For anyone who has not heard, read or seen this....a man walked into the office of the Arkansas State Democratic Chairman, Bill Gwatney and shot him for reasons unknown. Rest in Peace , Mr Gwatney.

Very sad. I saw the headline on MSN yesterday but didn't get around to reading the article.

I remember sometime last year an MP was doing an open surgery in his constituency and was attacked with a samurai sword. His assistant was killed. The man had mental health issues - not sure what his punishment was.

The world is more dangerous I know. Recently, will somewhat recently, someone stabbed a person to death randomly in a greyhound in Canada! It frightened me so much; now I am terrified of public transportation.

Don't let it. These episodes are, as you say, random. What if someone gets stabbed walkking along the road - are you going to stop walking? Don't let these people affect your way of life, Nancy. Most of them are ill, only a small proportion are bad.

First I thought it was a greyhound that got done in, then I thought it must be in a greyhound stadium. Got there eventually though...:dupe:

Lol! Would you know what we meant if we said we were getting the double-decker? Or the tube?

Just wondering if it translates the other way too!

Yes, most folks know what those are - even though we don't have 'em here. (Although Nancy might have some double-decker buses in Canada.) I think its because they are sort of British icons. We see them on the news all the time. That and the changing of the guard at the palace. And the royal family standing around in big hats, knee socks & plaid.

Its SO funny to read this sentence as someone who doesn't know that Greyhound is the name of a bus company. OMG!! :D :D

I'm glad an actual greyhound wasn't involved...

Have you ever heard the name of "the tube" in San Fransisco? BART.

The Dublin one is called the DART I think. Has one merkin city got one called the El? Something like that. I know I was reading a book and it said 'she caught the El', and I was thinking she'd contracted some disease...this caused confusion for several chapters. :\

:D Ah. Well, she went home from work because she was feeling unwell, then it said she caught the L. Which I assumed meant Lurgy or something. Which is why I try not to read merkin books because I often end up confused; although now I've got you lot to put me straight!

CC: Your only the second person who I've heard use the term Lurgy.

My mom used to say we'd catch the "dreaded Lurgy" if we didn't wash up or something like that...actually she still says it.. not the washing up bit - i figured that one out.

Is she English? Or maybe she listened to the Goon Show - they had something about lurgies/the lurgy on there. We talked about lurgies ages ago and no-one Over There knew what we were on about! Diane's being taught English, very slowly and painstakingly, but she doesn't seem to have got that Dick Van Dyke knack at all. Still, we live in hope...! :D

Yes she is English. Born in London, lived in Chelmsford (she was around for the bombings/ration books, etc when she was 5 or so).

I also have an Aunt/Uncle and cousins over there as well.

My dad was American. And I'm a first-gen "Canuck".

As we're in the Midlands it'd be more "ow bin ya?" or "yow awlryte?" or "om tekkin me babb-ee on the buzz". He'll need his own translator - perhaps I could go to!
