Do you know if roosters' spurs ought to be clipped or looked at or anything? I was thinking about cats' dew claws and wondered whether cockerels ought to be done too...

    Keeper of the hens

I asked the Ostrich farm about this (can't remember why, think i was just curious :D ) and unless the spurs are long and causing the roo difficulty walking, or he is hurting the female when they mate, or they have curled round and are hurting him, they don't need to be trimmed.

If the boy is attacking with the spurs you can get them removed, but this is painful and traumatic for the roo.

They look very curved/curly (must be my influence...:rasta: ) but he certainly has no problems walking so...I think I'll leave it! (sounds of people making clucking noises and shouting 'CHICKEN!!!' assault my earoles...)

    Keeper of the hens

CC, what is a dew claw?? :P

A spur is big spike above the rooster's back toe (on the back of their legs), they can use it to protect their flock, fight with other roosters, and grab onto the female during mating.

A dew claw is the claw dogs use in the way we would use a thumb, only it's not opposable. I don't think cats use theirs in the same way.
The day cats get opposable thumbs and thus manage a tin opener is the day we get thrown out of the house by the cats, as that's all we're useful for...

I think if animals had opposable thumbs and could pronounce consonants - our collective gooses would be cooked.
