Does Gravy the roosterette go to Jo, who will keep him in an Ark with two HUUUUUUGE RIRs called Satan and Beelzebub, or does he go to Wendy's uncle who will let him roam free with other chickens but not lock them up tightly at night so foxes are a possibility?

Keep him! He's so cute! But I guess the safest and more comfortable option for Gravy is Wendy's uncle

How big is the Ark at Jo's?? Do her chicken ever get to leave the Ark for exercise? I'd go with the safest place to keep him at night. Free range is great during the day, but at night when most of the losses happen, or at least they do around here, that's what would sway my decision. :001_rolleyes:

Been to Jo's tonight, and they're only in the Ark overnight. She'll get him 2 bantam girlfriends, and they'll have a big run to themselves. So I think it'll be Jo who has Gravy!

Jo's sounds like a brilliant place to be - he gets let out in a secure run throughout the day with his banty girls, and then at night he's locked up safe from foxes. Top notch! :001_smile:

    Keeper of the hens

Hens make brilliant mothers until the chicks are old enough to look after themselves. From four weeks old the chick/s can look after themselves.

Depending on how 'motherly' the hen is feeling, she might keep them under her wing for a while longer...silkies especially are prone to babying their chicks until they are almost fully grown!

Milly kept her chicks with her until they were about ten weeks old (she was still trying to get them to sleep under her wings :-\ ) and then one day she just turned on them, and every time they went near her she would peck at them or chase them away. You gotta be cruel to be kind, I guess, but it must be confusing for the chicks!

Did I ever tell you that when Danny was little I told him I was the drummer in Josie and the pussycats - which was a cartoon programme from yesteryears. He believed me for AGES!!! He only twigged because he said if it was me we'd be rich and living in a big house!!! Sucker! (I do love him really!)
