Now and then it'd be nice to emphasise a word without making someone feel that I'M SHOUTING AT THEM. So...any chance of italics? Or bold without having to do all that </> <^> <?> business?

So how do you do italics? On the piano forum, you press a little square and it goes italic, then you press it again anbd it stops. I don't know how difficult that'd be to pull off.

As someone who uses computers all day and helps everyone else out in the office with theirs - I'm with Ollie and CC. A button to click would be so much easier. I can't be bothered typing all those extra bits. Its alright for you young 'uns - you've got time to spare. Us oldies have to make the most of every second and I ain't wasting them typing arrows and slashes and whatevers!!! No button - no formatting for me!

    That confuses me even more.
    What is 'hypertext'
'Markup' sounds like something to do with an exam paper.
'Language' I can cope with - I suppose it means 'computer speak'

But put them all together and it is complete - ?!?!?!?!

Yep you are right. There SHOULD be a button for BOLD, italic, quote etc.

Even I, Mr. Boffinator would rather just TYPE in hencam instead of copy/pasting bits of HTML code.

I actually even find the Vanillacons a bit distracting to do, but at least those you can just type in the shortcut..if you can remember it.

Don't expect italics or bold buttons anytime soon, there's no point me spending time adding them as half the time I have to disable stuff because of 'abuse' (remember the rainbow text fiasco?!)

If you need to use italics or bold enough then you'll use the html for it, otherwise KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is the way to go! ;)

There wouldn't have been vanillacons if half the people hadn't moaned for them, so don't start complaining about them either :confused1:

This should go in the rants section!

Ollie - html is the name of the code that the computer reads in order to make things (like text) appear on the screen. It is actually lying underneath the forum itself. We've been using it to add 'extras' like italics in.

If you highlight this text I've written, and then right mouse click on it, you can then click on 'View Selection Source.' That will show you the code that actually lays under what comes up as just text here.

I'll add a vanillacon in so you can see that too.

The heart will have a lot of code around it...

Neil, I am always amazed at what a great job you do, negotiating the tricky road between all our wants, demands, and peculiar behaviors. You have managed to keep this site a lovely community for years now and I find that a really unique thing in the wilds of the internet.

Somehow, you seem to have a great instinct about when to step in and provide a boundary and when to sit back and watch us just scamper around being the singular individuals that we are.

It must be hard for you sometimes. I hope you know how loved and appreciated you are.

Gosh Kate - if you eat any less you are going to join the ranks of the zipper people. Speaking of that, where IS Lynn, anyway??

Ace, I have a hunch about some of the people who sign up and then disappear (because I've wondered about it over the years.)

I think Hencam attracts a lot of people who are not very computer savvy. On the up side it keeps a lot of the usually *ugh* behavior out and makes us the charming site that we are, but it also means that people can get lost in the forum, get frustrated and not come back. I'm guessing-partly from comments I've read from some of them. I also think this because a lot of new people start out talking by creating a thread. If they were used to forums they probably wouldn't start that way, yes? They'd post in the threads that we have up for new folks... So I think its a sign that Hencam attracts people who aren't used to forums. Maybe.

Do you agree? If so, any ideas how to help new people keep from getting lost here?

I think its an easy forum too. What I think puts people off is that we are all so friendly and chatty towards each other that they might think we all know each other previously. A bit like when you go somewhere and there are a group of people hanging out, laughing and joking. If you know one of them you can go join in, but if you don't you are reluctant to - even though they would probably welcome you and be happy to meet you.

It was me that suggested it to CC! I'm not going to get addicted to it again!

I think I need therapy. I keep saying "yes, yes" instead of just "yes". How can I stop myself! Don't even know when I started it, but noticed at the weekend that I do it.

Rubber band on your wrist and snap it every time you say it!

Isn't there some movie character who does that? *I like tomAHtos. Yes, yes.* Sounds familiar.

I don't know, but I seem to do it most when I'm with Rachael.

I'll do it once, it'll hurt, so I won't do it again. Perhaps I should put the rubber band on then get Rach to snap it when I say it!

Me neither...I thought it was something people with addiction problems did as a matter of course. Or any behaviour that they want to modify.
