...with no eggs under her. I've put three eggs we already had underneath. Have I done the right thing?

    Keeper of the hens

    Yes indeedy.

If she wants to hatch chicks, and you don't mind, then giving her the eggs to hatch is the kindest thing you can do. Otherwise she would have sat on that nest for weeks, maybe even months, trying to hatch thin air until she eventually gave up.

Whereas this way she has a chance of getting more chicks, which is what she obviously wants!

Thankyouthankyouthankyou! I was sooooo worried when I realised there was nowt underneath, and I could only think of our old Border Collie and how miserable she was with her phantom pregnancy. So...watch this space.
    Eric can't wait; he's soooo excited...

Friend of ours, who lived in France, had a goose that sat on eggs for weeks and weeks. Obviously not fertile but she wouldn't let anyone near to help. Some of them were so old that they were transparent!

    Keeper of the hens

Tilly has sat on eggs, empty nests, stones etc before.

Wouldn't come off the nest for months a couple of years ago, then we got Eva and she became Tilly's 'chick.' It was beautiful to watch them together, and must have been a lovely feeling for Eva

I was being ironic, Kate. What he actually said was 'Not more bloody chickens...'

Aw. I thought he really was excited :(

Red, I didn't (well still don't) remember that Tilly did that with Eva. That's so sweet.

    Keeper of the hens

Yep, Tilly was the only one who didn't peck Eva, and would call her over for food etc. It was a good relationship for both of them: Tilly had a chick (!) and Eva had a friend and protector of her own kind.

I guessed CC was being sarcastic when she said Eric was excited... :P

Oooo. I want to try and do a portrait of LSE too. Lets see...

    ERIC's PORTRAIT

    :artgallery: At home

    :read: On vacation

:sleep1: During CC's early morning rambles on Hencam

:tearhair: During the daytime as CC rambles on Hencam

:rant_red2: When CC casually mentions the new eggs hatching in the garden

:help: What he's actually feeling inside as CC casually mentions the new eggs hatching in the garden

:whorship: Because he's no fool and wouldn't actually want CC to stop making a home for her beloved animals

    Because Eric LOVES CC

Perhaps the vanillacons should be re-named as LSEcons instead!
