phpbb is a popular forum, but as it's popular, it's also targeted by script-kiddies looking for ways to get into the server and hack it, which is why you then constantly have to keep it up to date - as they discover vulnerabilities in the software it's patched and you need to update.

I use vanilla forum as it's more aimed at actual conversations (no stupid extra fluff like private messages, smilies (oops!) etc)

Is it true that it only snows when it is above 0*c, and when it is below zero it hails?

That's what someone told me, but i don't believe them

Its snows when the snow made in the sky manages to reach the ground still frozen..so if its below 0 then it will surely snow, but it can snow when its above zero on the ground too.

Hail form in cumulonimbus (thunder) clouds, so its happens when its thunderstorm season (usually). There aren't too many thunderstorms in winter (at least where I live) but we do get them occasionally.

We also get Ice Storms. That is when the precip falls as water but freezes on everything that it touches and builds up.

So, ha, he was wrong! Snow and hail can happen at various, and even the same, temperatures as each other then? It's the clouds that are different?

    Thank you Jonny :)

Well hail IS unlikely below zero, but it COULD snow at anytime..as long as it survived to hit the ground.
It snowed in summer here once (of course it melted as soon as it hit the ground but..).

I take it it doesn't get all that cold up your way, hence the confusion??

I'd say it gets cold, yes, but compared to other parts of the world i guess not... :P

It started because we went outside when it was hailing, and i said i wished it were snowing. Then the guy goes "Oh, it only snows above zero...if it's below zero you only get hail," which i thought was highly doubtful...

Does anyone know what I can do with about 182 cocktail sticks? I needed 18 but the shop only sold packs of 200.

182 people? I think after about 10 pokes they'd start expecting it.

You could build something out of them, like people who build castles etc out of matchsticks...although i guess lollipop sticks would be easier for that

... or put them in the back of the cupboard til you need another 18.

(In reality, this means put them in the back of the cupboard til you need them, then when that moment arrives, search everywhere, give up, and go the shop and buy another 200. Then, put THOSE 182 away and find ... yes, the first lot!)

Anyone know how to deal with a leak in the double glazing where the extractor fan fits please?
I need to put in a new fan anyway.
I once read that it doesn't matter too much about the vacuum in there but it does need resealing on a hot day when the condensation has dried out.

I'd use some mastic sealant on it, Ollie. You'll have to wait till we get some hot weather...

Take your favourite pet (if you have one)

If it was put into a room with 30 other pets as close to identical as can be, and (if it's an animal that will respond to his/her name) you weren't allowed to call for it, would you be able to tell it which was your pet?

All the identical pets are as tame/untame as yours, you have to choose from mannerisms alone.

    What do you think?

I believe every animal is an individual, formed through life experience, parental guidance, and instinct. Just like us !
So if you were to spend an amount of time with an animal, you would learn the mannerisms it displays during certain circumstances. I believe recognition of said pet, during said experiment, is very likely.

Oh, I am using the term "every animal" loosely. I am sure if your favorite pet happened to be a house ant.... you would soon lose your favorite pet in the experiment !

If Tuppence was put in a room with 30 other Tuppences, she'd be the one who came when I whistled. Or I'd wait and see who started the fight; that'd be Tuppence.

    The cats, yes.

The rats - hmm. It'd be hard to get 30 rats exactly like Patrick or Molly, but if you could then no. Unless they were all normal and friendly coz my 2 aren't! I have trouble telling angel and saffy apart from each other, so with a load more of them I wouldn't stand a chance!
