We noticed our girls' coup was teeming with mites crawling around. We've dismantled it (it's wooden) and jet washed it. Sprayed it with bleach kitchen cleaner and thousands more ran out from the slatted woodwork. Horrid!

We've noticed they've been nibbling our girls' combs to suck their blood! They've been dusted with mite powder and are in temporary cardboard accommodation (under cover, in a cage too)

Once we've got rid of them (presumably only 99% of them) what can we do to keep them at bay?

    Thanks

    Ferg & Andrea

Look at the theread on Red Mites...it'll make you itch, but I think you'll find it useful...sounds as though you've got Red Mites, but Red (harhar) will know more than me.

    Keeper of the hens

goosegog, was just gonna direct you to the Red Mite thread but see you've already found it...just keep their bedding littered with the DE and the mites shouldn't cause any problems...they're nasty little boogers, good luck!

Yeah we used to have real problems with them when Milly was little and the chucks free-ranged...you could literally see them crawling in her feathers and i'd feel so guilty. Plus i'd get them on me too when i held her, which was not nice :ack2:
