    Keeper of the hens

And then several days back I used our Plastikote for the first time and coated four various levels, three coats each. Today they were ready to go in the cages - they look SO COOL!

This one is just a cardboard level I made then coated:

     photo plastikote4_zpspajsce22.jpg

Here you can see I've changed the layout again, and there's another extra level which is very thick wood and pretty big. It only cost £7 and stands on four really thick wooden legs...really cool!

     photo plastikote5_zps6plphfbe.jpg

Final layout, the wheel on the top floor only cost £2.60 and is really quiet and the perfect size for mice

     photo plastikote7_zpsgttrt8vm.jpg

I hid kibble around the cage to encourage them to explore, and Thistle could smell it but didn't know where!

     photo plastikote8_zpszizhwk9x.jpg

    "I GOTS IT!"

     photo plastikote9_zps4u6ucgku.jpg

The younger girls really like this toy and I've seen three of them stood on it at once :rolling:

     photo plastikote10_zpszomrjqrf.jpg

I'm finally happy with the mice cages, and tomorrow I'll add the levels to Archie and the degus (I think that's who they're going to!)

    Keeper of the hens

Our friend has been really sweet and helpful whilst things have been a bit difficult here, so we made him a mousie playground as a thankyou!

     photo mouseplay4_zpseogqelis.jpg

It was such a pain to make as the only craft glue we could find (aka rodent friendly glue) was a pritt stick type, and was really weak. After rearranging some things we got it working and it came out okay

The stump with the white lid is filled with balls of tissue, so our friend can hide treats in there and his mice have to empty it out!

     photo mouseplay_zps9abnrys0.jpg

The level's much straighter now, we bent it up to try get the glue to stick better

     photo mouseplay1_zpstmkqivaz.jpg
Now all we need is to give it to our friend :)

    Keeper of the hens

    Thanks Kate :)

Upgraded Prim (Syrian hamster) to a Furet Plus cage tonight. He's used to a Kios so it was a vast improvement haha! Don't have too many spare toys which is annoying as it looks pretty bare...but I think we did an okay job of covering the gaps so the idiot hammy can't plummet from the roof to the ground :rolling:

     photo prim1_zps3p6aljet.jpg

But yeah, I'm in need of more 'things'...will delve into our cardboard recycling tomorrow

     photo prim_zps5m4svj7r.jpg
He should be happy anyway :)

    Keeper of the hens

And the younger mice had a clean out...I had to seriously shuffle the cage about as the previous layout made it virtually impossible to clean...access through the tiny door was terrible but all the different levels made cleaning the base from the roof tricky too!

Halfway through cleaning, Parsley having an explore!

     photo fatties2_zpsx1odnvkr.jpg

Maple was the real troublemaker...climbing on me, on the outside of the cage and leading her sisters to mischief...Maple's awesome ;)

     photo fatties4_zpshoukpyyv.jpg
    Shy girl Acorn :)

     photo fatties6_zpsqedh0uw5.jpg

Maple dug in deep when I piled the bedding into the cage - "Mum, I am NOT coming out!"

     photo fatties7_zpspnnkwhwg.jpg

So now the space under the wooden ramp / blue level is bare, which makes access to the bottom floor much easier!

     photo fatties10_zpshzwho06d.jpg

The pretty girls seemed happy enough with the new design anyway ;)

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks CC! Finally got chance to hand it over to our friend tonight, hope his mice enjoy it :tooth:

warning - lots of boring cage layout photos to follow! ;)

So this was Prim's cage yesterday:

     photo prim_zps5m4svj7r.jpg

    Bit of tweaking today!

     photo furet9_zpsyzbfg6mp.jpg

Now as Prim is a Syrian hamster (and ime nine times out of ten Syrian hamsters are incredibly clumsy and pretty thick - rather than turn and climb back down from somewhere they will just plummet!!) and he's middle aged now, I wanted to really pack the Furet Plus cage out with 'bits', to stop him from falling. Prim spent most his life in the Kios, which is only 30cm tall, so I was assuming he'd be even worse with heights than hamsters usually are...I was right :001_tt2:

     photo furet_zpsfnn2hb5q.jpg

Even when I moved things about it was like Prim was seeking out the gaps he could fall down *sigh*

    "What, me mum?!"

     photo furet1_zps1xgjiluc.jpg

I added plenty of new bits, and tried to cover any space Prim could fall from...ha, good luck there!

     photo furet2_zpsr9oesbjt.jpg

     photo furet3_zpsmcgdtgp1.jpg

Prim wasted no time in exploring and searching for new terrifying drops :rolling:

     photo furet4_zpsiuhs76uv.jpg

I love this photo SO MUCH!

     photo furet6_zpseinp7fd1.jpg

    "Yaaay a dog muffin!"

     photo furet8_zps1uoc30zh.jpg

It's funny after designing so many layouts for mice, where I really don't have to worry about them falling unless the cage is very high / the mice are old...mice are incredible climbers, and it's rare they will let themselves drop from a height, although I have had a few who were fearless...whereas pretty much all the Syrian hamsters I've had let themselves fall, dive off tables etc etc!

    Keeper of the hens

And I moved the older mice from the Perfecto into the Kios, which has more continuous floorspace (80cm instead of 60cm); it's much lower but as mice are so small I was able to add a few extra levels anyway!

     photo kios1_zpsfghqr2to.jpg

The barred sides mean the girls can also finally have a wheel, more things to climb and better ventilation too :)

     photo kios4_zpsyjrbkr5r.jpg

It was a hit with the girls!

     photo kios2_zpsyysnai0f.jpg

     photo kios3_zpsmzjoxnnd.jpg

There's more going on than appears in this photo, it's pretty full with things to do!

     photo kios5_zpstbnnlbmb.jpg

I still think the younger mice win the award for best looking cage though ;)

    Keeper of the hens

Welcomed a little fuzzball home a few days ago, an absolutely beautiful little piggle from a wonderful breeder...he's 11 weeks old and we hope to introduce him to our older rescue piggle. Here he is in his temp cage, he has another hide and hay puzzle feeder up front:

     photo baby2_zpsiqjr6i9g.jpg

He's a Teddy guinea pig, which I've never had before but think they're adorable. Their fur feels so unique! Very thick and fluffy, like lambs' fur. He's a tri colour but very unusual looking (almost looks like a chimera!) - one side of his face is black and ginger, and the other half is mainly white

     photo baby_zps28s3xru1.jpg

He has a perfect split down his face! And on the white side his lower half is solid black, which makes it look like he's wearing trousers :rolling:

     photo baby1_zpsjmvhnsfr.jpg

We have named him Rufio. He's been very quiet and still so far, but he's very young and has never lived alone before. I love him so much, he is some much needed happiness! Cuddle time tonight :heartsabove:

He looks so unusual CC, it's kinda crazy...the line continues down his back, it's like two different guinea pigs got glued together :rolling:

You can see how he looks like he's wearing trousers here too :tooth:

     photo babypig2_zpslq22glva.jpg

This little dude is AMAZING! The entire time I had him on my lap I was grinning like an idiot, he's just so sweet. And his fur feels amazing!

     photo babypig_zpszuifwhrb.jpg

It's rare we've had a piggle that has been comfortable enough to eat on our laps, and usually we've had them several months before we get to that stage. Rufio started chomping his veggies almost immediately, but the sweetest thing was he only ate when I was stroking and fussing him...when I stopped giving him love he would stop eating!

Cuddles with daddy...although daddy looks a bit murderous here :rolling:

Lynn he's amazing! You've had lots of piggles, haven't you? Have you had a Teddy before? I couldn't believe how different his fur felt!

Most times when he comes out he likes to snuggle under my chin. He'll just sit with me, and he's happy to be fed and will munch away on all sorts. Sometimes he has an explore but mostly he cuddles. We had started the beginnings of clicker training but it all went out the window with no power!

This is the most exposed part of our walks...no matter the weather it's always windy here. The farm where part of the wall was blown down is close to here and the 'end of the world' walk is slightly further than you can see...this is where we were trapped in torrential rain and a hailstorm last week, absolutely no shelter :tooth:

We got some coconut in to give to our dogs. Kasper really liked it whereas Zoey snubbed it (this was before Raiden), yet she loved coconut oil...Kasper and Raiden get coconut oil on their food every day, and I've also read you can give it to them frozen so I need to try that too!

Prim hasn't made much damage to his house yet (not that he's used it as a house either, he's tipped it over and stands on the wall to gnaw it :rolling: ) so I think it should last a while. I think Prim is one of the cutest Syrians we've ever had, I love lemon Syrians and he's such a sweetie too

Zoey was named after a game character (feisty, loyal and a total tomboy) and Rey was named after a wrestler (small and a very impressive high flyer). Omb can you imagine how happy I'd have been to find out I was named after a hamster hahaha! :rolling:

I love the pale lemon Syrians Lynn. I've not seen many of them here (a lot of the traditional golden and white ones, and more bright gingery orange ones, but the pale hammies are rarer), I'd definitely have another. I'd also love a solid chocolate / black Syrian too.

Bet you wish you hadnt told me how to do screen savers all those years ago see I do remember some things although I would have popped in before Christmas but couldnt remember my password. Senior moments aplenty nowadays but hey ho all part of the big adventure. I see that the patterns are famous in fact a picture of some I made popped up randomly on my face book page last week much to my surprise. It was pictures snagged from here the ones with my little brown hen with Silvie cat in the background Shame so many are making money from them and you are not getting anything back to help hencam. I must admit I do dislike people using the jumpers just for the fun of dressing up their hens. Back home for me tomorrow I will try and pop in again real soon xxxxx Love to you all xx

Well, what fun reading the last couple of days on this thread!
    Cheared me up no end.
Thread takes ages to download due to large number of pics, so I don't see it every day.
However postman just delivered letter with results from my blood test yesterday, which was very satisfactory.
And thread had loaded by the time I'd stopped whoop whooping.
(Got very scary blood just now)

Fantastic to have NN back with us. A lot has happened since you were last here. You must have thought you were on the wrong site!

You miss one day on here and it all goes on! Sorry I missed you NN, hope you're back here soon. Were your ears burning this week? Hubby wants to buy a new camera so that he gets "better photos" and I pointed out how great your pictures were with your hubby's old camera - it's the eye not the hardware!!
Neil - maybe a belt on the wish list for your birthday!
Glad your bloods were good Ollie - hope you're feeling OK. xx

So Happy to hear about your Bloods Ollie such good news to start the new year on. I love the new hens and their smart beautiful new house. You sure choose a lovely selection of hens. Red you must have more animals than any pet shop, they certainly have a wonderful and loving life with you and Lyle also I have really enjoyed looking at all your lovely pictures. I had a couple of years photos lost end of last year as my computer went ballistic and while it was being sorted the whole lot were wiped away I was so sad I can tell you. Good job I had posted some to face book but they were not the best of them.
Kate... my ears are always burning ha ha I have gotten used to it now!! I must admit I do have a new posh camera with a selection of lenses. We tend to travel about a fair bit and both love having photography as a hobby. I was so excited last year as we went to see Puffins. I must admit I cried when I saw the very first one as I felt so emotional I had wanted to see then for myself since I was a child. I am a silly old think like that Ha ha
CC I am ok thanks and I so hope you are as well I have missed your ready wit and fun I hope you and Eric are doing just Dandy also.
Lynn It is so nice to be back I know we keep in touch through face book and it is so good to know you are here also.
Neil dont worry about the moon it made me determined to sort out the password and get back on here so it was meant to be. I am just wondering if you should start drinking builders tea now ! All for now as we are off to watch the red arrows practice this afternoon. Chat agin real soon I Love you all xxxxxxx

Hope you're going to get some good photos of the Red Arrows NN. I bought hubby a couple of photos for Christmas from a professional - one of a Vulcan and one of a formation of vulcan, hurricanes and spitfires. He'd asked for the formation one,but I thought the Vulcan would make them a nice pair. Only problem is hubby misread the sizes and they don't fit in any standard size frames so I might have to get them professionally framed which will cost a fair bit, but sometimes you just have to don't you!

The pictures sound lovely Kate and well worth having professionally framed. I didnt take any pictures yesterday as it was quite misty and overcast. Plus I felt frozen all day just couldnt seem to be able to get warm so stayed in Phoebe tucked up under a warm blanket and watched from a good vantage point. I am fine today I think I was just worn out after two weeks away. Had a lovely time though so can not complain xxx

Have you looked on Deramores Kate they have a beautiful selection of yarns. Easy to use siteand they are real quick delivery also. I dont get all my yarn from them as I do tend to shop around looking for bargains. If I see a good deal I will get the yarn and add it to the stash for future projects. I know this might sound really funny but for stuffing I buy a polyester pillow and open it up and use that for stuffing. It fluffs up nicely and makes a firmer filling and sure does go a long way. What do you use Kate ?

    Keeper of the hens

Cleaned out the piggle boy tonight, which he wasn't happy about. I've swapped him from wood shavings to, um, forgot what it's called...the little strips of cardboard. We kept our rats on something similar, but the current stuff seems better. It's softer and thinner.

     photo piggyclean1_zpsg6lhsvhw.jpg

We shuffled the table and crate, so the crate is easier for whichever pup is out to get into...it's just so good when we're doing something finnicky & the dog offers to just sit in the crate :tooth:

I've used Deramores and Wool Warehouse NN, they are both good but neither has exactly what I need. I've never made a 'toy' or anything that needs stuffing which is why I was curious as to what was a good filling. I suspect a pillow is cheaper than buying just the stuffing!

If I am making just one toy I buy a bag of stuffing but as I make a fair few lavender bags and such I get through a fair amount. I made six knitted dollies this year as well as loads of other stuff. Mallory Loved the first doll I made so much I had to make her three more she informed me. I made them of course she is such a sweet heart. Then I made two more to go to Norway as gifts. Have a go at making a toy I am sure you will find it rewarding. But beware every one will want one Ha ha, I made Mallory two little mice.I ended up making 26 in the end not for Mallory by the way !!!! fiddly little blighters to make as well.

Thanks for the advice NN, someone makes knitted mice for them to sell at rehoming, but if I made any I'd be giving them straight to the cats! I will try a toy or two when I can find the right wool. I saw a pattern to make owls out of the wool you used for the hedgehog, but I was in the middle of making some gloves at the time and wasn't sure who to make one for! The teddy would be for me if I made one!

Do you know Ive never made socks or gloves Kate My Mum used to make loads and so quickly they were so warm and toasty and such a welcome gift. I just finished an owl and at the moment am trying to finish a father Christmas that someone gave me for Christmas. Its slow going for some reason or other so I decided not to put it on the back burner any more and get on with it. That tinsel yarn feels like knitting up a pan scourer and makes my hands sore but once done it is so soft here is the owl he is off to Norway very soon just got to make a baby one to go with it xx

Ohh they are really lovely Kate and such a wonderful gift You are like me can not bear a mistake I have undone stuff so many times but the end product just has to be right. I have a neighbour who makes things and brings them to show me but there is always so many mistakes or it is cobbled together badly. I did mention a mistake one time but she just brushed it off with well she wont be able to do any better so whats it matter. Seems such a shame to do all that work and its not perfect and not my way. Hi Ollie how are you doing ? I dont blame you for keeping them to yourself. People do seem to think you can just make something and dont think about the time and cost involved but can not be bothered to learn for themselves. If I get oh you can make me one I say OK that will be so much and I need money upfront to buy the wool. Whoops different matter then ha ha. I do make things for friends and family but as gifts of my own choosing

I like making things for friends, but only those I know will appreciate the effort and hopefully like what I make. I find it hard to make more than one of anything - low boredom threshold! I take too long to make things - I'm like you NN and they have to be perfect so take a while to finish. Would cost a fortune for me to sell if I wanted to make a profit!!

I think it is a real compliment when people say they are like shop-bought. It seems they think because they're home made they'll be rubbish (like your neighbour NN!)

Caitlyn and Shaun still use their blankets, and they tell me they're still like new. I saw a shop-bought blanket a few weeks ago that was about 6 months old and had bobbled and didn't look as nice as it had new. (I'd copied the look of it for Caitlyn's). They use cheap wool, machines, and charge extortionate prices!

Fantastic photos Red so glad you had a good time out and about. I love snow drops also they are one of my favourite flowers hasnt there been a lot this year. We were passing some woods a few days back and they were full of them so beautiful but it was a fast road and no where to park so didnt manage to get pictures.
