I am thinking of applying to a University in England but I am just completely overwhelmed with application culture shock at the movement!! The British education and application system is completely different from the American and Canadian one I am using and I hope that the lovely Brits at hencam will be able to assist me in my current state of consternation! Ok so I am using an online application called UCAS and they ask some strange questions jumbled together with difficult British lingo:( What exactly is a "Formal Qualifications"? Is it a high school or secondary graduate diploma? And what is a "Personal Statement "? Is it like a college essay that you write to impress the Universities or is it a bunch of statements that explain why you failed a grade or prove that you missed a month of school due to sickness and such?

That's exciting Nancy! Where are you thinking of applying?

Red will probably be able to give you some great tips once the dust has settled from her own Great Adventure. :D

Red will know best as she'd have done it recently, but I'd say that 'formal qualifications' is your exam results - things you've been tested on.

Personal statement will be a "this is why you should give me a place". Life experience should be included in it - from an employment point of view the brits love people who do voluntary work or something out of the ordinary. If you're applying to a particular uni find out what they excel in and play that part up. If its a general application be careful NOT to do that!

    Formal qualifications are your degrees/exams.
as Kate says, a personal statement is 'I'm wonderful; you NEEEED me. ' I put hobbies and things in that bit. Red will help!

For the personal statement should it be like a resume. Should I just basically list and discribe what I do? Like: volunteered over summer thus I have good commications skills, blah blah blah? Or like a creative essay about a personal experience: I went to the mall, saw a homeless person so I decided to help and blah blah blah? Ace I hate personal statements too! I have to write 5 for the American university I want to get into.

I want to do IT at Uni. So my personal statement would say that i am a manager of a bands website. :)
All you need to do is write all the great stuff you do. Like voluntary stuff and if you have had a job before. ;)

I see... Thank you Ace. Oh and by the way is a "recording" a song? (I know this probably sounds ridiculous that I am asking these questions but I am really confused with this British lingo:|)

Your high school has transcripts, right? They will probably want a sealed copy of those.

LOL - *recording* isn't British (alone at least.) Its from *record* as in the thing that preceded CDs.

It just occurred to me that, given the sometimes unfortunate, differences in lingo - you might want to whisper your personal statement to one of our esteemed British Hencammers. Faux pas avoidance, you know...

Don’t worry Ace, our tendencies to embarrass ourselves is really just a subconscious way to express the creativity juices that are incessantly flowing through our personalities.:woohoo::nodyes:

Hey, I didn't mean to imply you SHOULD whisper or that you've said anything embarrassing. I just said that because, if you write out your whole personal statement it might be...personal. But, it might also need to be translated to Brit. :P

    Keeper of the hens

Formal qualifications are your exam results, your school years are all messed up compared to ours :)

And your personal statement should cover what you are like as a person, what you can offer and also what you'll gain from the University. You should also list hobbies and previous experience and any related interests you can list for the course you want to do.

What are you wanting to do and where?

Scarlet's still getting over her cold/flu so I don't know if she's been visiting here that often (and poor Milly looks forlorn she hasn't seen Scarlet for nearly a week now!)

    Keeper of the hens

Yeah sorry everyone, i got 'flu :(

Nancy, I can help with the personal statement - i remember how horrible that is! In fact, wait a minute, i think i still have a sheet to help i got from school a few years ago when i first started writing it...

Nope, i've just cleared it out, typical :-\ I did find my personal statement though, so i can pass on how we were told to structure it...

First off we were 'advised' to say what you wanted to study, why you'd be good at it & why you feel that subject is important (to yourself or to society, whatever). Kind of an introduction to the whole thing.

Second paragraph (we were told every paragraph should be split into a seperate topic) - the subjects you are studying now and things you have gained from them (for eg. studying English Lit helped me develop my skills in problem solving & analysis...:blahblahblah: :blahblahblah: )

Para 3 was things that are unique about you, such as any personal or strong beliefs...animal welfare or whatever. You could include hobbies or other activites you enjoy, too.

4th Para i wrote about voluntary work i took part in and what i gained from this - sense of responsibility, independance etc. Also mention any jobs or other things like that here.

And then have a little conclusion to wrap it up and say what a brilliant student you are :P

Hope this helps, and that it actually makes sense...Don't feel forced to use any of this if you don't want / need to, it's just out there if you want it. Good luck ;)
