Livia's been sitting on eggs for aaaaaaaaaaaages; how do I know when there's no hope of hatching, and do I let her come to that conclusion in her own time or do I hoick her off the eggs and chuck 'em?

    Keeper of the hens

How many days has she been sitting on the eggs?

Is Livia getting off the eggs throughout the day to eat, drink & poop? (if she has stopped getting off the nest it could be that she has heard / felt something moving inside the eggs, and so is waiting for a hatch)

When you go close to her nest can you smell anything? (eg. rotten eggs?)

You could try candling the eggs - this involves taking the eggs to a darkened room and shining a bright torch onto them. If the eggs are solid and you see movement, put the eggs back under Livia. Candling is tricky and you might not even be able to see anything, but it might be worth a try...?

If Livia has been sitting on the eggs for over 25 days i'd say candle them. If nothing comes up whilst candling you could either leave them for a few extra days to be sure or chuck 'em...you don't want rotten eggs exploding underneath Livia :fierce:

If any eggs smell or are leaking, throw them immediately as they are preparing to explode!

Friend of mine had a goose in this situation. She wouldn't let anyone near the eggs - you know how vicious geese can be....
Eventually she left them. Some had exploded, others had transparent shells.

Definitely no chicks? There aren't any hiding underneath her? Is she getting off the nest?

Maybe go prod her off the nest, have a quick glance about...check for ooziness, cracked shells, dead chicks, smashed eggs etc. If the eggs seem fine and Livia is still insisting on brooding, just let her back on until either you get chicks or the eggs start to smell... :)

As long as she is brooding, Livia will be content. She'd probably be happier with chicks, but you are letting her do what she wants to do, and she'll be delighted with that!

It's okay. Livia will do whatever she thinks is best...even if the eggs blow underneath her it's not so bad, she just might be a bit smelly for a while :P

You're not doing anything to make her unhappy, you're allowing her to sit, she's healthy and happy.

Well, I lifted her out (OUTRAGE!!!!) and the eggs are there - still warm, not whiffy (as far as I can ascertain), not cracked or leaky or exploded. So I popped her back in. She later came out for a drink and a dustbath and then back in. So...no change, really! I'll let you know as soon as any chicken nuggets appear...:)

CC, chickens take 21 days to hatch, so if you don't have any by now, I don't think there will be any this time. How many eggs are there in the nest? I'd go out with a strong flashlight and check the eggs by holding the light at the small end of them, and check for movement. She could have laid one of them after she started sitting and you could possibly still have one chick in there.

You could turf her off and take the eggs away, see if that changes anything. I doubt it will, but at least then she is safe from exploding eggs :D

I read the only way to supposedly crack a broody hen is to put her in a drafty cage and stick a load of ice cubes underneath her...I'd rather just leave them to wait it out!

My Auntie Beak has decided to go broody. She was in the laying compartment when I went to close them up for the night and gave me a warning growl. I thought oh no here we go.
When I went down this morning she refused to get out so I left her for a couple of hours and she still hadn't appeared. I went to check again and she hadn't moved but had two hens squeezed in with her trying to lay.
Later on I went down to see what she was up to and she let me take the eggs from under her. She was real hot so I managed to turf her out much to her disgust. She has a drink and ate a little. She looked so comical all fluffed up scratching about but she was in a nasty mood and had a go at the others. I opened all the bedroom up and opened the laying hatch much to her further annoyance but she still settled down. I slid a freezer block under her to cool her down. She was still on it an hour ago so I have slid another under her. I have another for bed time so hopefully it will cool her down so she gives up. We shall see. I will let you know it is going tomorrow.

Well Auntie Beak is back to her normal self again. It just took four days to sort her out. I would have loved to put some eggs under her, the thing is I have enough hens at the moment for the amount of land I have.
She is also my lead hen and the others were at a total loss with out her so I did not want her broody for three weeks or more and then having her at the bottom of the pecking order, they never eat and drink enough when they are broody so her health would have suffered a bit as well for no reason. It was the kindest thing to do for her and quite the norm.
