Within an hour you couldn't see that we'd been out there at all. Then I went to the garage to get the stuff out of the tumble dryer, and within another hour my footprints had disappeared again! I think its raining here now so hopefully the roads will be better tomorrow. Your roads are awful Red - the council need to send a snow plough out!

We tried to get Joe out in the snow but he wouldn't the grump! I think he's off sledging today though

We saw so many almost-crashes today...one idiot was trying to drive down this icy, snow covered ungritted road that's the steepest around here...got close to the big drop, realised how much of a bad idea it was, turned around and drove back past us. As he was going back to the less icy road his car was skidding and he was just diagonal on the road...!

There were skid marks further down the village where one car had skidded off the road and gone all the way onto the pavement and back off again!!! People who drive on roads in this condition are daft if they don't absolutely have to...having said that my dad's trying to get to my G'mas today! :001_tongue:

She lives on the other side of Bradford though, so it's all big main roads which should be pretty much clear.

Morning snow pics! The first one is the idiot guy about to turn around in the distance...where the road stops & a very steep descent begins!!

The snow is hanging on, it's still 2 inches thick in some places - not bad to say it only snowed that Saturday  ...some of the other villages are completely snow free! And of course it's not snow anymore, it's just horribly slippy ice all on the pavements!!

We've a friend coming up from Stoke this weekend who didn't have any snow, so he's hoping there's still some (ice!) left!

When me and my cousin Holly were about 4, my Nana would take us to the locks and the guy who worked there pushing them open used to let us help open them. We used to go quite regularly to feed the ducks and watch the boats.

Those holes are scary!!! I can't believe they still haven't sorted them. That floor doesn't look very thick - in your 1st pic it looks like a sheet of cardboard!! The 2nd one looks more like chipboard/fibreboard that has got very wet and therefore come apart. Its a disgrace that your landlord hasn't fixed it yet. Be careful the rats don't disappear inside it!

It looked fantastic Ollie, I wish I'd got one instead of a milkshake!

Kate, yep, it's ridiculous...I've drafted out a letter that we're gonna print and post to next door (landlord's daughter who he told us to go through - unfortunately she's not the nicest person in the world *sigh*) including a photo of the hole. We've also asked if they will pay some rent or for us to stay in a 'holiday' cottage whilst the repairs are done...we've already put our friends out (when the builder couldn't be bothered to show), my parents are allergic to dogs and a hotel wouldn't be best for Kasper what with all the noise.

The floor is plywood. Apparently there was a worm infestation, and prior to us moving in (like a few months before) instead of treating it, the insurance company just put plywood over the rotten wood. But now the plywood's rotting, doh. I don't think the landlord even knew about it as he lives in another country...but yeah, it's pretty scary! I just wish they'd talk to us and sort something!!

We acquired three new members of the family today, and didn't mean to *sigh* :001_rolleyes:

We were planning to get either two shubunkin or three white cloud mountain minnows after Lyle's birthday, as we fancied fish again...but today at the market there were just three tiny minnows left all alone in a massive tank, so we bought a fancy glass bowl for £12.99 (how cheap is that?! And it's nice and wide at the top too so no worries about oxygen) and brought them home with us...

Say hello to Louie, Shock and Baryl! They're tiny tiny, but very pretty.

Haha, they can't do tricks yet CC (well apart from disappearing so we think we've lost one!) but funnily enough I know someone who trained a massive tropical fish to swim to her finger on the other side of the glass and nudge it. When it did it got a reward (fish flakes). It would do it reliably

Well because we planned on getting fish already we chose the names...if we got minnows we were going to call them Lock, Shock and Barrel (from Nightmare Before Christmas movie) but in the end they didn't really suit it, apart from Shock, so we created new ones!

The maximum size for a White Cloud Mountain minnow is 5cm so they will always be pretty tiddly
