I immediately thought of yellow crocus = saffron. Chewbacca has elegant tastes.
But Google tells me that saffron crocus is blue and a special plant. Seems it's easy to grow too.

They only use the stamens, Ollie hence the cost of it. I used to live near Saffron Walden which was famous for them. My brother and I would often ride our bikes there. Well thats to say he had a bike with a razor blade type of seat and I had to use Mums old sit up and beg bike. I dint have a bile of my own until I was in my forties !!! We used to bike all over back in the day. When we went back that way a few years ago I was amazed to see just how far we really did cycle and couldnt believe we went so far.

    Keeper of the hens

Correct me if I'm wrong anybody as I haven't had much experience with scotch eggs, but it's a hard boiled egg wrapped in meat (no idea what meat) and usually with bread crumbs on the outside, then cooked, often fried. When you cut them in half you see the egg nestled amongst the meat :tooth:

They vary in size from fairly small to gigantic!

Lovely pictures and I sure didnt know they loved a dust bath. I just assumed they would lick themselves like a lot of furry animals. Poor little Quail scaring the day lights out of them with a strange shrew. I remember once Daisy cat caught a mouse and Auntie Beak my chief hen stole it from her and ate it. Ugh I was nearly sick xx

No chins as yet CC well that except for double chins !!! I think Sootz would forever be troubling them if we had any. I caught my hens tormenting a frog once luckily it managed to hop in the pond before they had killed it. When I was doing the veg garden last year I found four in total and had to rush them to the pond for safety as Chewbacca was helping me.

Took my camera on Kasper's walk yesterday in an attempt to enjoy it...meant I got a lot of weird photos as I was just messing about with it. Thank you Kate, and the b&w photo of the brick wall is my favourite too - the bricks really pop and I like that there's a little bit of colour in the sky too!

Thanks NN. I always used to see things I wanted to get a photo of but the pics would never come out right...seem to have finally gotten better at capturing what I want

Since I've been low I haven't spent much time with the quail at all...they've been looked after by Lyle obviously, but they were calling and calling - turns out they were calling for me!! We brought them upstairs a few days ago and they haven't called once; they sit close to us and watch us and they're just so happy

I love having them in the room again - we wanted to bring them up sooner but I didn't have the energy to hoik the crate up the stairs!! - and as I noticed they were consistently laying eggs in the dust bath I gave them some hay for a nest.

Everywhere I've read says that quail drop their eggs wherever they are, and they won't nest...yet look what the girls did!

    Keeper of the hens

Welcomed home Seth the Crested Gecko today :)

     photo crestedgecko2_zps8nkoa02s.jpg

His house cost £30 total - the RUB was £9 and the large plant was £10 from a pet shop, everything else was far cheaper. We have another large plant on the way, £5 online. Most terrariums Cresties are kept in (which are much smaller) cost £50 - £90 for just a glass tank, so we didn't do bad :D

     photo budget1_zpszkfdzzym.jpg

The white plastic spoons were from the beer making section of Wilkos and cost £1; I thought they'd be perfect for climbing!

Cresties enjoy climbing and once they're used to handling they're fantastic - they also rarely bite. They grow to about 8 inches long (Seth is less than 4 currently!) and are one of the easiest reptiles to care for. Currently he's on paper towels as substrate because with loose bedding there's a slight chance he could accidentally swallow it and get impacted.

     photo budget4_zpsxgui9waq.jpg

He's a very pretty looking Crestie, but I'm not sure what morph he is...I think a flame?

     photo crestedgecko1_zpsi5uzyyt2.jpg

We can begin handling him in a few weeks (reptiles take a long time to settle in so it's best to give them a while) which will be exciting - baby Cresties can be jumpers! We've wanted a Crestie since before Kasper, so it's cool to finally have one :tooth:

Secondly we collected some branches for the quail girls today...omb they were terrified when I was adding them to the cage (they'd never seen branches before) and both of them flew out haha. I slotted the branches in, then scooped the girls up and plopped them home...they got used to them pretty quickly.

I haven't seen them stand on them yet, and quails aren't known for perching, but they might enjoy them...there's three long ones and a shorter one too.

     photo branches2_zpsxfuvwfsc.jpg
And this is how the girls normally greet me, when I don't have scary branches :)

That's cool Lynn!! He's a real little cutie, I can't wait to start handling him, although I have no idea how to get him out if he's all curled up in his plants like he loves doing!

    Thanks NN

Close-up pic of the little guy...he ate his first meal but hasn't eaten since, little git. We'll be buying some honey in to see if we can tempt him!

He gets fed every few days, and he gets live insects twice a week. Technically he doesn't need the live food at all, but I think he's used to being fed insects and I'm sure he'll enjoy hunting them :)

NN I haven't seen him move that much, but he seems to be quite slow. He's got his favourite places to sleep and sit now, he loves waking up & sitting on the wooden ladder

He's eating well now so we'll be having the first handling session soon. Young Cresties are well known for being very jumpy, in that they will literally just jump and leap when they're handled!!! They usually settle as they get older, but it makes for some fun handling!

    Keeper of the hens

Some pics from walks these past few days...real glad I dislocated my knee last week and not this, the bright sun makes for some awesome photography!

     photo 10mnth6_zps38wrudhv.jpg

    Everywhere's really greening up now!

     photo 10mnth5_zpsvgqh57we.jpg

My parents said it hasn't been so warm in Yorkshire but we've all been melting here.

     photo 10mnth3_zpsjdmxpo5v.jpg

     photo summershere6_zpshs6hykls.jpg

     photo rescue5_zpstp0elryf.jpg

Also we were able to go volunteer for the first time in a year a few days ago, we only took out one dog and had to match it carefully because of my knee, but we had a great time.

Marley was an 18 month old Patterdale Terrier who, to say he was in rescue, was incredible. He reminded us both a lot of Raiden in virtually every way, but he was missing a few things due to lack of training...we had him in the paddock for 20 minutes playing and working on training, but then another volunteer was being an arse and breaking the rules, so we clipped Marley up and had some lead walking time too. Lovely boy, don't think he'll be there for long!

We also met a beautiful rooster boy in the wildlife area; he came sprinting over for some fuss, and wasn't happy when I couldn't love on him because of the fencing - he even brought his girls with him!!

     photo rescue_zpskhehoteq.jpg

     photo rescue2_zpsci6bpe3y.jpg

And there were some gorgeous chicks in a small run too, there was a Light Sussex-y one that didn't have remind me of baby Milly!

     photo rescue4_zpsyevar7ei.jpg

And here's a video of Marley having fun; if you watch the first time I ask him to sit you will see calming signals, whereas the second time (after 20 mins training) he was much happier and totally comfortable

Looks like you had a good day! My friend has just adopted a dog from a local sanctuary. She's lovely but is apparently dog aggressive. I suggested getting some one-on-one training (surely a group session would be no good for a dog-aggressive dog!) but it's expensive (between £30 and £50 an hour).

    Keeper of the hens

The horrible thing is Lynn you get a lot of young adolescent dogs in (whose only issues are excitement and lack of training) and rescue completely changes them...it can take months to get their true personality back once adopted, for some they stay changed for life. I'm hoping Marley is adopted asap :(

Kate some places do reactive dog classes where each dog has an individual area with barriers, but depending on how aggressive the dog is it might not work. Tell your friend to have a look at the Look At That and engage-disengage game...I'll try find a few links. Basically pairing up seeing other dogs with tasty treats, and teaching the dog to come away from watching other dogs before they get too over-stimulated.

Thanks NN, it was great to go! It was fun watching Marley become more responsive the longer we spent with him and more training we did

Thanks NN!! I put a lot of effort into his habitat because they do like to climb and hide, and I think I've covered both bases well :tooth: I wish you could tell how big it was though; that rock hide on the ground can fit a 3ft corn snake in it!!

Huge shuffle of the quail cage today!

     photo buffet5_zpsmvcnafim.jpg

The layout has still changed a little, even though I only took this today haha. The green igloo is now at the back and the pink Ovo is at the front. The idea is at night we can use the wooden bridge to barricade them at the rear, under the black matting...if we leave them out they panic when the sun comes up but it's still dark to see each other, one begins to call and the other ignores them so they call indefinitely :rolling:
