    Hello Runny Poo Bird Here!

I was wondering if you could help me please.

I have 2 hens, goldie and specks, specks is the quieter out of the 2 but goldie dosent half like to be heard, she lays an egg and makes a terrible noise that seems to last for ages, specks goes to lay an egg and goldie starts again, the neigbour makes a noise and goldie starts again, im am dreading letting them out in the morning, im worried that i might get a complaint from the council as we have neigbours all around us. Its not a cluck or a glaubel its a cluck cluck cluck cllluuuccckkkluuuck over and over again, its the reason we didnt get a bloomin cockrel becuase of the noise, they are very spoilt and have the whole garden to roam in, we are going to build an enclosure to keep them in and hopefully that will shut her up, any ideas????????? also goldie likes to hop into the rabbit hutch and go in the bedroom compartment to try and lay an egg, obviously when the rabbit is not there. Please help, should i tie her beak up???? (only jokin)

    Keeper of the hens

Hens aren't as noisy as roosters, but they aren't silent... When they lay an egg, they like to tell everyone about it, and I guess some hens are noisier about it than others!

It's the "big egg" song ("big big big EEEEEGGGGGGG! big big big EEEEGGGGGG!!!") and should only go on for a few minutes (though it feels like hours when you are hoping the neighbours don't hear it at 5am!)

Maybe you could take your neighbours some nice eggs round and say something like "sorry if the hens sometimes make a bit of noise but they are just proud of these, hope you enjoy them"... a little bit of bribery goes a long way!

I don't think been in an enclosure will have any effect.

    Keeper of the hens

Is Goldie the big boss? Chickens at the top of the pecking order are usually much more vocal than other chickens because they have the responsibility of looking after the rest of the flock. The egg call simply translates into, "Everyone, i have found a safe nest place for you all to lay eggs." Goldie yells about it so much because she is trying to keep her other girls safe.

It is doubtful that keeping them in an enclosure will make any difference. Goldie is just being a good chicken, taking care of her friends and letting them know that everything is safe. Tilly will also join in any Egg Calls that are taking place, and has even been known to go and sit in the nest box with Penny even if she doesn't want to lay :-\

Penny is the loudest chicken in our flock, and after laying an egg she will happily yell about it for half an hour. I've found that going down and chatting with her, or giving them treats, will shut her up - but sometimes she starts again anyway after a few minutes, so it's best to just wait it out!

I personally like the sound of chicken clucks (apart from Midget's crowing!) and as long as it's not too early in the morning i can't imagine anyone would complain. Like my dad suggested, take your neighbours a few egg round - if they have kids ask if they want to come round and see the chickens, a free trip to a petting farm and free eggs should win them over

I hate to break this to you but I'm not sure that your mother would want your first successful recipe to include an act of cannibalism...

Thanks for your comments, goldie is the Top bird so to speak she is the one that pecks my bum first when im bending down : (
I dont have enough eggs to share them with my neigbours there mine all mine no i have given them some before honestly (not many though), its not that good that i cant shut her up but it only is when she or her sister specks are laying eggs, oh and the day i had an injured pigeon land in the garden they went absolutely mental, caught the pigeon put it in a box and called the rspca so they soon got over that. Thanks for your help, i will just have to get used to it and hope the neigbours dont complain.

Don't be silly, Nancy; whyever would we stay on topic???:wink:
Have there been any grumblings yet, Joanne? You might be lucky; chickens are trendy at the moment so the neighbours might be a little more understanding than they would be otherwise. Three cheers for Jamie Oliver and Hugh Frightfully-Longname!
