This is a daily ritual for Martin & Maya. Decided to capture it on film.

So, its after dinner. The day is winding down. Its starting to get dark. Suddenly, Holly goes ballistic - barking the way she does when a person (or roaming dog) comes up the steps. Only she is alerting to the backyard this time. So - that's a worry. I peek out the window and see something that sends me racing for the camera. I've only seen one of these 3 times in the whole 10 years I've lived on Whidbey:

Oh yes. Thrilled pretty much describes it. I couldn't believe it that she was still there when I got back with my camera. And that, while dark outside, there was just enough light to get some shots. And she stayed for quite awhile too. I even got up pretty close. I could have gotten closer probably but I started to get scared. Those birds are big!

Just in case you are wondering, I saw Ethel out on the front lawn this morning - so, no problems in that regard.

Aren't her feathers pretty? Its a bit unnerving when they turn their heads and stare you deeply in the eye though. She did that to me a couple of times. Clearly calculating the hassle of dealing with such a large animal over the potential that I might taste good. Obviously, she didn't think I was worth the effort in the end. :)

    Keeper of the hens

I like owls. A barn owl pooped on my older cousin's arm (a lovely creamy runny poo, Diane ;) ) and oh how i laughed!

She's a beauty. Any idea what sort of owl she is?

WOW!!! He is superb!! I absolutely adore birds of prey (as you know Diane!) and I don't know if owls fall into that category but they are a favourite too. Excellent - have never seen one in my back yard!

She's a Barred Owl, 21 inches high. (So not far off two feet tall!) I looked in the bird book and it said: "Distinctive call is a rhythmic series of loud hoots; who-cooks-for-you, who cooks for you all..." I'm guessing that's with a Merkin accent as the book is "National Geographic's Field Guide to Birds of North America." They like to live in forests. So maybe she lives in the woods behind me.

And, yep, Kate - they are a meat eating bird. That's why I want Ethel to be careful.

Veeerrrrry pretty! I've never seen a *big* owl up close (apart from at shows) the only owls i've seen in the wild have been quite far away, so i didn't realise quite how big they were :)

There was an escaped Eagle owl on my brother's neighbour's chimney. And an RSPCA man scratching his head wondering how to get it down!

Have I ever told you about when I worked at the local hospital? I was walking up to my office one sunny morning (yes, we used to get them!) by what we called the back wards (because they were 'over the back'!) I saw a workman craning his neck to look at the fire escape on one of them. As I got closer I realised it was because there was a bloomin big hawk sitting on it! It was at head height, and I was about 3 foot away from it. I didn't know what to do so I just stood and looked at it for a good 5 minutes, waiting for someone else to come along and admire it but no one did, so I headed off to my office and wondered about it all day. Never did find out where it came from / went to / if anyone else saw it!
