Meow Meow is out in the rain tonight - he sprayed up the living room door and then the hall wall which only has one coat of paint over the plaster so will probably stink. I gave him the option of weeing in his litter tray and he refused so out he went. (I will be checking if he wants to come in before i go to bed, I'm a softee after all!) Kitten is out there too. I had the front door open for an hour so that she could sit inside.

The humans in the family are allowed on the furniture if there's space. First come first served after all!!!

I have some condensation-y pics of the frogs, Kero was climbing and got right to the top of his plant so I took some snaps but didn't want to scare him away by taking the lid off! They absolutely adore climbing, whether it be their plant, rocks, bark, anything!

They're really failing at eating...I'm not sure if it's because they're used to living in a tiny but open space, where they can easily see the bugs, so they're not used to hunting for them? Or maybe it's the shock of the move and then another new environment. We've given them some crickets, slugs and earthworms now to try encourage their appetite!

Here is little Zombie who I won at the fair...which I'm pretty sure is illegal

We don't have any fish 'toys' so have had to make do as best we can, and I just hope he is happy in there...we might transfer him to Bog's old tank at the new house but it's packed away here...not sure which is bigger anyway though

He's in the taddies' old home (ie. our old washing up bowl!) as they were released yesterday for the house move...I'll add a couple of snaps of them on their way out but I don't think you can see their little legs which finally grew!!

Looks a little more homely now

He's really shy and tends to hide under the plant pot. I sprinkled him a few flakes because I don't know when he was last fed, and we keep getting excited when we see him out and about haha.

We moved Zombie into the proper fish tank this morning. He really seems to like it and became much more active straight away...I was wrong too, it is a lot bigger than the washing up bowl!!

And, well, Zombie's not on his own anymore...

Walking back from the fair there were 2 people stood halfway back by the farm saying something to everyone who went past, didn't know what. As we approached one said to the other, "Just throw it over a wall!" The other told them to shut up and said to us "Do you want a free fish? We won it at the fair but don't want it"

How could I resist this beauty?!

She's gorgeous, bright orange but all white patterns and white belly. She has half an orange moustache too! And Zombie was on his own anyway, and we'd just moved him into the big fish tank and he looked all lost in there so...say hello to Chloe!

Aww, it's like a romance story! I'm sure I read somewhere that fish don't thrive in things like bowls because it's too claustrophobic as they can't see into the distance. Something like that anyway! I'm glad Zombie and Chloe are happy in their new home. (But like you I thought fish prizes were illegal now?!)

Haha, it really is Kate! Thanks everyone, the fish are both doing very well - very active! - and seem happy and settled. I love watching them, they're so big and bright compared to the minnows!
As for the frogs, well one booger ESCAPED today!!!

Now I had been told they were escape artists, which is why I put the plant low down and opposite sides to some air vents in the tank lid...sat today and Lyle's looking at Kasper sniffing something...all of a sudden Lyle goes, "Froooog!!!"

Thankfully our super awesome dog sniffed at the frog and then came running over to me as I made a squeaking-oh-s**t! noise, bless him, he cares about me so much So Lyle went and scooped the offender up and plopped him back in...we now have cardboard taped over the wholes and will be buying some fine bug-mesh to still allow air flow. No idea where we can get it from but sheesh!

This is the canal we walk past to go in one wood, it's about a 5 minute walk from our house

And the gorgeous goslings!

There were a LOT of bluebells which made for a pretty picture

And this is the second woods, and if you walk for about 40 minutes you can reach Shipley Glen, with the rocks and tramway

We saw a deer within a minute of walking into this forest, it was right in front of us

This is from a few weeks back, when one of the country roads was completely flooded...the field on the left turned into a bog thanks to the constant rain, then ran over the road and flooded the field with sheep in it!!

That's a good idea, I'm sure my mum or friends would have some tights - failing that you can buy them really cheap, a lot cheaper than bug mesh!! Thanks CC

We dug out 10 worms today (they were really hard to find?!) and put them in a dish for the frogs seeing as they're off crickets. One frog ate all the worms and the other got none, so we'll have to collect more and hope the other is in the vicinity this time!

Thank you Kate! The woods are beautiful and a lot bigger than here so we shall enjoy exploring! We saw quite a few other dog walkers out and about so I hope Kasper gets chance to play off-lead with other dogs, as it's rare here.

And...our crickets have bred!!! Awesome surprise, we have little 'wrigglers' and mini-crickets everywhere, which is pretty cool. The adults that are in their now will live out the rest of their lives in there as they're too big to feed to the frogs, so we will wait until the babies are bigger.

And two more big crickets and a tiny 'wriggler' in the top right too

The FBTs don't really seem to like crickets though, much more into worms...

So you're going to have to find something else to eat the crickets!!! I bet the rats would ... only problem being the crickets would escape before they realised it was food!

The chickens would go crazy trying to catch them! Might have to try that actually

We're quite happy having them as extra pets, and will occasionally feed the little ones to the frogs to see if they're interested. Quite cool to have a breeding colony!!

Kero and Slippy socialising

And, we got another new addition to our fish tank yesterday...I know, blame my mum!! He's called Borris

He's a little cleaner plec-type-fish

And I bought some extra decor for the fish tank because I thought it looked a little bare, so we bought a plastic plant and a live plant too...it looks really good in there now!

We went to four different pet shops with my mum, because she wanted to buy two goldfish...and jeez she was SO particular! Eventually at the fourth she saw some she liked, in this tank of about 50+ fish, and we were there for at least 20 minutes...the guy who worked there was getting so annoyed hahaha!

He ended up giving me the net to try catch one, but she liked literally two in the whole tank (which was huge) so they took ages to get...but she has Tommy and Percy now and is smitten :P

Well we have somehow managed to welcome another two pets on-board...I really don't know how this happens! The first was a gorgeous little bunny that we couldn't resist, and we swore we'd get no more pets after that...then we went to our local reptile shop for crickets, and they had some bright green FBT's in...so, say hello to Sprite!

These are in his travel case

He's very brave, he sits out at the front of the glass watching as we come and go all day...we think it's because his tank was at the front of a very busy shop, whereas Slippy & Kero were kept in a small RUB in a stack in a cupboard, and so are used to the dark and being left alone

He's a little thin at the moment but will soon fatten up...he's a keen hunter and happy to eat in front of us

So we now have Slippy, Kero and Sprite!

Sprite is in with the other two...they just blend in a lot more! If you look at the 4th pic down you will see Sprite is actually stood on Kero haha!!

FBTs are very docile and sociable...I think a lot of frogs are, you don't really have to worry about fighting. You have to be careful as they will try eat anything that moves and fits in their mouth...so no babies in adults' tanks!

I've never met a pet where introductions don't have to be carefully handled! Maybe I should get FBTs too!

I thought you'd have to segregate them before introducing them, so they can't catch illnesses from each other...I asked two specialist reptile shops and they both said they'd be fine put immediately together, and obviously fighting wasn't an issue as they're very friendly little guys!

They're low maintenance and very comical to watch...you would have to deal with live food though!

Oh man, I went to a nearby pet shop 3 weeks back to pick up some crickets and a dogs' lead (this was when Kasper's lead randomly snapped one night whilst we were crossing a road!! Thankfully it was about 11pm so the road was dead, and he came back when called, but jeez...) and the pet shop guy was giving me discounts for everything and had crickets that had been in store for a week, so he said I could have them for free...which would have been great if they were the right size!!

I didn't have the heart to turn him down because they'd go straight in the bin, so for a few days we had about 100 huge gross chirping crickets in the house! They were in poor condition and already adults, so most died within a week, but there are about 10 still going

This is a pic from a few days after we got em when most were alive; they were crowding to get to the sun in the tank!!

Would it have been ethically incorrect to have let them go in the wild as a treat for wild life? Or was there a risk of them breeding once free?

I thought that but it's illegal to release non-native species

And they're Black crickets, which chirp and are quite vicious...we get Brown which aren't as bitey and are silent too.

Okay, house pics

Living room bit that goes onto the kitchen, dining area and garden

Lower garden; you can see a little of Lenny's run to the left on the 2nd level, we want to have a vegetable patch and a BBQ/smaller seating area on the sections on the right. You can see Lyle's bird feeder with a simpleton stood next to it too Not sure on the plan for the very bottom...toying with the idea of a pond...or if we stay here for a good few years there's the possibility of chickens, as there's easily enough room for a 10x5 foot run ;)

It was amazingly overgrown but I've cleared the steps, cut a few bushes back, pulled out hundreds of geraniums, cleared all the weeds from the bottom bit, emptied the shed which was FULL of wood and old carpet, most of which has been cleared now...

The poor toad I disturbed twice whilst gardening

That is an ace place you have found Red. The garden is especially nice - shame you had to remove geraniums, I love them but too many can be a problem.

Seeing Kasper in his cage - I didn't know about keeping dogs in crates in the house until my next door said about keeping her two (prize winning) Staffs in them at certain times. They also have two huge kennels outside and get frequent walks over the fields.

I wasn't sure about cages either, Ollie, but lots of people use them and if the dogs are unhappy/insecure, they make a beeline for them.

Well if you check the hencam, you'll see they are alive and well, and with us (Scarlet's parents), where they've always been! When Scarlet 'left the roost' she obviously couldn't take the chickens with her... hence they are here with us.

George, Red lost Millie some time ago but Tilly and Penny are i fine fettle. They live at Hencam HQ, whereas Red, Lyle, Kaspar and the rest live elsewhere. I think that might be what confused you.

Some dog-free photos of the forest today...I really like some of these, the bright green leaves and the light filtering through the trees...they look better full-size but I don't think the forum would be too happy about that

Sorry, I fell in love with all the trees today!

There are some awesome looking trees in the forest, and some beautiful large open spaces...I love it! And there's such a nice peaceful walk along the canal to get there I don't even mind Kasper trying to jump in the water for the ducks!

And of course there are zillions of squirrels :P

I like trees too Red, and the wildlife that lives in and around them (which is why I'm a member of the Woodland Trust). I wish we had a wood near to home as nice as that. Our housing estate was built on the site of a very big wood many years ago, and there are just very small wooded areas dotted around, and they are not cared for or taken care of by the local population. Why bother when you can use it as a rubbish dump?!

Dogs know when they're not wanted and try even harder to get in the way

We're lucky to have two woods near us here, but the one by the canal really is beautiful. It's huge too but we've yet to explore it all; on one side quite far in there's the train tracks so we can't go to the other side with Kasper, or couldn't until we knew it was 100% safe. We stumbled across a lake once too but haven't found that since!!

I cleaned the FBTs tank today and shifted it all around...very pleased to find no crickets in there!! It's funny but since Sprite has joined, Kero and Slippy are much more confident and actively hunting...we got to see all three hunt when I fed them today it was brilliant

Haha! The squirrels are probably way way too tiny to see (they're in the last pic somewhere!!) and the FBT...look between the rocks in front of Sprite! See the red / orange colour? Yep, that would be Slippy's belly!

We had a day out in Skipton with a friend yesterday and stumbled across a museum...it was very fun because it had a dress-up section!!! Lyle got stuck in a laboratory coat too...we thought we were going to rip it getting it off, but luckily the museum staff saw the funny side!

And, this is where Zach loves to sleep...they have a filter in there that makes the water ripple, so I think he's proud of finding somewhere to hide from the constant current

We had a frog hop into an old mop bucket in the garden that was here when we moved in, it fell in during the storm and couldn't get out until we released it

There were 11 words in it that I knew, 5/6 meaningful and 5/6 random, but since then we've found loads more and there are now 20 known words in there

Hahahaha you found loads we hadn't!! It is fun; today on the train to Leeds we were searching for words all the way there.

I'm trying to think of some we found...flop? Oh, chick is on there, to represent all the chucks I've loved over the years. Bean. Kasper at the top backwards. And E Block at the bottom backwards

I can't believe you got them, the letters look tiny on my laptop! We bumped into my nana the other day and I showed her it and she got about five in ten seconds, she was really good at it!!

My dad got James out last night so I made him take some photos to put on the forum. We think James is about 6 foot now!! Lyle's brother came with us to my parents' for tea last night, so I told my dad to feed James two days ago so the mice would be digested and James wouldn't be hungry and hunting!

It worked because James was fine and we had him out whilst his viv was cleaned, yahoo! We've been meaning to do it for ages but the last few times we've tried James was hunting us! Lyle's brother thought James was really cool but was quite scared so watched from the sidelines - I loved it though, I haven't handled him in ages!

In other news Lyle dyed his hair blond, w00t! This was taken just after he'd washed it, so it's a bit more settled now.

And today we went to a really rubbish gala, and look what I won on the tombola!! I love this thing, creepy as it may be

I thought it was a cheap ET toy from many years ago - the sort of thing you'd get off a market-stall. It is very familiar - I wish I could remember where I've seen one before.

Hi guys, sorry ive not been intouch for a while! My hen, Ronnie, isnt looking well atall i wondered what i could do? Symptoms:

1)her comb is over to one side and it is going purple.
2)she was unsteady on her feet this morning and required persuasion to come out of the 'safety' of her ccop.
3)she has lots of poo piled up on her feathers (below her vent). (suggestions of how to clean off).
4) i have made ready break for her a minute ago and she has completely dissed it.
5) shes just not ronnie!

PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEE!

Hey,

Use the things suggested, such as apple cider vinegar, yoghurt etc

2) Hold her in a nice warm (not hot) bath until the hardened poo softens and gently peel away. If it's on her feathers you can snip them away.

3) If you're very worried get her to a chicken vet who can diagnose her much better than an internet forum

i have given her some food and everytime she goes down to peck - not very often - she haves a few pecks and then puts her head back up and it looks like she is drinking but she cant be because i havent given her any liquid??? (i meen she has water of course!)Is this bad??? And i think im just going to see if she gets worse and if she does then i will take her to the vet!

George, chickens are very good at hiding the fact that they are sick, so by the time you notice that something is wrong, most times it's too late. What you describe could be any one of several different diseases with those symptoms. They can pick up diseases from little wild birds, so don't wait too long before you call the Vet.

Hey red i took your advice and massaged her crop and then she put her head forward and threw the whole contents of her crop up! she is now going to be on a diet of plain yoghurt (banana yoghurt(no bits)) for 24 hours!!!

George, whilst there are many chicken-keepers on here who will do everything they can to help - it's often simply impossible to diagnose things over the Internet without seeing the chicken and watching the symptoms and how it behaves, and a veterinary degree helps too. All things your local and helpful vet will possess.

Also, peppering random threads with questions on urgent matters like your hen's health is not the best way to get focussed and timely help - start a new thread in the Animal Welfare or Emergencies forums.

I know you are worried about your pet but you should also understand you have responsibilities and that may stretch to taking your pet to a vet and paying x amount of money to keep that vet healthy, or at least free from pain.

Any further forum peppering of questions in the wrong threads will be deleted, sorry but it just clogs the threads up and you won't get as much response as you would by starting a new thread in the right area.

Update In fact, I've just had to spend 5 minutes going through the other places where you've POSTED EXACTLY THE SAME MESSAGE. This is pretty much the same as what we suffer from spammers so you are receiving the same warning they would: Do this again and you will be permanently banned. Don't piss off the whole forum, myself or Scarlet by cluster-bombing the forum with the same post.

I can understand why you posted it to lots of threads George - most likely figured more chance of it being seen - but the responses end up all over the place so its not much use to you! The threads are marked when there's a new message and most of us read them all so your message will be seen. Neil is right, best way is to start a new thread.

How is your hen feeling? If there's no improvement then you need to get to a vet.

and you all should know i took her to the vet and they said there is a chance of her getting better so just keep doing what you are doing and i have but this morning i have found her in the coop and she had choked on her foodso i have no need to be on this forum for a while - untill i have a few more chickens - (and by the way all of my chickens were ex-bats)speak to you guys later.

Posting in the right place helps you get the help you need as quickly as possible and also makes sure you can see all the replies straight away so it's helping you help yourself. No worries.

Sorry about your hen, although they are tough little critters they also hide any illness or injury to prevent the rest of the flock picking on them so you often don't find there's anything the matter until it's too late, which is why we are so quick to say "vets, now!". People don't realise that leaving it days or even hours can make the difference between recovery and not recovering.
